Joseph’s Success in Egypt

Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an Egyptian officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the bodyguard, bought him from the Ishmaelites, who had taken him down there.

А Йосифа привели до Єгипту. І купив його з рук ізмаїльців, які привели його туди, Петефрій — євнух фараона, начальник охорони, чоловік-єгиптянин.

The LORD was with Joseph, so he became a successful man. And he was in the house of his master, the Egyptian.

Та Господь був з Йосифом. Він був людиною здібною і перебував у домі біля пана-єгиптянина.

Now his master saw that the LORD was with him and how the LORD caused all that he did to prosper in his hand.

Його пан знав, що Господь з ним, і що б він не робив, — Господь виводить на добре.

4

So Joseph found favor in his sight and became his personal servant; and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he owned he put in his charge.

4

І знайшов Йосиф ласку у свого пана, бо догоджав йому, і той настановив його над своїм домом, і все, що мав, він віддав у руки Йосифа.

It came about that from the time he made him overseer in his house and over all that he owned, the LORD blessed the Egyptian’s house on account of Joseph; thus the LORD’S blessing was upon all that he owned, in the house and in the field.

Сталося ж після того, як поставив його над своїм домом, і над усім, що було в нього, — поблагословив Господь дім єгиптянина задля Йосифа, і Господнє благословення було на всьому його маєтку, у домі та на полі.

So he left everything he owned in Joseph’s charge; and with him there he did not concern himself with anything except the food which he ate.
Now Joseph was handsome in form and appearance.

І все, що належало йому, він передав у руки Йосифа й нічого не знав про своє, хіба що про хліб, який сам їв. А Йосиф був гарної будови і дуже вродливий з обличчя.

It came about after these events that his master’s wife looked with desire at Joseph, and she said, “Lie with me.”

І сталося після цих подій, що дружина його пана кинула свій погляд на Йосифа і сказала: Переспи зі мною.

But he refused and said to his master’s wife, “Behold, with me here, my master does not concern himself with anything in the house, and he has put all that he owns in my charge.

Він же не захотів і сказав дружині свого пана: Якщо мій пан завдяки мені про ніщо у своєму домі не знає, а все, що належить йому, передав у мої руки,

9

“There is no one greater in this house than I, and he has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do this great evil and sin against God?”

і в цьому домі немає більшого від мене, і не заборонено мені нічого, крім тебе, бо ти — його дружина, — то як зроблю цей поганий учинок і згрішу перед Богом?

As she spoke to Joseph day after day, he did not listen to her to lie beside her or be with her.

І хоч вона день у день говорила Йосифові, щоб лягти з нею і щоби зійтися з нею, та він її не слухав.

Now it happened one day that he went into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the household was there inside.

Сталося ж, що одного з таких днів Йосиф увійшов до будинку виконувати свої справи, а всередині не було нікого з прислуги,

She caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me!” And he left his garment in her hand and fled, and went outside.

вона схопила його за одяг, наполягаючи: Ляж зі мною! Та він утік, залишивши одяг у її руках, і вибіг надвір.

13

When she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and had fled outside,

І сталося: коли вона побачила, що він залишив свій одяг у її руках і втік, і вибіг надвір,

14

she called to the men of her household and said to them, “See, he has brought in a Hebrew to us to make sport of us; he came in to me to lie with me, and I screamed.

то покликала тих, які були в домі, і сказала їм, стверджуючи: Дивіться, привів нам раба-єврея, щоб насміхався з нас! Він увійшов до мене, кажучи: Переспи зі мною, — та я закричала гучним голосом.

15

“When he heard that I raised my voice and screamed, he left his garment beside me and fled and went outside.”

Коли ж він почув, що я зняла галас і закричала, то залишив свій одяг у мене, утік і вибіг надвір.

16

So she left his garment beside her until his master came home.

16

Вона залишила одяг при собі, доки не прийшов пан до свого дому.

17

Then she spoke to him with these words, “The Hebrew slave, whom you brought to us, came in to me to make sport of me;

До нього вона заговорила цими ж словами, кажучи: Увійшов до мене раб-єврей, якого ти привів до нас, аби поглузувати з мене, і сказав мені: Пересплю з тобою.

18

and as I raised my voice and screamed, he left his garment beside me and fled outside.”

А коли він почув, що я зняла галас і закричала, то залишив свій одяг у мене, утік і вибіг надвір.

19

Joseph Imprisoned

Now when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spoke to him, saying, “This is what your slave did to me,” his anger burned.

19

Сталося ж: коли його пан почув слова своєї дружини, які сказала йому, промовляючи: Так учинив мені твій раб, — то запалав гнівом.

20

So Joseph’s master took him and put him into the jail, the place where the king’s prisoners were confined; and he was there in the jail.

20

І володар, взявши Йосифа, кинув його до в’язниці — до того місця, де в тій в’язниці тримали в’язнів царя.

21

But the LORD was with Joseph and extended kindness to him, and gave him favor in the sight of the chief jailer.

21

Та Господь був з Йосифом і злив на нього милість, і дарував йому ласку перед начальником в’язниці;

22

The chief jailer committed to Joseph’s charge all the prisoners who were in the jail; so that whatever was done there, he was responsible for it.

22

і начальник в’язниці передав в’язницю та всіх ув’язнених, які були у в’язниці, і все, що там відбувалося, — в руки Йосифа.

23

The chief jailer did not supervise anything under Joseph’s charge because the LORD was with him; and whatever he did, the LORD made to prosper.

23

Начальник в’язниці не вникав у жодну справу, оскільки все було в руках Йосифа, бо Господь був з ним, і все, що він чинив, Господь добре скеровував його руками.
