Israel’s Last Days
Now it came about after these things that Joseph was told, “Behold, your father is sick.” So he took his two sons Manasseh and Ephraim with him.

Einige Zeit danach sagte man zu Josef: Siehe, dein Vater ist krank. Da nahm Josef seine beiden Söhne mit, Manasse und Efraim,
When it was told to Jacob, “Behold, your son Joseph has come to you,” Israel collected his strength and sat up in the bed.
und ließ Jakob melden: Siehe, dein Sohn Josef ist zu dir gekommen. Israel nahm seine Kräfte zusammen und setzte sich im Bett auf.
Then Jacob said to Joseph, “God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me,
Dann sagte Jakob zu Josef: El-Schaddai ist mir zu Lus im Land Kanaan erschienen und hat mich gesegnet.
and He said to me, ‘Behold, I will make you fruitful and numerous, and I will make you a company of peoples, and will give this land to your descendants after you for an everlasting possession.’
Er hat zu mir gesagt: Siehe, ich mache dich fruchtbar und vermehre dich, ich mache dich zu einer Schar von Völkern und gebe dieses Land deinen Nachkommen zu ewigem Besitz.
“Now your two sons, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, are mine; Ephraim and Manasseh shall be mine, as Reuben and Simeon are.
Jetzt sollen deine beiden Söhne, die dir im Land Ägypten geboren wurden, bevor ich zu dir nach Ägypten kam, mir gehören. Efraim und Manasse sollen mir wie Ruben und Simeon gehören.
“But your offspring that have been born after them shall be yours; they shall be called by the names of their brothers in their inheritance.
Die Nachkommen aber, die du erst nach ihnen gezeugt hast, sollen dir gehören; nach dem Namen ihrer Brüder soll man sie in ihrem Erbteil benennen.
“Now as for me, when I came from Paddan, Rachel died, to my sorrow, in the land of Canaan on the journey, when there was still some distance to go to Ephrath; and I buried her there on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).”
Als ich aus Paddan-Aram kam, starb mir unterwegs Rahel im Land Kanaan; nur noch eine kurze Strecke war es bis Efrata. Ich begrub sie dort auf dem Weg nach Efrata, das jetzt Betlehem heißt.
When Israel saw Joseph’s sons, he said, “Who are these?”

Joseph said to his father, “They are my sons, whom God has given me here.” So he said, “Bring them to me, please, that I may bless them.”
Josef sagte zu seinem Vater: Meine Söhne sind es, die mir Gott hier geschenkt hat. Da sagte Israel: Bring sie her zu mir, ich will sie segnen!
Now the eyes of Israel were so dim from age that he could not see. Then Joseph brought them close to him, and he kissed them and embraced them.
Israels Augen waren vor Alter schwer geworden, er konnte nicht mehr recht sehen. Er ließ die Söhne Josefs zu sich herantreten, küsste und umarmte sie.
Israel said to Joseph, “I never expected to see your face, and behold, God has let me see your children as well.”
Dann sagte Israel zu Josef: Ich hatte nicht mehr geglaubt, dich jemals wiederzusehen. Doch siehe, Gott hat mich sogar noch deine Nachkommen sehen lassen.
Then Joseph took them from his knees, and bowed with his face to the ground.
Josef holte sie von seinen Knien weg und sie warfen sich mit ihrem Gesicht zur Erde nieder.
Joseph took them both, Ephraim with his right hand toward Israel’s left, and Manasseh with his left hand toward Israel’s right, and brought them close to him.
Dann nahm Josef beide, Efraim an seine Rechte, zur Linken Israels, und Manasse an seine Linke, zur Rechten Israels, und führte sie zu ihm hin.
But Israel stretched out his right hand and laid it on the head of Ephraim, who was the younger, and his left hand on Manasseh’s head, crossing his hands, although Manasseh was the firstborn.
Israel streckte seine Rechte aus und legte sie Efraim auf den Kopf, obwohl er der jüngere war, seine Linke aber legte er Manasse auf den Kopf, wobei er seine Hände überkreuzte, obwohl Manasse der Erstgeborene war.
He blessed Joseph, and said,
“The God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked,
The God who has been my shepherd all my life to this day,

Er segnete Josef und sprach: Gott, vor dem meine Väter Abraham und Isaak ihren Weg gegangen sind, Gott, der mein Hirt war mein Lebtag bis heute,
The angel who has redeemed me from all evil,
Bless the lads;
And may my name live on in them,
And the names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac;
And may they grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.”

der Engel, der mich erlöst hat von jeglichem Unheil, er segne die Knaben. Unter ihnen soll mein Name und der Name meiner Väter Abraham und Isaak genannt werden. Sie sollen sich mitten im Land in Fülle tummeln.
When Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand on Ephraim’s head, it displeased him; and he grasped his father’s hand to remove it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s head.
Als Josef sah, dass sein Vater seine Rechte Efraim auf den Kopf legte, gefiel ihm das nicht. Josef ergriff die Hand seines Vaters, um sie von Efraims Kopf auf den Kopf Manasses hinüberzuziehen,
Joseph said to his father, “Not so, my father, for this one is the firstborn. Place your right hand on his head.”
und er sagte zu seinem Vater: Nicht so, mein Vater! Denn er ist der Erstgeborene; leg deine Rechte ihm auf den Kopf!
But his father refused and said, “I know, my son, I know; he also will become a people and he also will be great. However, his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his descendants shall become a multitude of nations.”
Aber sein Vater weigerte sich und sagte: Ich weiß, mein Sohn, ich weiß, auch er wird zu einem Volk, auch er wird groß sein; aber sein jüngerer Bruder wird größer als er und seine Nachkommen werden zu einer Fülle von Völkern.
He blessed them that day, saying,
“By you Israel will pronounce blessing, saying,
‘May God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh!’”
Thus he put Ephraim before Manasseh.

Er segnete jeden von ihnen an jenem Tag mit den Worten: Durch dich wird Israel segnen und sagen: Gott mache dich wie Efraim und Manasse. So setzte er Efraim vor Manasse.
Then Israel said to Joseph, “Behold, I am about to die, but God will be with you, and bring you back to the land of your fathers.
Israel sagte zu Josef: Sieh, ich sterbe nun. Gott wird mit euch sein und euch in das Land eurer Väter zurückbringen.
