And to our beloved Apphia, and Archippus our fellowsoldier, and to the church in thy house:
an unsere Schwester Aphia, an Archippus, der sich wie wir mit aller Kraft für die rettende Botschaft einsetzt, und an alle anderen Christen, die sich in Philemons Haus versammeln.
Grace to you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Philemon's Faith and Love
I thank my God, making mention of thee always in my prayers,

Lieber Philemon! Ich danke meinem Gott immer wieder, wenn ich im Gebet an dich denke.
Hearing of thy love and faith, which thou hast toward the Lord Jesus, and toward all saints;
Denn ich habe von deinem Glauben an unseren Herrn Jesus gehört und davon, wie du allen Christen in Liebe verbunden bist.
That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus.
Ich bete, dass unser gemeinsamer Glaube in dir weiter wächst und du immer mehr erkennst, wie reich uns Jesus Christus beschenkt hat.
For we have great joy and consolation in thy love, because the bowels of the saints are refreshed by thee, brother.
Durch die Liebe, die du anderen erwiesen hast, habe auch ich viel Freude und Ermutigung erfahren, denn ich weiß, wie oft du, lieber Bruder, andere Christen in ihrem Glauben gestärkt hast.
Paul's Appeal for Onesimus
Wherefore, though I might be much bold in Christ to enjoin thee that which is convenient,

Aus diesem Grund möchte ich dich jetzt um etwas bitten, was ich als Apostel von Jesus Christus auch mit gutem Recht von dir verlangen könnte.
Yet for love's sake I rather beseech thee, being such an one as Paul the aged, and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ.
Doch um der Liebe willen möchte ich dir nichts befehlen, sondern dich schlicht und einfach bitten als ein alter Mann, den man jetzt auch noch ins Gefängnis geworfen hat, weil er die rettende Botschaft von Jesus Christus verkündet.
I beseech thee for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my bonds:
Es geht um deinen Sklaven Onesimus, der hier durch mich zum Glauben an Christus gefunden hat und für mich deswegen wie ein Sohn geworden ist.
Which in time past was to thee unprofitable, but now profitable to thee and to me:
Möglich, dass er früher seinem Namen keine Ehre gemacht hat und für dich nicht besonders nützlich war. Aber wie viel Nutzen kann er nun dir und mir bringen!
Whom I have sent again: thou therefore receive him, that is, mine own bowels:
Ich schicke ihn jetzt zu dir zurück und mit ihm mein eigenes Herz.
Whom I would have retained with me, that in thy stead he might have ministered unto me in the bonds of the gospel:
Wie gern hätte ich ihn noch bei mir behalten, solange ich für die rettende Botschaft im Gefängnis sein muss. Er hätte mir helfen können, so wie du selbst es tun würdest.
But without thy mind would I do nothing; that thy benefit should not be as it were of necessity, but willingly.
Aber ich wollte ihn nicht ohne deine Einwilligung hierbehalten. Denn eine gute Tat sollte nicht erzwungen sein, sondern freiwillig geschehen.
For perhaps he therefore departed for a season, that thou shouldest receive him for ever;
Vielleicht ist dir Onesimus nur deshalb für eine kurze Zeit genommen worden, damit du ihn für immer zurückerhältst.
Not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much more unto thee, both in the flesh, and in the Lord?
Er kommt jetzt nämlich nicht nur als dein Sklave wieder, du wirst viel mehr an ihm haben: einen geliebten Bruder. Das ist er schon für mich gewesen. Wie viel mehr wird er es für dich sein; er gehört ja zu dir — als Mensch und nun auch als Christ.
If thou count me therefore a partner, receive him as myself.
Wenn ich also dein Freund und Bruder bin, dann nimm Onesimus auf, als würde ich selbst zu dir kommen.
If he hath wronged thee, or oweth thee ought, put that on mine account;
Sollte dir durch seine Flucht irgendein Schaden entstanden sein, oder sollte er dir etwas schulden, dann stell es mir in Rechnung.
I Paul have written it with mine own hand, I will repay it: albeit I do not say to thee how thou owest unto me even thine own self besides.
Ich werde es bezahlen. Dafür bürge ich hier mit meiner Unterschrift. Was du mir allerdings schuldest, weil du durch mich zum Glauben an Jesus Christus gefunden hast, davon will ich hier gar nicht reden.
Yea, brother, let me have joy of thee in the Lord: refresh my bowels in the Lord.
Philemon, mein lieber Bruder! Bereite mir doch diese Freude und erfülle meine Bitte, weil wir beide an den Herrn glauben und durch Jesus Christus verbunden sind.
Having confidence in thy obedience I wrote unto thee, knowing that thou wilt also do more than I say.
Ich schreibe dir im Vertrauen darauf, dass du dich nach mir richten wirst. Ja, ich bin sicher, du wirst noch mehr tun, als ich von dir erbitte.
But withal prepare me also a lodging: for I trust that through your prayers I shall be given unto you.
Einen Wunsch hätte ich außerdem noch: Halte bitte eine Unterkunft für mich bereit. Denn ich rechne damit, dass Gott eure Gebete erhört und uns ein Wiedersehen schenkt.
