The Mission of John the Baptist

Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene,

В пятнадцатый год правления кесаря Тиберия, когда Иудеей управлял Понтий Пилат, Ирод был правителем Галилеи, его брат Филипп — правителем Итуреи и Трахонитской области,27 Лисаний — правителем Авилинеи,

Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.

а первосвященниками были Анна и Кайафа,28 слово Бога было к Иоанну, сыну Захарии, в пустыне.

And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;

После этого Иоанн пошел по всем областям, прилегающим к Иордану, и проповедовал крещение в знак покаяния для прощения грехов.

As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

«Голос раздается в пустыне:
„Приготовьте путь Господу,
сделайте прямыми дороги Его!

Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;

Всякий овраг пусть будет засыпан,
а всякая гора и холм — опустятся;
извилистые пути пусть станут прямыми,
и неровные — пусть станут ровными,

And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.

чтобы все человечество увидело Божье спасение“».29

Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

Иоанн говорил толпам, которые приходили принять крещение от него:
— Вы, змеиное отродье! Кто предупредил вас, чтобы вы бежали от грядущего гнева?

8

Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

Делами докажите искренность вашего покаяния. Не думайте говорить в себе: «Наш отец Авраам!» Говорю вам, что Бог может и из этих камней сотворить детей Аврааму.

And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

Уже и топор лежит у корня деревьев, и всякое дерево, не приносящее хорошего плода, будет срублено и брошено в огонь.

And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then?

10

— Что же нам делать? — спрашивал народ.

He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.

Иоанн отвечал:
— Тот, у кого две рубахи, пусть даст одну тому, у кого нет вообще, и тот, у кого есть еда, пусть сделает то же самое.

12

Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do?

Сборщики налогов тоже приходили принять крещение.
— Учитель, — спрашивали они, — что нам делать?

13

And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you.

13

— Не требуйте с людей больше, чем положено, — говорил он им.

14

And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.

Спрашивали его и солдаты:
— А что делать нам?
Иоанн ответил:
— Не вымогайте у людей денег силой и угрозами, никого ложно не обвиняйте и довольствуйтесь своим жалованьем.

15

And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not;

Народ был в напряженном ожидании, и всех интересовало, не Иоанн ли Христос.

16

John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:

На это Иоанн отвечал им всем:
— Я крещу вас водой, но придет Тот, Кто могущественнее меня, я даже не достоин развязать ремни Его сандалий. Он будет крестить вас Святым Духом и огнем.

17

Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.

У Него в руках лопата, чтобы провеять зерно на току; пшеницу Он соберет в Свое хранилище, а мякину сожжет в неугасимом огне.

And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people.

18

И много другого говорил Иоанн, убеждая народ и возвещая ему Радостную Весть.

19

But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done,

19

Когда же он стал упрекать правителя Ирода за женитьбу на Иродиаде, жене его брата, и за все другое зло, которое тот совершил,

20

Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison.

20

Ирод ко всему злу добавил еще одно, заключив Иоанна в темницу.

The Baptism of Jesus

Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,

Когда весь народ крестился, был крещен и Иисус, и когда после крещения Он молился, раскрылись небеса,

And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.

и на Него спустился Святой Дух в телесном виде, в образе голубя. И с небес прозвучал голос:
— Ты Мой любимый Сын! В Тебе Моя радость!

The Genealogy of Jesus

And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli,
