Adversaries Hinder the Work
Now when the enemies of Judah and Benjamin heard that the people of the exile were building a temple to the LORD God of Israel,

Da aber die Widersacher Juda’s und Benjamins hörten, daß die Kinder der Gefangenschaft dem HERRN, dem Gott Israels, den Tempel bauten,
they approached Zerubbabel and the heads of fathers’ households, and said to them, “Let us build with you, for we, like you, seek your God; and we have been sacrificing to Him since the days of Esarhaddon king of Assyria, who brought us up here.”
kamen sie zu Serubabel und zu den Obersten der Vaterhäuser und sprachen zu ihnen: Wir wollen mit euch bauen; denn wir suchen euren Gott gleichwie ihr, und wir haben ihm geopfert, seit der Zeit da Asar–Haddon, der König von Assyrien, uns hat heraufgebracht.
But Zerubbabel and Jeshua and the rest of the heads of fathers’ households of Israel said to them, “You have nothing in common with us in building a house to our God; but we ourselves will together build to the LORD God of Israel, as King Cyrus, the king of Persia has commanded us.”
Aber Serubabel und Jesua und die andern Obersten der Vaterhäuser in Israel antworteten ihnen: Es ziemt sich nicht, uns und euch, das Haus unsers Gottes zu bauen; sondern wir wollen allein bauen dem HERRN, dem Gott Israels, wie uns Kores, der König in Persien, geboten hat.
Then the people of the land discouraged the people of Judah, and frightened them from building,
Da hinderte das Volk im Lande die Hand des Volkes Juda und schreckten sie ab im Bauen
and hired counselors against them to frustrate their counsel all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.
und dingten Ratgeber wider sie und verhinderten ihren Rat, solange Kores, der König in Persien, lebte, bis an das Königreich des Darius, des Königs in Persien.
Now in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, they wrote an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.
Und da Ahasveros König ward, im Anfang seines Königreichs, schrieben sie eine Anklage wider die von Juda und Jerusalem.
And in the days of Artaxerxes, Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel and the rest of his colleagues wrote to Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the text of the letter was written in Aramaic and translated from Aramaic.
Und zu den Zeiten Arthahsasthas schrieb Bislam, Mithredath, Tabeel und die andern ihres Rats an Arthahsastha, den König in Persien. Die Schrift aber des Briefes war syrisch, und er war auf syrisch verdolmetscht.
The Letter to King Artaxerxes
Rehum the commander and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to King Artaxerxes, as follows —
Rehum, der Kanzler, und Simsai, der Schreiber, schrieben diesen Brief wider Jerusalem an Arthahsastha, den König:
then wrote Rehum the commander and Shimshai the scribe and the rest of their colleagues, the judges and the lesser governors, the officials, the secretaries, the men of Erech, the Babylonians, the men of Susa, that is, the Elamites,
Wir, Rehum, der Kanzler, und Simsai, der Schreiber, und die andern des Rats: die von Dina, von Apharsach, von Tarpal, von Persien, von Erech, von Babel, von Susan, von Deha und von Elam,
and the rest of the nations which the great and honorable Osnappar deported and settled in the city of Samaria, and in the rest of the region beyond the River. Now
und die andern Völker, welche der große und berühmte Asnaphar herübergebracht und gesetzt hat in die Stadt Samaria und in die andern Orte diesseit des Wassers, und so fort.
this is the copy of the letter which they sent to him:
“To King Artaxerxes: Your servants, the men in the region beyond the River, and now
“To King Artaxerxes: Your servants, the men in the region beyond the River, and now
Und dies ist der Inhalt des Briefes, den sie dem König Arthahsastha sandten: Deine Knechte, die Männer diesseit des Wassers, und so fort.
let it be known to the king that the Jews who came up from you have come to us at Jerusalem; they are rebuilding the rebellious and evil city and are finishing the walls and repairing the foundations.
Es sei kund dem König, daß die Juden, die von dir zu uns heraufgekommen sind gen Jerusalem, in die aufrührerische und böse Stadt, bauen sie und machen ihre Mauern und führen sie aus dem Grunde.
“Now let it be known to the king, that if that city is rebuilt and the walls are finished, they will not pay tribute, custom or toll, and it will damage the revenue of the kings.
So sei nun dem König kund: Wo diese Stadt gebaut wird und die Mauern wieder gemacht, so werden sie Schoß, Zoll und jährliche Zinse nicht geben, und ihr Vornehmen wird den Königen Schaden bringen.
“Now because we are in the service of the palace, and it is not fitting for us to see the king’s dishonor, therefore we have sent and informed the king,
Nun wir aber das Salz des Königshauses essen und die Schmach des Königs nicht länger wollen sehen, darum schicken wir hin und lassen’s dem König zu wissen tun,
so that a search may be made in the record books of your fathers. And you will discover in the record books and learn that that city is a rebellious city and damaging to kings and provinces, and that they have incited revolt within it in past days; therefore that city was laid waste.
daß man lasse suchen in den Chroniken deiner Väter; so wirst du finden in denselben Chroniken und erfahren, daß diese Stadt aufrührerisch und schädlich ist den Königen und Landen und macht, daß andere auch abfallen, von alters her; darum die Stadt auch zerstört ist.
“We inform the king that if that city is rebuilt and the walls finished, as a result you will have no possession in the province beyond the River.”
Darum tun wir dem König zu wissen, daß, wo diese Stadt gebaut wird und ihre Mauern gemacht, so wirst du vor ihr nichts behalten diesseit des Wassers.
The King Replies and Work Stops
Then the king sent an answer to Rehum the commander, to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their colleagues who live in Samaria and in the rest of the provinces beyond the River: “Peace. And now
Da sandte der König eine Antwort an Rehum, den Kanzler, und Simsai, den Schreiber, und die andern ihres Rats, die in Samaria wohnten und in den andern Orten jenseit des Wassers: Friede und Gruß!
the document which you sent to us has been translated and read before me.
Der Brief, den ihr uns zugeschickt habt, ist deutlich von mir gelesen.
“A decree has been issued by me, and a search has been made and it has been discovered that that city has risen up against the kings in past days, that rebellion and revolt have been perpetrated in it,
Und ist von mir befohlen, daß man suchen sollte. Und man hat gefunden, daß diese Stadt von alters her wider die Könige sich empört hat und Aufruhr und Abfall darin geschieht.
that mighty kings have ruled over Jerusalem, governing all the provinces beyond the River, and that tribute, custom and toll were paid to them.
Auch sind mächtige Könige zu Jerusalem gewesen, die geherrscht haben über alles, was jenseit des Wassers ist, daß ihnen Zoll, Schoß und jährliche Zinse gegeben wurden.
“So, now issue a decree to make these men stop work, that this city may not be rebuilt until a decree is issued by me.
So tut nun nach diesem Befehl: Wehret denselben Männern, daß die Stadt nicht gebaut werde, bis daß von mir der Befehl gegeben werde!
“Beware of being negligent in carrying out this matter; why should damage increase to the detriment of the kings?”
So sehet nun zu, daß ihr nicht lässig hierin seid, damit nicht größerer Schade entstehe dem König!
Then as soon as the copy of King Artaxerxes’ document was read before Rehum and Shimshai the scribe and their colleagues, they went in haste to Jerusalem to the Jews and stopped them by force of arms.
Da nun der Brief des Königs Arthahsastha gelesen ward vor Rehum und Simsai, dem Schreiber, und ihrem Rat, zogen sie eilend hinauf gen Jerusalem zu den Juden und wehrten ihnen mit Arm und Gewalt.
