Wives and Husbands

Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives;

1

Так само дружи́ни, — корі́ться своїм чоловікам, щоб і деякі, хто не ко́риться слову, були приєднані без слова пово́дженням дружи́н,

2

While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear.

2

як побачать ваше пово́дження чисте в страху́.

Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;

А окрасою їм нехай буде не зовнішнє, — запліта́ння волосся та наві́шання золота або вбира́ння одеж,

But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.

але захо́вана люди́на серця в нетлінні ла́гідного й мовчазно́го духа, що дорогоцінне перед Богом.

For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands:

Бо так само колись прикраша́ли себе й святі ті жінки́, що клали надію на Бога й кори́лись своїм чоловікам.

Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement.

Так Сара корилась Авраамові, і паном його називала. А ви — її діти, коли добро робите та не лякаєтесь жа́дного стра́ху.

Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.

Чоловіки, — так само живіть ра́зом із дружи́нами за розумом, як зо слабішою жіночою посудиною, і виявляйте їм честь, бо й вони є співспадкоє́миці благода́ті життя, щоб не спинялися ваші моли́тви.

Turn from Evil

Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous:

Наре́шті ж, будьте всі одноду́мні, спочутливі, братолюбні, милосердні, покірливі.

9

Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing.

Не платіть злом за зло, або лайкою за лайку, навпаки, — благословляйте, знавши, що на це вас покликано, щоб ви вспадкува́ли благослове́ння.

10

For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile:

10

„Бо хто хоче любити життя та бачити добрі дні, нехай здержить свого язика́ від лихого та у́ста свої від гово́рення пі́дступу.

11

Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it.

11

Ухиляйся від злого та добре чини, шукай миру й женися за ним!

12

For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.

Бо очі Господні — до праведних, а ву́ха Його — до їхніх прохань, а Господнє лице проти тих, хто чинить лихе!“

13

And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good?

13

І хто заподі́є вам зле, коли будете ви оборонцями доброго?

14

Suffering for Righteousness

But and if ye suffer for righteousness' sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled;

14

А коли ви за праведність і страждаєте, то ви блаженні! „А їхнього стра́ху не бійтеся, і не тривожтеся!“

15

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

15

А Господа Христа освятіть у ваших серцях, і за́вжди готовими будьте на відповідь кожному, хто в вас запитає рахунку про надію, що в вас, із ла́гідністю та зо стра́хом.

16

Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.

Майте добре сумління, щоб тим, за що́ вас обмовляють, немов би злочинців, були посоромлені лихосло́вники вашого пово́дження в Христі.

17

For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing.

17

Бо ліпше страждати за добрі діла, — коли хоче того Божа воля, — аніж за лихі.

18

For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

Бо й Христос один раз постраждав був за наші гріхи, щоб приве́сти нас до Бога, Праведний за неправедних, хоч уме́ртвлений тілом, але Духом ожи́влений,

19

By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;

19

Яким Він і ду́хам, що в в'язниці були, зійшовши, звіщав;

20

Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.

20

вони колись непокі́рливі були́, як їх Боже довготерпіння чекало за Но́євих днів, коли будувався ковче́г, що в ньому мало, цебто вісім душ, спаслось від води.

21

The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:

Того образ, хрищення — не тілесної нечистости позбуття́, але обі́тниця Богові доброго сумління, — спасає тепер і нас воскресінням Ісуса Христа,

22

Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.

22

що, зійшовши на небо, пробуває по Божій правиці, а Йому підкорилися анголи, влади та сили.
