And it came to pass in those days, that the Philistines gathered their armies together for warfare, to fight with Israel. And Achish said unto David, Know thou assuredly, that thou shalt go out with me to battle, thou and thy men.

In dieser Zeit zogen die Philister wieder ihre Truppen zusammen, um Israel anzugreifen. Achisch sagte zu David: »Dir ist doch wohl klar, dass du und deine Männer mit uns in den Kampf ziehen?«
And David said to Achish, Surely thou shalt know what thy servant can do. And Achish said to David, Therefore will I make thee keeper of mine head for ever.
»Natürlich«, antwortete David, »du wirst selbst sehen, was ich fertigbringe.« »Gut«, fuhr Achisch fort, »ich will, dass du für die ganze Zeit dieses Feldzugs mein Leibwächter bist.«
Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had lamented him, and buried him in Ramah, even in his own city. And Saul had put away those that had familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land.
Samuel war gestorben und in seiner Heimatstadt Rama beerdigt worden. Ganz Israel hatte für ihn die Totenklage gehalten. Als Saul König geworden war, hatte er alle Totenbeschwörer und Wahrsager aus Israel vertrieben.
And the Philistines gathered themselves together, and came and pitched in Shunem: and Saul gathered all Israel together, and they pitched in Gilboa.
Nun hatten die Philister ihre Truppen zusammengezogen und ihr Lager bei Schunem aufgeschlagen. Auch Saul ließ die israelitischen Soldaten antreten. Ihr Lager befand sich auf dem Gilboagebirge.
And when Saul saw the host of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart greatly trembled.
Als Saul das riesige Heer der Philister sah, packte ihn die Angst.
And when Saul inquired of the LORD, the LORD answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets.
Er fragte den HERRN um Rat, erhielt aber keine Antwort, weder durch Träume noch durch das Los noch durch einen Propheten.
Saul and the Medium of Endor
Then said Saul unto his servants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and inquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman that hath a familiar spirit at Endor.

In seiner Verzweiflung befahl Saul seinen Dienern: »Geht los und sucht eine Totenbeschwörerin! Ich will zu ihr gehen und sie um Rat fragen.« Die Diener antworteten: »In En-Dor gibt es eine Frau, die Tote beschwören kann.«
And Saul disguised himself, and put on other raiment, and he went, and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night: and he said, I pray thee, divine unto me by the familiar spirit, and bring me him up, whom I shall name unto thee.
Saul verhüllte sein Gesicht, zog andere Kleider an und machte sich mit zwei Männern auf den Weg nach En-Dor. Es war Nacht, als er bei der Frau ankam. »Ich möchte, dass du mir durch den Geist eines Verstorbenen die Zukunft voraussagst«, begann Saul. »Ich will mit einem ganz bestimmten Menschen reden. Bitte beschwör seinen Geist, damit er aus dem Totenreich heraufkommt!«
And the woman said unto him, Behold, thou knowest what Saul hath done, how he hath cut off those that have familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land: wherefore then layest thou a snare for my life, to cause me to die?
Doch die Frau entgegnete: »Du weißt doch, dass König Saul das verboten hat. Hast du vergessen, mit welcher Härte er alle Totenbeschwörer und Wahrsager aus Israel vertrieben hat? Warum stellst du mir diese Falle? Willst du mich töten?«
And Saul sware to her by the LORD, saying, As the LORD liveth, there shall no punishment happen to thee for this thing.
Da legte Saul einen Eid ab: »Ich schwöre dir beim HERRN, dass du dafür nicht bestraft wirst!«
Then said the woman, Whom shall I bring up unto thee? And he said, Bring me up Samuel.
»Wen soll ich dir heraufholen?«, wollte die Frau wissen. »Ruf Samuel herauf!«, antwortete Saul.
And when the woman saw Samuel, she cried with a loud voice: and the woman spake to Saul, saying, Why hast thou deceived me? for thou art Saul.
Als die Totenbeschwörerin Samuel kommen sah, schrie sie laut auf und fuhr Saul an: »Warum hast du mich hereingelegt? Du selbst bist Saul!«
And the king said unto her, Be not afraid: for what sawest thou? And the woman said unto Saul, I saw gods ascending out of the earth.
Saul beruhigte sie: »Du brauchst deswegen keine Angst zu haben. Sag, was siehst du?« »Ich sehe einen Geist aus der Erde heraufsteigen«, antwortete sie.
And he said unto her, What form is he of? And she said, An old man cometh up; and he is covered with a mantle. And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he stooped with his face to the ground, and bowed himself.
»Wie sieht er aus?«, fragte Saul. »Es ist ein alter Mann. Er ist in einen Mantel gehüllt.« Da wusste Saul, dass es Samuel war. Voller Ehrfurcht verbeugte er sich, warf sich vor ihm nieder und berührte mit seinem Gesicht den Boden.
And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am sore distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayest make known unto me what I shall do.
»Warum störst du meine Ruhe und lässt mich wieder heraufkommen?«, fragte Samuel ihn. Saul antwortete: »Weil ich keinen Ausweg mehr sehe. Die Philister führen Krieg gegen mich, und Gott hat mich verlassen. Er gibt mir keine Antwort mehr, weder durch Propheten noch durch Träume. Darum habe ich dich rufen lassen, damit du mir weiterhilfst und mir sagst, was ich tun soll.«
Then said Samuel, Wherefore then dost thou ask of me, seeing the LORD is departed from thee, and is become thine enemy?
Samuel entgegnete: »Warum fragst du mich, wenn du doch genau weißt, dass der HERR sich von dir abgewandt hat und dein Feind geworden ist?
And the LORD hath done to him, as he spake by me: for the LORD hath rent the kingdom out of thine hand, and given it to thy neighbour, even to David:
Er führt ja nur aus, was er dir längst durch mich ausrichten ließ: Er nimmt dir die Herrschaft und gibt sie David.
Because thou obeyedst not the voice of the LORD, nor executedst his fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore hath the LORD done this thing unto thee this day.
Der HERR bestraft dich jetzt, weil du ihm damals nicht gehorcht hast, als er dir befahl, seinen glühenden Zorn über die Amalekiter hereinbrechen zu lassen.
Moreover the LORD will also deliver Israel with thee into the hand of the Philistines: and to morrow shalt thou and thy sons be with me: the LORD also shall deliver the host of Israel into the hand of the Philistines.
Aber das ist noch nicht alles: Der HERR wird dich und mit dir ganz Israel in die Gewalt der Philister geben. Morgen schon werden du und deine Söhne bei mir im Totenreich sein. Außerdem wird der HERR dein ganzes Heer den Philistern ausliefern.«
Then Saul fell straightway all along on the earth, and was sore afraid, because of the words of Samuel: and there was no strength in him; for he had eaten no bread all the day, nor all the night.
Als Saul das hörte, fuhr ihm der Schreck in die Glieder, und er brach zusammen. Er war ohnehin schon geschwächt, weil er den ganzen Tag und die ganze Nacht nichts gegessen hatte.
And the woman came unto Saul, and saw that he was sore troubled, and said unto him, Behold, thine handmaid hath obeyed thy voice, and I have put my life in my hand, and have hearkened unto thy words which thou spakest unto me.
Als die Totenbeschwörerin sah, wie bestürzt Saul war, trat sie zu ihm und sagte: »Mein König, ich habe vorhin auf dich gehört. Ich habe mein Leben aufs Spiel gesetzt und getan, was du von mir verlangt hast.
Now therefore, I pray thee, hearken thou also unto the voice of thine handmaid, and let me set a morsel of bread before thee; and eat, that thou mayest have strength, when thou goest on thy way.
Nun lass dir auch von mir etwas sagen: Ich will dir schnell etwas zu essen machen. Du musst dich stärken für den Rückweg.«
But he refused, and said, I will not eat. But his servants, together with the woman, compelled him; and he hearkened unto their voice. So he arose from the earth, and sat upon the bed.
Doch Saul wehrte ab: »Ich will jetzt nichts essen!« Aber seine Diener und die Frau bedrängten ihn so sehr, dass er schließlich nachgab. Er stand vom Boden auf und setzte sich auf das Bett.
And the woman had a fat calf in the house; and she hasted, and killed it, and took flour, and kneaded it, and did bake unleavened bread thereof:
Die Frau hatte im Stall ein gemästetes Kalb. Das schlachtete sie in aller Eile. Dann nahm sie etwas Mehl, knetete einen Teig und backte schnell ein paar Fladenbrote.
