Meine lieben Freunde! All dies hat uns Gott versprochen. Darum wollen wir uns von allem trennen, was uns verunreinigt — sei es in unseren Gedanken oder in unserem Verhalten. In Ehrfurcht vor Gott wollen wir immer mehr so leben, wie es ihm gefällt.
Receive us; we have wronged no man, we have corrupted no man, we have defrauded no man.
Vertraut uns doch! Wir haben ja keinem von euch Unrecht getan. Wir haben niemanden zugrunde gerichtet und keinen von euch betrogen.
I speak not this to condemn you: for I have said before, that ye are in our hearts to die and live with you.
Ich sage das nicht, um euch zu verurteilen. Denn ich habe euch ja vorhin gesagt, dass ihr einen besonderen Platz in unseren Herzen habt. Wir sind untrennbar miteinander verbunden, im Leben und im Sterben.
Great is my boldness of speech toward you, great is my glorying of you: I am filled with comfort, I am exceeding joyful in all our tribulation.
Ich vertraue euch in jeder Beziehung und bin sogar stolz auf euch. Trotz aller Schwierigkeiten bin ich getröstet, und meine Freude ist unbeschreiblich groß.
For, when we were come into Macedonia, our flesh had no rest, but we were troubled on every side; without were fightings, within were fears.
Als wir nach Mazedonien kamen, waren wir zunächst sehr beunruhigt. Überall gab es Schwierigkeiten: Wir mussten alle möglichen Anfeindungen ertragen und waren zudem selbst voller Angst und Sorgen.
Nevertheless God, that comforteth those that are cast down, comforted us by the coming of Titus;
Aber Gott hilft den Mutlosen. Er hat uns durch die Ankunft von Titus getröstet;
And not by his coming only, but by the consolation wherewith he was comforted in you, when he told us your earnest desire, your mourning, your fervent mind toward me; so that I rejoiced the more.
und das nicht nur, weil Titus endlich wieder bei uns war. Noch mehr haben wir uns darüber gefreut, dass Titus bei euch so viel Ermutigendes erfahren hat. Er hat uns davon berichtet, wie sehnlich ihr meinen Besuch erwartet, wie leid euch das Geschehene tut und mit welchem Eifer ihr euch für mich einsetzt. Ich kann euch gar nicht sagen, wie sehr ich mich darüber gefreut habe.
For though I made you sorry with a letter, I do not repent, though I did repent: for I perceive that the same epistle hath made you sorry, though it were but for a season.
Jetzt bereue ich auch nicht, dass ich euch den Brief geschrieben habe, der euch so erschüttert hat. Zwar dachte ich schon, ich hätte ihn gar nicht abschicken sollen — eben weil ihr wegen des Briefes eine Zeit lang traurig gewesen seid,
Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing.
doch jetzt bin ich froh, dass ich ihn geschrieben habe. Natürlich nicht, weil ihr traurig gewesen seid, sondern weil euch dies zum Nachdenken und zur Umkehr gebracht hat. Genau das war Gottes Absicht, und deshalb hat euch unser Brief auch nicht geschadet.
For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.
Denn die von Gott bewirkte Traurigkeit führt zur Umkehr und bringt Rettung. Und wer sollte das jemals bereuen! Nur die Traurigkeit, die rein menschlicher Art ist, bewirkt den Tod.
For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge! In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter.
Bedenkt doch, was Gott alles durch eure Traurigkeit erreicht hat! Wie viel guten Willen zeigt ihr jetzt, wie bereitwillig habt ihr euch entschuldigt, und wie sehr bemüht ihr euch zu beweisen, dass ihr euch nicht mitschuldig machen wollt! Jetzt seid ihr über das Vorgefallene empört, wie groß ist eure Furcht vor den Folgen! Ihr wünscht euch sehr, mich wiederzusehen. Eure Entschlossenheit hat dazu geführt, dass der Schuldige bestraft wurde. Ihr habt damit bewiesen, dass euch in dieser Sache keine Schuld trifft.
Wherefore, though I wrote unto you, I did it not for his cause that had done the wrong, nor for his cause that suffered wrong, but that our care for you in the sight of God might appear unto you.
Ich habe euch meinen Brief also letztlich nicht geschrieben, weil es mir um den ging, der Unrecht getan hat, oder den, dem Unrecht geschehen ist. Es kam mir allein darauf an, dass ihr vor Gott zeigen konntet, wie sehr ihr euch für uns einsetzt.
Therefore we were comforted in your comfort: yea, and exceedingly the more joyed we for the joy of Titus, because his spirit was refreshed by you all.
Nun sind wir sehr erleichtert und getröstet. Besonders schön war es für uns mitzuerleben, mit welcher Freude Titus von euch allen berichtet hat. Seine Begegnung mit euch hat ihn sehr ermutigt und gestärkt.
For if I have boasted any thing to him of you, I am not ashamed; but as we spake all things to you in truth, even so our boasting, which I made before Titus, is found a truth.
Ich hatte ihm so viel Gutes von euch erzählt, und ihr habt mich nicht enttäuscht. Wir haben euch immer die Wahrheit gesagt, und nun durfte Titus feststellen, dass wir auch ihm gegenüber die Wahrheit gesagt haben, als wir euch lobten.
And his inward affection is more abundant toward you, whilst he remembereth the obedience of you all, how with fear and trembling ye received him.
Er liebt euch jetzt noch mehr, denn er hat eure Bereitschaft zum Gehorsam gesehen, nachdem ihr ihn voller Angst und Bangen aufgenommen habt.
