The Leaven of the Pharisees

In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known.

Адже немає нічого прихованого, що не відкрилося б, ані таємного, яке не стало б явним.

3

Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops.

Тому все, що сказали ви в темряві, — при світлі почується; що на вухо прошепотіли ви в кімнатах, — буде проголошено з дахів.

Fearing God Alone

And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.

Кажу вам, друзям Моїм: не бійтеся тих, хто вбиває тіло, а після цього не можуть більше нічого зробити.

But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.

Скажу вам, кого боятися: бійтеся того, хто має владу, вбивши, ще й у геєну вкинути. Так, кажу вам: того бійтеся!

Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?

Чи не п’ять горобців продають за два асарії [1]? І жодний з них не забутий перед Богом.

But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.

Адже навіть волосся на вашій голові все полічене. Не бійтеся: ви кращі за багатьох горобців.

Confessing Christ

Also I say unto you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God:

Кажу вам: кожного, хто визнає Мене перед людьми, Син Людський визнає перед Божими ангелами,

But he that denieth me before men shall be denied before the angels of God.

9

а хто відрікся від Мене перед людьми, від того Він відречеться перед Божими ангелами.

10

And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven.

Кожному, хто скаже слово проти Людського Сина, проститься, а тому, хто зневажить Святого Духа, не проститься.

11

And when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates, and powers, take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say:

Коли приведуть вас до синагог, до правителів, до влади, — не журіться, що або як треба відповідати, чи що сказати,

12

For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say.

бо Святий Дух саме в ту мить навчить вас, що треба сказати.

The Parable of the Rich Fool

And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me.

13

Озвався до Нього хтось із натовпу: Учителю, скажи моєму братові, щоб він поділився зі мною спадщиною!

14

And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you?

14

Та Він відповів йому: Чоловіче, хто Мене поставив суддею або розподілювачем над вами?

15

And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.

15

І промовив ще до них: Глядіть і стережіться всякої зажерливості, бо не від надміру багатства залежить життя людини!

16

And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:

16

І Він розповів їм притчу, кажучи: В одного багатого чоловіка рясно вродила нива.

17

And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?

17

Тож думав він, говорячи сам до себе: Що робити, коли не маю куди зібрати врожаю?

18

And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.

18

І сказав: Зроблю так: розвалю свої клуні, збудую більші, зберу туди все [моє] збіжжя та моє добро

19

And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.

19

і скажу своїй душі: Душе, маєш вдосталь добра, зібраного на багато років: спочивай, їж, пий, веселися…

20

But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?

20

А Бог до нього промовив: Нерозумний, цієї ночі душу твою зажадають від тебе! А те, що ти приготував, кому воно буде?

21

So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

21

Так буває з тим, хто збирає для себе, але не багатіє для Бога.

22

Do Not Worry

And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on.

22

Своїм же учням Він додав: Тому кажу вам: не журіться про душу, що будете їсти, ні про тіло, у що одягнетеся.

23

The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment.

23

Бо душа є більша від їжі, а тіло — від одягу.

24

Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls?

24

Дивіться на ворон, які не сіють, не жнуть, не мають ні комори, ні клуні, а Бог годує їх. Наскільки ж більше за птахів ви варті!

25

And which of you with taking thought can add to his stature one cubit?

25

Хто з вас, журячись, зможе додати до свого росту хоч [один] лікоть [2]?

26

If ye then be not able to do that thing which is least, why take ye thought for the rest?

26

Якщо ви навіть такого найменшого не можете, то чому про інше журитеся?

27

Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

27

Дивіться на лілії, як вони ростуть: не прядуть і не тчуть. Але скажу вам, що й Соломон у всій своїй славі не вдягався так, як одна з них.

28

If then God so clothe the grass, which is to day in the field, and to morrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith?

І якщо траву, яка нині на полі, а завтра вкидають до печі, Бог отак одягає, то наскільки більше одягне вас, маловіри?

29

And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind.

29

І не шукайте, що будете їсти й пити, і не журіться.

30

For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things.

30

Цього всього прагнуть народи світу; ваш же Отець знає, що цього і ви потребуєте.

31

But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you.

31

Але шукайте Царства Його, а це все вам додасться.

32

Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

32

Не бійся, мале стадо, бо вподобав ваш Отець дати вам Царство.

33

Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth.

33

Продайте ваші маєтки, роздайте милостиню, зробіть собі гаманці, які не старіють, — невичерпний скарб на небесах, де злодій не підкрадається, де міль не точить,

34

For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

34

адже де є скарб ваш, там буде й ваше серце.

35

Be Ready for Service

Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning;

35

Хай будуть підперезані ваші стегна і хай горять ваші світильники.

36

And ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him immediately.

36

Тож будьте подібні до людей, які очікують свого пана, коли той повернеться з весілля; як прийде він і постукає, то відразу ж відчинять йому.

37

Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them.

Блаженні ті раби, пан яких, прийшовши, застане їх на сторожі; запевняю вас, що підпережеться, посадить їх і, підійшовши, буде служити їм.

38

And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants.

38

І якщо прийде і в другу, і в третю сторожу [3] , і знайде їх так само, то блаженні вони.

39

And this know, that if the goodman of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched, and not have suffered his house to be broken through.

39

Знайте, що якби господар знав, о котрій годині підкрадеться злодій, то [пильнував би і] не дав би вдертися до своєї хати.

40

Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not.

40

Тож і ви будьте готові, бо саме тієї години, у котру не сподіваєтеся, прийде Син Людський!

41

Then Peter said unto him, Lord, speakest thou this parable unto us, or even to all?

41

Озвався Петро: Господи, чи цю притчу розповідаєш лише нам, чи всім?

42

And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season?

42

А Господь сказав: Хто є вірним, мудрим управителем, якого пан поставив над своєю челяддю, щоби давав своєчасно мірку пшениці?

43

Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.

43

Блаженний той раб, якого пан, коли прийде, знайде, що чинить так.

44

Of a truth I say unto you, that he will make him ruler over all that he hath.

44

Правду кажу вам, що такого над усім своїм володінням він поставить.

45

But and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken;

45

Якщо ж скаже раб той собі в серці: Затримується мій пан прийти! — і почне бити слуг та служниць, їсти, пити й упиватися,

46

The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.

то прийде пан того раба в день, в який не сподівається, і в годину, котрої не знає, і розітне його навпіл, і визначить йому долю разом з невірними.

47

And that servant, which knew his lord's will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.

47

Той же раб, який знав волю свого пана, але не приготувався і не вчинив згідно з його волею, буде тяжко битий;

48

But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.

той же, який не знав, але зробив щось гідне покарання, буде мало битий. У кожного, кому дано багато, від того будуть і багато вимагати; і кому багато довірено, від того і вимагатимуть більше.

Not Peace, But Division

I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled?

49

Я прийшов вогонь кинути на землю; і як же Я прагну, щоб він уже розгорівся!

50

But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished!

50

Я маю хреститися хрещенням; і як важко Мені, поки звершиться!

51

Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division:

51

Чи думаєте, що Я прийшов мир принести на землю? Ні, кажу вам, — поділ!

52

For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three.

52

Бо відтепер будуть п’ятеро в одному домі поділені: троє проти двох і двоє проти трьох.

53

The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.

53

Розділиться батько із сином і син з батьком; мати — з дочкою, а дочка — з матір’ю; свекруха — зі своєю невісткою, а невістка — зі [своєю] свекрухою.

Interpreting the Present Time

And he said also to the people, When ye see a cloud rise out of the west, straightway ye say, There cometh a shower; and so it is.

Говорив Він і до натовпу: Коли ви побачите хмару, яка надходить із заходу, одразу кажете, що насувається дощ, — і стається так.

55

And when ye see the south wind blow, ye say, There will be heat; and it cometh to pass.

А коли вітер південний віє, кажете, що буде спека, — і збувається.

56

Ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky and of the earth; but how is it that ye do not discern this time?

Лицеміри, вигляд землі й неба ви вмієте розпізнавати, чому ж ви не вмієте розпізнати часу цього?

57

Reconciling with Your Adversary

Yea, and why even of yourselves judge ye not what is right?

Чому самі від себе не судите, що є справедливе?

58

When thou goest with thine adversary to the magistrate, as thou art in the way, give diligence that thou mayest be delivered from him; lest he hale thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and the officer cast thee into prison.

58

Коли ти йдеш зі своїм обвинувачем до правителя, то доклади в дорозі зусиль звільнитися від нього, щоби часом він не притягнув тебе до судді, а суддя не видав тебе судовому виконавцеві, а виконавець не вкинув тебе до в’язниці.

59

I tell thee, thou shalt not depart thence, till thou hast paid the very last mite.

Кажу тобі, що не вийдеш звідти, доки не віддаси останньої лепти [4].
