Elisha Promises Food
Then Elisha said, “Listen to the word of the LORD; thus says the LORD, ‘Tomorrow about this time a measure of fine flour will be sold for a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel, in the gate of Samaria.’”

Da ergriff Elisa das Wort. »Hört, was der HERR dazu sagt: Morgen um diese Zeit könnt ihr beim Stadttor von Samaria für ein Silberstück 5 Kilo feines Weizenmehl oder sogar 10 Kilo Gerste kaufen!«
The royal officer on whose hand the king was leaning answered the man of God and said, “Behold, if the LORD should make windows in heaven, could this thing be?” Then he said, “Behold, you will see it with your own eyes, but you will not eat of it.”
Spöttisch antwortete der hohe Offizier, der den König begleitet hatte: »Das ist unmöglich! Sollte der HERR etwa am Himmel ein Fenster öffnen und Getreide herunterschütten?« »Mit eigenen Augen wirst du es sehen«, gab Elisa ihm zurück, »aber essen wirst du nichts davon!«
Four Lepers Relate Arameans’ Flight
Now there were four leprous men at the entrance of the gate; and they said to one another, “Why do we sit here until we die?
Draußen vor dem Stadttor saßen vier aussätzige Männer. Sie sagten zueinander: »Was sollen wir hier sitzen und auf den Tod warten?
“If we say, ‘We will enter the city,’ then the famine is in the city and we will die there; and if we sit here, we die also. Now therefore come, and let us go over to the camp of the Arameans. If they spare us, we will live; and if they kill us, we will but die.”
In der Stadt herrscht Hungersnot. Gehen wir in die Stadt, dann verhungern wir, bleiben wir hier, verhungern wir auch. Warum also nicht ins Lager der Syrer gehen? Wenn sie uns am Leben lassen, dann haben wir noch einmal Glück gehabt. Und wenn sie uns umbringen, ist es auch egal. Hier wären wir ja sowieso gestorben.«
They arose at twilight to go to the camp of the Arameans; when they came to the outskirts of the camp of the Arameans, behold, there was no one there.
Sobald es dunkel wurde, machten die vier sich auf den Weg zum Heerlager der Syrer. Doch als sie zu den ersten Zelten kamen, konnten sie weit und breit keinen Menschen entdecken.
For the Lord had caused the army of the Arameans to hear a sound of chariots and a sound of horses, even the sound of a great army, so that they said to one another, “Behold, the king of Israel has hired against us the kings of the Hittites and the kings of the Egyptians, to come upon us.”
Denn der Herr hatte die Syrer das Donnern von Pferdehufen und den Lärm heranbrausender Streitwagen hören lassen, als ob ein riesiges Heer im Anmarsch wäre. »Das sind die Könige der Hetiter und der Ägypter mit ihren Truppen!«, hatten die Syrer gedacht. »Bestimmt hat der König von Israel sie zu Hilfe gerufen! Gleich greifen sie an!«
Therefore they arose and fled in the twilight, and left their tents and their horses and their donkeys, even the camp just as it was, and fled for their life.
Hals über Kopf hatten die Syrer in der Abenddämmerung die Flucht ergriffen. Ihre Zelte, die Pferde und Esel, ihr ganzes Hab und Gut — alles hatten sie zurückgelassen und waren um ihr Leben gerannt.
When these lepers came to the outskirts of the camp, they entered one tent and ate and drank, and carried from there silver and gold and clothes, and went and hid them; and they returned and entered another tent and carried from there also, and went and hid them.
Als nun die vier aussätzigen Männer ins Lager kamen, gingen sie in eines der Zelte, aßen sich erst einmal satt und stillten ihren Durst. Dann rafften sie alles an Silber, Gold und Kleidern zusammen, was sie dort im Zelt finden konnten, und versteckten die Schätze außerhalb des Lagers. Schnell eilten sie zurück, gingen in das nächste Zelt und nahmen auch von dort alles mit, was sie an Kostbarem finden konnten, um es in ihr Versteck zu bringen.
Then they said to one another, “We are not doing right. This day is a day of good news, but we are keeping silent; if we wait until morning light, punishment will overtake us. Now therefore come, let us go and tell the king’s household.”
Doch dann sagten sie zueinander: »Eigentlich ist es nicht recht, was wir hier tun. Heute ist ein Freudentag! Wir haben eine so gute Nachricht für die Leute in der Stadt und behalten sie für uns. Wenn wir unsere Entdeckung erst morgen früh melden, machen wir uns schuldig. Kommt, lasst uns zurückgehen und im Königspalast alles berichten!«
So they came and called to the gatekeepers of the city, and they told them, saying, “We came to the camp of the Arameans, and behold, there was no one there, nor the voice of man, only the horses tied and the donkeys tied, and the tents just as they were.”
Die vier eilten zur Stadt zurück, machten die Torwächter durch lautes Rufen auf sich aufmerksam und erzählten ihnen, wie sie ins syrische Heerlager gekommen waren, aber dort keinen Menschen angetroffen hatten: »Wir sahen und hörten niemanden; Pferde und Esel waren an ihren Pfosten angebunden, und in den Zelten lagen noch alle Habseligkeiten der Syrer herum.«
The gatekeepers called and told it within the king’s household.
Die Torwächter verbreiteten die Nachricht sofort in der ganzen Stadt, und auch im Königspalast wurde sie gemeldet.
Then the king arose in the night and said to his servants, “I will now tell you what the Arameans have done to us. They know that we are hungry; therefore they have gone from the camp to hide themselves in the field, saying, ‘When they come out of the city, we will capture them alive and get into the city.’”
Obwohl es mitten in der Nacht war, stand König Joram auf und ließ seine Berater zu sich kommen. »Ich kann euch sagen, was die Syrer vorhaben«, begann der König. »Sie haben längst gemerkt, dass wir am Verhungern sind. Nun haben sie sich aus dem Lager zurückgezogen und sich in einem Hinterhalt versteckt. Sobald wir aus der Stadt herauskommen, wollen sie uns alle gefangen nehmen, um dann mühelos die Stadt zu erobern.«
One of his servants said, “Please, let some men take five of the horses which remain, which are left in the city. Behold, they will be in any case like all the multitude of Israel who are left in it; behold, they will be in any case like all the multitude of Israel who have already perished, so let us send and see.”
Da schlug einer der Berater vor: »Wir könnten doch fünf unserer letzten Pferde anspannen und in das Lager der Syrer fahren! Wir haben ja ohnehin nichts zu verlieren. Irgendwann werden die Tiere sterben, und auch wir halten nicht mehr lange durch. Lasst uns hinausfahren! Dann wollen wir einmal sehen, was geschieht!«
They took therefore two chariots with horses, and the king sent after the army of the Arameans, saying, “Go and see.”
Die Pferde wurden vor zwei Streitwagen gespannt. Der König gab den Wagenlenkern den Auftrag, das Versteck der Syrer aufzuspüren.
The Promise Fulfilled
They went after them to the Jordan, and behold, all the way was full of clothes and equipment which the Arameans had thrown away in their haste. Then the messengers returned and told the king.
Die Kundschafter machten sich auf und folgten dem Weg, den das Heer genommen haben musste. Sie sahen überall Kleider und Waffen herumliegen, die die Syrer weggeworfen hatten, um schneller fliehen zu können. Beim Jordan kehrten sie um, eilten nach Samaria zurück und berichteten dem König, was sie gesehen hatten.
So the people went out and plundered the camp of the Arameans. Then a measure of fine flour was sold for a shekel and two measures of barley for a shekel, according to the word of the LORD.
Da strömten die Einwohner der Stadt in das verlassene Lager hinaus und plünderten es. Und was der HERR angekündigt hatte, das traf nun ein: Für ein Silberstück bekam man 5 Kilogramm feines Weizenmehl oder sogar 10 Kilogramm Gerste!
Now the king appointed the royal officer on whose hand he leaned to have charge of the gate; but the people trampled on him at the gate, and he died just as the man of God had said, who spoke when the king came down to him.
Der König hatte den hohen Offizier, mit dem er am Tag zuvor zu Elisa gegangen war, zum Stadttor geschickt, um dort für Ordnung zu sorgen. Doch die aufgeregte Volksmenge trampelte ihn zu Tode. So traf ein, was der Prophet vorausgesagt hatte, als der König und sein Begleiter bei ihm waren.
It happened just as the man of God had spoken to the king, saying, “Two measures of barley for a shekel and a measure of fine flour for a shekel, will be sold tomorrow about this time at the gate of Samaria.”
Elisa hatte ja zum König gesagt, dass man am folgenden Tag beim Stadttor für ein einziges Silberstück 5 Kilogramm feines Weizenmehl oder sogar 10 Kilogramm Gerste kaufen könnte.
Then the royal officer answered the man of God and said, “Now behold, if the LORD should make windows in heaven, could such a thing be?” And he said, “Behold, you will see it with your own eyes, but you will not eat of it.”
Darauf hatte der Offizier spöttisch geantwortet: »Das ist unmöglich! Sollte der HERR etwa am Himmel ein Fenster öffnen und Getreide herunterschütten?« Da hatte der Prophet ihm erwidert: »Mit eigenen Augen wirst du es sehen, aber essen wirst du nichts davon!«
