Frühmorgens befahl Josua dem Volk, von Schittim aufzubrechen. Sie erreichten den Jordan, überquerten ihn aber noch nicht, sondern schlugen zunächst ihre Zelte am östlichen Ufer auf.
And it came to pass after three days, that the officers went through the host;
Nach drei Tagen ließ Josua die führenden Männer durch das Lager gehen.
And they commanded the people, saying, When ye see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, and the priests the Levites bearing it, then ye shall remove from your place, and go after it.
Sie sollten ausrufen: »Sobald ihr seht, dass die Priester vom Stamm Levi die Bundeslade des HERRN, eures Gottes, tragen, brecht euer Lager ab und folgt ihnen!
Yet there shall be a space between you and it, about two thousand cubits by measure: come not near unto it, that ye may know the way by which ye must go: for ye have not passed this way heretofore.
Haltet aber einen Abstand von ungefähr 1000 Metern zwischen euch und den Priestern, damit ihr der Bundeslade nicht zu nahe kommt. Sie zeigt euch den Weg, den ihr gehen sollt, denn ihr kennt ihn ja noch nicht.«
And Joshua said unto the people, Sanctify yourselves: for to morrow the LORD will do wonders among you.
Dann sprach Josua selbst zum Volk: »Reinigt euch und bereitet euch darauf vor, Gott zu begegnen! Morgen wird er vor euren Augen Wunder tun.«
And Joshua spake unto the priests, saying, Take up the ark of the covenant, and pass over before the people. And they took up the ark of the covenant, and went before the people.
Am nächsten Tag forderte Josua die Priester auf: »Nehmt die Bundeslade und tragt sie vor dem Volk her!« Sie folgten seinem Befehl.
And the LORD said unto Joshua, This day will I begin to magnify thee in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee.
Darauf sprach der HERR zu Josua: »Ich will heute damit beginnen, dir bei allen Israeliten Achtung zu verschaffen. Sie sollen wissen, dass ich dir beistehe, so wie ich Mose beigestanden habe.
And thou shalt command the priests that bear the ark of the covenant, saying, When ye are come to the brink of the water of Jordan, ye shall stand still in Jordan.
Befiehl den Priestern, mit der Bundeslade anzuhalten, sobald ihre Füße das Wasser des Jordan berühren.«
And Joshua said unto the children of Israel, Come hither, and hear the words of the LORD your God.
Josua ließ die Israeliten zusammenkommen und rief ihnen zu: »Hört, was der HERR, euer Gott, euch sagt:
And Joshua said, Hereby ye shall know that the living God is among you, and that he will without fail drive out from before you the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Hivites, and the Perizzites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Jebusites.
Ihr sollt wissen, dass der lebendige Gott bei euch ist und dass er ganz sicher für euch alle Völker eures neuen Landes vertreiben wird: die Kanaaniter, Hetiter, Hiwiter, Perisiter, Girgaschiter, Amoriter und Jebusiter.
Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth passeth over before you into Jordan.
Seht, hier ist die Bundeslade des Herrn, dem die ganze Welt gehört! Die Priester werden sie vor euch her in den Jordan tragen.
Now therefore take you twelve men out of the tribes of Israel, out of every tribe a man.
Sobald ihre Füße den Jordan berühren, wird das Wasser sich flussaufwärts stauen und wie ein Wall stehen bleiben. Wenn das geschehen ist, brauche ich zwölf Männer von euch. Wählt aus jedem Stamm einen aus!«
And it came to pass, when the people removed from their tents, to pass over Jordan, and the priests bearing the ark of the covenant before the people;
Das Volk brach seine Zelte ab und war bereit, den Fluss zu überqueren. Vor ihnen gingen die Priester mit der Bundeslade.
And as they that bare the ark were come unto Jordan, and the feet of the priests that bare the ark were dipped in the brim of the water, (for Jordan overfloweth all his banks all the time of harvest,)
Der Jordan war wie jedes Jahr zur Erntezeit über die Ufer getreten. Als nun die Träger der Bundeslade das Wasser berührten,
That the waters which came down from above stood and rose up upon an heap very far from the city Adam, that is beside Zaretan: and those that came down toward the sea of the plain, even the salt sea, failed, and were cut off: and the people passed over right against Jericho.
staute es sich. Es stand wie ein Wall sehr weit flussaufwärts in der Nähe des Ortes Adam, der bei Zaretan liegt. Das Wasser unterhalb des Walles lief zum Toten Meer hin ab. So konnte das Volk durch das Flussbett gehen. Vor ihnen lag die Stadt Jericho.
And the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood firm on dry ground in the midst of Jordan, and all the Israelites passed over on dry ground, until all the people were passed clean over Jordan.
Die Priester mit der Bundeslade des HERRN standen auf festem Grund mitten im Jordan, und die Israeliten zogen trockenen Fußes an ihnen vorüber ans andere Ufer.
