Sheba’s Revolt
Now a worthless fellow happened to be there whose name was Sheba, the son of Bichri, a Benjamite; and he blew the trumpet and said,
“We have no portion in David,
Nor do we have inheritance in the son of Jesse;
Every man to his tents, O Israel!”

Damals lebte ein niederträchtiger Mensch namens Scheba, ein Sohn des Bichri, ein Benjaminiter. Er ließ das Widderhorn blasen und rief: Welchen Anteil haben wir an David? Wir haben keinen Erbbesitz beim Sohn Isais. In deine Zelte, Israel!
So all the men of Israel withdrew from following David and followed Sheba the son of Bichri; but the men of Judah remained steadfast to their king, from the Jordan even to Jerusalem.
Da verließen alle Israeliten Davids Gefolgschaft und folgten Scheba, dem Sohn Bichris. Die Männer aus Juda aber hielten weiter zu ihrem König, vom Jordan bis nach Jerusalem.
Then David came to his house at Jerusalem, and the king took the ten women, the concubines whom he had left to keep the house, and placed them under guard and provided them with sustenance, but did not go in to them. So they were shut up until the day of their death, living as widows.
Als David in sein Haus nach Jerusalem zurückkehrte, nahm der König die zehn Nebenfrauen, die er zurückgelassen hatte, um das Haus zu bewachen, und ließ sie in Gewahrsam bringen. Er versorgte sie, ging aber nicht mehr zu ihnen und sie blieben bis zu ihrem Tod eingesperrt — schon zu Lebzeiten des Mannes im Witwenstand.
Then the king said to Amasa, “Call out the men of Judah for me within three days, and be present here yourself.”
Der König befahl Amasa: Ruf mir in drei Tagen die Männer Judas zusammen; dann sei auch du selbst wieder hier!
So Amasa went to call out the men of Judah, but he delayed longer than the set time which he had appointed him.
Amasa ging, um die Judäer zusammenzurufen. Aber er versäumte die Frist, die der König ihm gesetzt hatte.
And David said to Abishai, “Now Sheba the son of Bichri will do us more harm than Absalom; take your lord’s servants and pursue him, so that he does not find for himself fortified cities and escape from our sight.”
Da sagte David zu Abischai: Nun wird uns Scheba, der Sohn Bichris, gefährlicher als Abschalom. Nimm darum die Knechte deines Herrn mit und verfolg Scheba, damit er nicht die befestigten Städte einnimmt und uns die Augen ausreißt!
So Joab’s men went out after him, along with the Cherethites and the Pelethites and all the mighty men; and they went out from Jerusalem to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri.
Da zogen die Männer Joabs, die Kereter und Peleter und alle Helden hinter ihm her. Sie zogen von Jerusalem aus, um Scheba, den Sohn Bichris, zu verfolgen.
When they were at the large stone which is in Gibeon, Amasa came to meet them. Now Joab was dressed in his military attire, and over it was a belt with a sword in its sheath fastened at his waist; and as he went forward, it fell out.
Als sie bei dem großen Stein von Gibeon waren, war Amasa gerade vor ihnen angekommen. Joab trug einen gegürteten Rock als sein Gewand, mit dem Gürtel des Schwertes darüber. Dieses war in seiner Scheide, an seine Hüfte geschnallt. Während Joab hervortrat, ließ er es zu Boden gleiten.
Joab said to Amasa, “Is it well with you, my brother?” And Joab took Amasa by the beard with his right hand to kiss him.
Joab sagte zu Amasa: Geht es dir gut, mein Bruder? und griff mit der rechten Hand nach dem Bart Amasas, um ihn zu küssen.
Amasa Murdered
But Amasa was not on guard against the sword which was in Joab’s hand so he struck him in the belly with it and poured out his inward parts on the ground, and did not strike him again, and he died. Then Joab and Abishai his brother pursued Sheba the son of Bichri.
Amasa aber achtete nicht auf das Schwert, das Joab in der Hand hatte, und Joab stieß es ihm in den Bauch, sodass seine Eingeweide zu Boden quollen. Amasa starb, ohne dass Joab ein zweites Mal zustieß. Dann setzten Joab und sein Bruder Abischai die Verfolgung Schebas, des Sohnes Bichris, fort.
Now there stood by him one of Joab’s young men, and said, “Whoever favors Joab and whoever is for David, let him follow Joab.”
Einer von den Leuten Joabs aber blieb bei Amasa stehen und rief: Wer zu Joab hält und wer zu David gehört, der folge Joab nach!
But Amasa lay wallowing in his blood in the middle of the highway. And when the man saw that all the people stood still, he removed Amasa from the highway into the field and threw a garment over him when he saw that everyone who came by him stood still.
Amasa aber hatte sich in seinem Blut mitten auf der Straße gewälzt. Als der Mann sah, dass alle Leute stehen blieben, schaffte er Amasa von der Straße weg auf das Feld und warf ein Kleidungsstück über ihn, weil jeder, der vorbeikam und ihn sah, stehen blieb.
Revolt Put Down
As soon as he was removed from the highway, all the men passed on after Joab to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri.
Erst nachdem er ihn von der Straße weggeschafft hatte, zogen alle Männer vorüber und Joab nach, um Scheba, den Sohn Bichris, zu verfolgen.
Now he went through all the tribes of Israel to Abel, even Beth-maacah, and all the Berites; and they were gathered together and also went after him.
Scheba zog in allen Stämmen Israels umher, bis nach Abel-Bet-Maacha. Alle Bichriter sammelten sich um ihn und folgten ihm.
They came and besieged him in Abel Beth-maacah, and they cast up a siege ramp against the city, and it stood by the rampart; and all the people who were with Joab were wreaking destruction in order to topple the wall.
Als aber die Leute Joabs angekommen waren, schlossen sie ihn in Abel-Bet-Maacha ein; sie schütteten einen Damm gegen die Stadt auf, der bis an die Mauer heranreichte, und alle Leute, die bei Joab geblieben waren, bemühten sich, die Mauer zu zerstören und zum Einsturz zu bringen.
Then a wise woman called from the city, “Hear, hear! Please tell Joab, ‘Come here that I may speak with you.’”
Da rief eine kluge Frau aus der Stadt: Hört her! Hört her! Sagt Joab: Komm hierher, ich will mit dir reden.
So he approached her, and the woman said, “Are you Joab?” And he answered, “I am.” Then she said to him, “Listen to the words of your maidservant.” And he answered, “I am listening.”
Er trat zu ihr heran. Die Frau fragte: Bist du Joab? Er antwortete: Ja, ich bin es. Da sagte sie zu ihm: Hör auf die Worte deiner Magd! Er antwortete: Ich höre.
Then she spoke, saying, “Formerly they used to say, ‘They will surely ask advice at Abel,’ and thus they ended the dispute.
Sie sagte: Früher pflegte man zu sagen: Man frage nur in Abel nach, so bringt man es fertig.
“I am of those who are peaceable and faithful in Israel. You are seeking to destroy a city, even a mother in Israel. Why would you swallow up the inheritance of the LORD?”
Wir sind die friedlichsten, treuesten Menschen in Israel. Du aber bist darauf aus, eine Stadt, die für Israel wie eine Mutter ist, zu vernichten. Warum zerstörst du das Erbe des HERRN?
Joab replied, “Far be it, far be it from me that I should swallow up or destroy!
Joab antwortete: Das liegt mir ganz und gar fern: Ich will die Stadt nicht vernichten und zerstören.
“Such is not the case. But a man from the hill country of Ephraim, Sheba the son of Bichri by name, has lifted up his hand against King David. Only hand him over, and I will depart from the city.” And the woman said to Joab, “Behold, his head will be thrown to you over the wall.”
So ist es nicht. Vielmehr hat ein Mann aus dem Gebirge Efraim namens Scheba, ein Sohn Bichris, seine Hand gegen den König, gegen David, erhoben. Ihn allein gebt heraus! Dann werde ich von der Stadt abziehen. Die Frau sagte zu Joab: Gib Acht, sein Kopf wird dir über die Mauer zugeworfen werden.
Then the woman wisely came to all the people. And they cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri and threw it to Joab. So he blew the trumpet, and they were dispersed from the city, each to his tent. Joab also returned to the king at Jerusalem.
Dann ging die kluge Frau zu allen Leuten und sie schlugen Scheba, dem Sohn Bichris, den Kopf ab und warfen ihn Joab zu. Da ließ Joab das Widderhorn blasen und alle zogen von der Stadt ab und gingen wieder zu ihren Zelten; Joab aber kehrte nach Jerusalem zum König zurück.
Now Joab was over the whole army of Israel, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and the Pelethites;
Joab war Befehlshaber des ganzen Heeres der Israeliten und Benaja, der Sohn Jojadas, war der Befehlshaber der Kereter und Peleter.
and Adoram was over the forced labor, and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was the recorder;
Adoniram beaufsichtigte die Fronarbeiten und Joschafat, der Sohn Ahiluds, war der Sprecher des Königs.
and Sheva was scribe, and Zadok and Abiathar were priests;
Schewa war Staatsschreiber und Zadok und Abjatar waren Priester.
