The Covenant in Moab
These are the words of the covenant, which the LORD commanded Moses to make with the children of Israel in the land of Moab, beside the covenant which he made with them in Horeb.

Mose rief alle Israeliten zusammen und sagte zu ihnen: »Ihr habt mit eigenen Augen gesehen, was der HERR in Ägypten mit dem Pharao, seinen Hofbeamten und seinem ganzen Land gemacht hat.
And Moses called unto all Israel, and said unto them, Ye have seen all that the LORD did before your eyes in the land of Egypt unto Pharaoh, and unto all his servants, and unto all his land;
Ihr seid Zeugen der großen und unfassbaren Wunder, mit denen der Herr dort seine Macht gezeigt hat.
The great temptations which thine eyes have seen, the signs, and those great miracles:
Und doch hat er euch bis heute noch nicht wirklich erkennen lassen, wer er ist und was er für euch getan hat. Ihr habt zwar Augen, aber ihr seht es nicht. Ihr habt Ohren, aber ihr versteht es nicht.
Yet the LORD hath not given you an heart to perceive, and eyes to see, and ears to hear, unto this day.
Vierzig Jahre habe ich euch durch die Wüste geführt, und eure Kleider und Schuhe sind immer noch nicht verschlissen.
And I have led you forty years in the wilderness: your clothes are not waxen old upon you, and thy shoe is not waxen old upon thy foot.
Zwar gab es kein Brot und keinen Wein oder sonst ein berauschendes Getränk, aber der HERR hat euch mit allem versorgt, was ihr brauchtet. Daran solltet ihr erkennen, dass er euer Gott ist.
Ye have not eaten bread, neither have ye drunk wine or strong drink: that ye might know that I am the LORD your God.

And when ye came unto this place, Sihon the king of Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, came out against us unto battle, and we smote them:

And we took their land, and gave it for an inheritance unto the Reubenites, and to the Gadites, and to the half tribe of Manasseh.
Darum haltet euch an alle Gebote dieses Bundes, dann wird euch alles gelingen, was ihr tut.
Keep therefore the words of this covenant, and do them, that ye may prosper in all that ye do.
Ihr steht heute alle vor dem HERRN, eurem Gott. Die Oberhäupter eurer Stämme und Sippen sind da, eure Beamten und alle anderen israelitischen Männer,
Ye stand this day all of you before the LORD your God; your captains of your tribes, your elders, and your officers, with all the men of Israel,
eure Frauen und Kinder, dazu die Ausländer, die in eurem Lager wohnen, bis hin zu den Holzfällern und Wasserträgern.
Your little ones, your wives, and thy stranger that is in thy camp, from the hewer of thy wood unto the drawer of thy water:
Ihr habt euch hier versammelt, um den Bund mit dem HERRN zu erneuern. Er schließt ihn mit euch und besiegelt ihn mit einem Schwur.
That thou shouldest enter into covenant with the LORD thy God, and into his oath, which the LORD thy God maketh with thee this day:
Damit bestätigt er heute, dass ihr zu ihm gehört. Ihr seid sein Volk, und er ist euer Gott, wie er es euch und euren Vorfahren Abraham, Isaak und Jakob versprochen hat.
That he may establish thee to day for a people unto himself, and that he may be unto thee a God, as he hath said unto thee, and as he hath sworn unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.
Er schließt diesen Bund nicht nur mit euch,
Neither with you only do I make this covenant and this oath;
sondern auch mit euren Nachkommen, die noch nicht geboren sind. Sie gehören genauso zu ihm wie wir, die wir heute vor ihm stehen.«
But with him that standeth here with us this day before the LORD our God, and also with him that is not here with us this day:
»Ihr wisst, wie wir in Ägypten gelebt haben, und erinnert euch auch an die Völker, denen wir auf dem Weg hierher begegnet sind.
(For ye know how we have dwelt in the land of Egypt; and how we came through the nations which ye passed by;
Ihr habt die abscheulichen Götzen gesehen, die diese Menschen verehren, ihre Statuen aus Holz, Stein, Silber und Gold.
And ye have seen their abominations, and their idols, wood and stone, silver and gold, which were among them:)
Aber aus eurem Volk soll sich von heute an niemand mehr vom HERRN, unserem Gott, abwenden und den Göttern dieser Völker nachlaufen — kein Mann, keine Frau, keine Sippe und kein Stamm. Wer so etwas tut, ist wie eine giftige Pflanze unter euch, die bittere Früchte trägt.
Lest there should be among you man, or woman, or family, or tribe, whose heart turneth away this day from the LORD our God, to go and serve the gods of these nations; lest there should be among you a root that beareth gall and wormwood;
Vielleicht hört mancher von euch heute von den Strafen, die der Herr androht, und redet sich ein: ›Es wird mir weiterhin gut gehen, auch wenn ich nicht bereit bin, die Gebote des Herrn zu befolgen.‹ Doch er irrt sich! Er wird sterben und das ganze Volk mit sich ins Verderben reißen.
And it come to pass, when he heareth the words of this curse, that he bless himself in his heart, saying, I shall have peace, though I walk in the imagination of mine heart, to add drunkenness to thirst:
Der HERR ist nicht bereit, diesem Menschen zu vergeben; seinen ganzen Zorn wird er an ihm auslassen. Alle Fluchworte, die in diesem Buch stehen, werden ihn treffen. Der HERR wird jede Spur von ihm auslöschen.
The LORD will not spare him, but then the anger of the LORD and his jealousy shall smoke against that man, and all the curses that are written in this book shall lie upon him, and the LORD shall blot out his name from under heaven.
Er wird ihn aus der Gemeinschaft der Israeliten verstoßen und ins Unglück stürzen. Alle Flüche des Bundes, die in diesem Gesetzbuch stehen, werden diesen Menschen treffen.
And the LORD shall separate him unto evil out of all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant that are written in this book of the law:
Vielleicht werden eines Tages eure Nachkommen und Menschen aus fremden Völkern sehen, wie euer Land völlig verwüstet und von Seuchen heimgesucht worden ist.
So that the generation to come of your children that shall rise up after you, and the stranger that shall come from a far land, shall say, when they see the plagues of that land, and the sicknesses which the LORD hath laid upon it;
Der Boden wird dann ganz verbrannt sein, bedeckt mit Schwefel und Salz. Man wird nichts mehr dort aussäen können, weil nichts mehr wächst, nicht einmal Unkraut. Es sieht aus wie nach dem Untergang der Städte Sodom und Gomorra, Adma und Zebojim, die der HERR voller Zorn in Schutt und Asche gelegt hat.
And that the whole land thereof is brimstone, and salt, and burning, that it is not sown, nor beareth, nor any grass groweth therein, like the overthrow of Sodom, and Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboim, which the LORD overthrew in his anger, and in his wrath:
Die Völker werden sich fragen: ›Warum hat der HERR das getan? Was hat ihn so zornig gemacht?‹
Even all nations shall say, Wherefore hath the LORD done thus unto this land? what meaneth the heat of this great anger?
Und man wird ihnen antworten: ›Die Menschen dieses Landes haben den Bund gebrochen, den der HERR, der Gott ihrer Vorfahren, mit ihrem Volk schloss, als er es aus Ägypten herausführte.
Then men shall say, Because they have forsaken the covenant of the LORD God of their fathers, which he made with them when he brought them forth out of the land of Egypt:
Sie verehrten Götter, die sie vorher nicht kannten, und beteten sie an, obwohl der Herr es ihnen nicht erlaubt hatte.
For they went and served other gods, and worshipped them, gods whom they knew not, and whom he had not given unto them:
Deshalb wurde er sehr zornig auf sie und setzte alle Fluchandrohungen in die Tat um, die in diesem Buch aufgeschrieben sind.
And the anger of the LORD was kindled against this land, to bring upon it all the curses that are written in this book:
In seinem großen Zorn verstieß er sie aus ihrer Heimat und vertrieb sie in ein anderes Land, wo sie heute noch leben.‹
And the LORD rooted them out of their land in anger, and in wrath, and in great indignation, and cast them into another land, as it is this day.
Vieles, was der HERR, unser Gott, tut, bleibt uns verborgen. Doch was er von uns erwartet, das hat er uns eindeutig mitgeteilt. Er hat uns seine Gebote gegeben, die in diesem Gesetzbuch aufgeschrieben sind. Ihnen sollen wir und unsere Nachkommen für alle Zeiten gehorchen.«
