When the LORD thy God hath cut off the nations, whose land the LORD thy God giveth thee, and thou succeedest them, and dwellest in their cities, and in their houses;

Der HERR wird die Völker in dem Land, das er euch gibt, vernichten. Ihr werdet ihr Land in Besitz nehmen und in ihren Städten und Häusern leben. Drei von diesen Städten sollt ihr zu Zufluchtsorten erklären.
Thou shalt prepare thee a way, and divide the coasts of thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee to inherit, into three parts, that every slayer may flee thither.
Sie sollen in drei verschiedenen Teilen des Landes liegen und gut erreichbar sein. Dorthin kann jeder fliehen, der einen anderen Menschen unabsichtlich getötet hat.
And this is the case of the slayer, which shall flee thither, that he may live: Whoso killeth his neighbour ignorantly, whom he hated not in time past;
Er ist in diesen Städten vor der Blutrache sicher, wenn er nicht vorsätzlich und aus Hass gehandelt hat.
As when a man goeth into the wood with his neighbour to hew wood, and his hand fetcheth a stroke with the axe to cut down the tree, and the head slippeth from the helve, and lighteth upon his neighbour, that he die; he shall flee unto one of those cities, and live:
So etwas kann geschehen, wenn zwei Männer im Wald Bäume fällen. Der eine holt mit der Axt aus, das Eisen löst sich und trifft den anderen tödlich. In diesem Fall kann der Totschläger sein eigenes Leben durch Flucht in eine der Zufluchtsstädte retten.
Lest the avenger of the blood pursue the slayer, while his heart is hot, and overtake him, because the way is long, and slay him; whereas he was not worthy of death, inasmuch as he hated him not in time past.
Der Weg dorthin darf nicht zu lang sein. Denn der nächste Verwandte des Getöteten wird den Totschläger voller Zorn verfolgen, um den Tod zu rächen. Holt er ihn ein, dann bringt er ihn um. Dabei war der Verfolgte unschuldig, denn er hat nicht aus Hass getötet.
Wherefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt separate three cities for thee.
Darum sollt ihr drei gut erreichbare Zufluchtsorte bestimmen.
And if the LORD thy God enlarge thy coast, as he hath sworn unto thy fathers, and give thee all the land which he promised to give unto thy fathers;
Später wird der HERR, euer Gott, euer Gebiet erweitern. Das hat er euren Vorfahren geschworen. Ihr werdet dann das ganze Land besitzen, das er ihnen versprochen hat.
If thou shalt keep all these commandments to do them, which I command thee this day, to love the LORD thy God, and to walk ever in his ways; then shalt thou add three cities more for thee, beside these three:
Er schenkt es euch, wenn ihr alle seine Gebote genau beachtet, die ich euch heute weitergebe. Liebt den HERRN, euren Gott, und lebt jeden Tag so, wie es ihm gefällt. In dem neu dazugewonnenen Gebiet sollt ihr drei weitere Zufluchtsstädte bestimmen.
That innocent blood be not shed in thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, and so blood be upon thee.
Denn in dem Land, das der HERR, euer Gott, euch schenken will, soll kein unschuldiges Blut vergossen werden. Sonst trägt euer ganzes Volk dafür die Verantwortung.
But if any man hate his neighbour, and lie in wait for him, and rise up against him, and smite him mortally that he die, and fleeth into one of these cities:
Es kann aber auch sein, dass jemand aus Hass einem anderen auflauert, ihn ermordet und anschließend in einer der Zufluchtsstädte Schutz sucht.
Then the elders of his city shall send and fetch him thence, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die.
Dann sollen die führenden Männer seiner Heimatstadt ihn holen lassen und an den Bluträcher ausliefern, damit dieser ihn tötet.
Thine eye shall not pity him, but thou shalt put away the guilt of innocent blood from Israel, that it may go well with thee.
Habt kein Mitleid mit einem Mörder! Das Blut, das er in eurem Land vergossen hat, darf nicht ungesühnt bleiben! Wenn ihr euch daran haltet, wird es euch gut gehen.
Thou shalt not remove thy neighbour's landmark, which they of old time have set in thine inheritance, which thou shalt inherit in the land that the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it.
Wenn ihr das Land besitzt, das der HERR, euer Gott, euch geben will, dann stehlt euren Nachbarn keinen Grund und Boden. Lasst die Grundstücksgrenzen so, wie eure Vorfahren sie gezogen haben!
The Testimony of Witnesses
One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established.

Ihr dürft niemanden verurteilen, wenn nur ein einziger Zeuge gegen ihn aussagt. Um welches Unrecht oder Verbrechen es auch geht, immer sind mindestens zwei oder drei Zeugen nötig, um eine Sache zu entscheiden.
If a false witness rise up against any man to testify against him that which is wrong;
Wenn der Angeklagte seine Schuld bestreitet und einen Zeugen der Lüge bezichtigt,
Then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before the LORD, before the priests and the judges, which shall be in those days;
dann sollen beide ins Heiligtum vor den HERRN kommen und dort ihren Fall den Priestern und Richtern vorlegen.
And the judges shall make diligent inquisition: and, behold, if the witness be a false witness, and hath testified falsely against his brother;
Die Richter sollen die Angelegenheit genau untersuchen. Stellt sich heraus, dass der Zeuge tatsächlich gelogen und den anderen zu Unrecht beschuldigt hat,
Then shall ye do unto him, as he had thought to have done unto his brother: so shalt thou put the evil away from among you.
dann sollt ihr genau die Strafe über ihn verhängen, die er dem anderen zugedacht hat. Duldet keine solche Hinterhältigkeit, sondern beseitigt das Böse aus eurem Volk!
And those which remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth commit no more any such evil among you.
Ganz Israel soll von der Bestrafung erfahren, damit alle gewarnt sind und so eine Verleumdung nicht wieder bei euch vorkommt.
