Sarai and Hagar

Now Sarai, Abram’s wife had borne him no children, and she had an Egyptian maid whose name was Hagar.

Сара, Аврамова дружина, не народжувала йому. Та була в неї рабиня-єгиптянка на ім’я Агар.

So Sarai said to Abram, “Now behold, the LORD has prevented me from bearing children. Please go in to my maid; perhaps I will obtain children through her.” And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.

Тож Сара сказала Аврамові: Ось стримав мене Господь, щоб не родити. Тому ввійди до моєї рабині, щоб мати від неї дітей. І Аврам послухав голосу Сари.

After Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, Abram’s wife Sarai took Hagar the Egyptian, her maid, and gave her to her husband Abram as his wife.

Аврамова дружина Сара — по десятьох роках проживання Аврама в землі Ханаанській — взяла Агар, свою рабиню-єгиптянку, та віддала її Аврамові, своєму чоловікові, за жінку.

He went in to Hagar, and she conceived; and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her sight.

Він увійшов до Агари, — і вона зачала. І коли вона побачила, що вагітна, то її господиня відчула від неї зневажливе ставлення.

And Sarai said to Abram, “May the wrong done me be upon you. I gave my maid into your arms, but when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her sight. May the LORD judge between you and me.”

Тож Сара сказала Аврамові: Я скривджена тобою. Я віддала свою рабиню до твого лона, та вона, відчувши, що завагітніла, почала мене зневажати. Нехай Бог розсудить між мною і тобою.

But Abram said to Sarai, “Behold, your maid is in your power; do to her what is good in your sight.” So Sarai treated her harshly, and she fled from her presence.

Аврам же відповів Сарі: Ось твоя рабиня у твоїх руках. Роби з нею все, що тобі до вподоби. Після цього Сара поводилася з нею суворо — і та втекла з-перед її обличчя.

Now the angel of the LORD found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, by the spring on the way to Shur.

Та її знайшов ангел Господа Бога біля джерела води в пустелі, біля джерела на дорозі до Сура.

He said, “Hagar, Sarai’s maid, where have you come from and where are you going?” And she said, “I am fleeing from the presence of my mistress Sarai.”

І сказав їй Господній ангел: Агаро, Сарина рабине, звідки йдеш і куди прямуєш? Вона ж відповіла: Я втікаю з-перед обличчя Сари, моєї господині.

9

Then the angel of the LORD said to her, “Return to your mistress, and submit yourself to her authority.”

А Господній ангел їй сказав: Повернися до своєї господині й будь покірною в її руках.

10

Moreover, the angel of the LORD said to her, “I will greatly multiply your descendants so that they will be too many to count.”

Сильно розмножу [1] твоє потомство, — промовив до неї Господній ангел, — і не порахувати його — таким численним воно буде.

11

The angel of the LORD said to her further,
“Behold, you are with child,
And you will bear a son;
And you shall call his name Ishmael,
Because the LORD has given heed to your affliction.

І сказав їй Господній ангел: Ось ти завагітніла й народиш сина, і даси йому ім’я Ізмаїл, бо почув Господь про твоє приниження.

12

“He will be a wild donkey of a man,
His hand will be against everyone,
And everyone’s hand will be against him;
And he will live to the east of all his brothers.”

Він буде людиною-кочовиком. Руки його — на всіх, і руки всіх — на ньому; він житиме перед обличчям усіх своїх братів.

13

Then she called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, “You are a God who sees”; for she said, “Have I even remained alive here after seeing Him?”

І прикликала Агар Ім’я Господа, Який розмовляв із нею: Ти — Бог, Який побачив мене. Оскільки вона сказала: Побачила перед собою Того, Хто з’явився мені.

Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.

Ось чому і назвала джерело — Джерело, біля якого я бачила. Це між Кадисом і Варадом.

15

So Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.

15

І народила Агар Аврамові сина; і Аврам дав ім’я своєму синові, якого народила йому Агар, — Ізмаїл.

16

Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to him.

Аврамові ж було вісімдесят шість років, коли Агар народила Аврамові Ізмаїла.
