An jenem Tag las man dem Volk aus dem Buch des Mose vor; da fand man die Stelle, an der steht: In die Versammlung Gottes darf niemals ein Ammoniter oder Moabiter kommen;
because they did not meet the sons of Israel with bread and water, but hired Balaam against them to curse them. However, our God turned the curse into a blessing.
denn sie sind den Israeliten einst nicht mit Brot und Wasser entgegengegangen. Moab hat gegen sie Bileam gedungen, der sie verfluchen sollte. Doch unser Gott verwandelte den Fluch in einen Segen.
So when they heard the law, they excluded all foreigners from Israel.
Als man diese Weisung gehört hatte, sonderte man aus Israel alle Mischvölker aus.
Tobiah Expelled and the Temple Cleansed
Now prior to this, Eliashib the priest, who was appointed over the chambers of the house of our God, being related to Tobiah,

had prepared a large room for him, where formerly they put the grain offerings, the frankincense, the utensils and the tithes of grain, wine and oil prescribed for the Levites, the singers and the gatekeepers, and the contributions for the priests.
und hatte darum für ihn eine große Kammer einrichten lassen. Dort bewahrte man früher das Opfermehl und den Weihrauch auf sowie die Behälter und den Zehnten von Getreide, Wein und Öl, der den Leviten, Sängern und Torwächtern nach dem Gebot zukam, außerdem die Abgaben für die Priester.
But during all this time I was not in Jerusalem, for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I had gone to the king. After some time, however, I asked leave from the king,
Bei alldem war ich aber nicht in Jerusalem gewesen; denn im zweiunddreißigsten Jahr des Artaxerxes, des Königs von Babel, war ich zum König gereist. Nach einiger Zeit erbat ich aber vom König meine Freistellung
and I came to Jerusalem and learned about the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, by preparing a room for him in the courts of the house of God.
und kam wieder nach Jerusalem. Nun bemerkte ich die Untat, die Eljaschib zugunsten Tobijas begangen hatte, indem er ihm in den Vorhöfen des Hauses Gottes eine Kammer eingerichtet hatte.
It was very displeasing to me, so I threw all of Tobiah’s household goods out of the room.
Das missfiel mir sehr und ich warf den ganzen Hausrat Tobijas aus der Kammer hinaus.
Then I gave an order and they cleansed the rooms; and I returned there the utensils of the house of God with the grain offerings and the frankincense.
Dann ließ ich die Kammern reinigen und brachte die Behälter des Hauses Gottes, das Opfermehl und den Weihrauch wieder dorthin.
Tithes Restored
I also discovered that the portions of the Levites had not been given them, so that the Levites and the singers who performed the service had gone away, each to his own field.
Ich erfuhr auch, dass die Anteile der Leviten nicht abgeliefert wurden; darum waren die Leviten und die Sänger, die den Dienst zu versehen hatten, weggegangen, jeder auf seinen Landbesitz.
So I reprimanded the officials and said, “Why is the house of God forsaken?” Then I gathered them together and restored them to their posts.
Da machte ich den Beamten Vorwürfe und sagte: Warum wird das Haus Gottes im Stich gelassen? Und ich holte die Leviten wieder zusammen und stellte sie auf ihren Posten.
All Judah then brought the tithe of the grain, wine and oil into the storehouses.
Nun brachte ganz Juda wieder den Zehnten von Getreide, Wein und Öl zu den Vorratskammern.
In charge of the storehouses I appointed Shelemiah the priest, Zadok the scribe, and Pedaiah of the Levites, and in addition to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah; for they were considered reliable, and it was their task to distribute to their kinsmen.
Zur Aufsicht über die Vorratskammern bestimmte ich den Priester Schelemja, den Schreiber Zadok und den Leviten Pedaja. Ihnen stellte ich Hanan, den Sohn Sakkurs, des Sohnes Mattanjas, an die Seite, denn sie galten als zuverlässig. Ihnen oblag die Verteilung an ihre Brüder.
Remember me for this, O my God, and do not blot out my loyal deeds which I have performed for the house of my God and its services.
Denk dafür an mich, mein Gott, und lösch die guten Taten nicht aus, die ich für das Haus meines Gottes und seine Ordnung vollbracht habe!
Sabbath Restored
In those days I saw in Judah some who were treading wine presses on the sabbath, and bringing in sacks of grain and loading them on donkeys, as well as wine, grapes, figs and all kinds of loads, and they brought them into Jerusalem on the sabbath day. So I admonished them on the day they sold food.
Damals sah ich in Juda Leute, die am Sabbat die Kelter traten. Andere brachten Getreide ein und luden es auf Esel; auch Wein, Trauben, Feigen und Lasten aller Art brachten sie am Sabbattag nach Jerusalem. Ich verwarnte sie, weil sie an diesem Tag Lebensmittel verkauften.
Also men of Tyre were living there who imported fish and all kinds of merchandise, and sold them to the sons of Judah on the sabbath, even in Jerusalem.
Die Leute von Tyrus, die in Juda wohnten, brachten Fische und allerlei Waren und verkauften sie am Sabbat an die Juden, sogar in Jerusalem.
Then I reprimanded the nobles of Judah and said to them, “What is this evil thing you are doing, by profaning the sabbath day?
Da machte ich den Vornehmen von Juda Vorwürfe und sagte zu ihnen: Wie könnt ihr eine solche Untat begehen und den Sabbat entweihen?
“Did not your fathers do the same, so that our God brought on us and on this city all this trouble? Yet you are adding to the wrath on Israel by profaning the sabbath.”
Haben das nicht schon eure Väter getan? Dafür ließ unser Gott all dieses Unheil über uns und diese Stadt kommen. Wollt ihr neuen Zorn über Israel bringen, indem ihr den Sabbat entweiht?
It came about that just as it grew dark at the gates of Jerusalem before the sabbath, I commanded that the doors should be shut and that they should not open them until after the sabbath. Then I stationed some of my servants at the gates so that no load would enter on the sabbath day.
Ich ließ von da an vor dem Anbruch des Sabbats, wenn es in den Toren Jerusalems dunkel wurde, die Tore schließen und befahl, sie erst nach dem Sabbat wieder zu öffnen. Auch stellte ich einige meiner Leute an die Tore, damit am Sabbattag keine Lasten hereingebracht wurden.
Once or twice the traders and merchants of every kind of merchandise spent the night outside Jerusalem.
Einmal und ein zweites Mal übernachteten die Händler und die Verkäufer von allerlei Waren draußen vor Jerusalem.
Then I warned them and said to them, “Why do you spend the night in front of the wall? If you do so again, I will use force against you.” From that time on they did not come on the sabbath.
Da warnte ich sie und sagte zu ihnen: Wozu übernachtet ihr gerade vor der Mauer? Wenn ihr es noch einmal tut, lasse ich euch festnehmen. Von da an kamen sie nicht mehr am Sabbat.
And I commanded the Levites that they should purify themselves and come as gatekeepers to sanctify the sabbath day. For this also remember me, O my God, and have compassion on me according to the greatness of Your lovingkindness.
Den Leviten aber befahl ich, sie sollten sich reinigen und sich als Wächter an die Tore stellen, damit man den Sabbattag heilighalte. Auch dafür denk an mich, mein Gott, und sei mir gnädig in deiner großen Huld!
Mixed Marriages Forbidden
In those days I also saw that the Jews had married women from Ashdod, Ammon and Moab.
Damals sah ich auch Juden, die Frauen von Aschdod, Ammon und Moab geheiratet hatten.
As for their children, half spoke in the language of Ashdod, and none of them was able to speak the language of Judah, but the language of his own people.
Die Hälfte ihrer Kinder redete in der Sprache von Aschdod oder in der Sprache eines der anderen Völker, konnten aber nicht mehr Jüdisch.
So I contended with them and cursed them and struck some of them and pulled out their hair, and made them swear by God, “You shall not give your daughters to their sons, nor take of their daughters for your sons or for yourselves.
Ich machte ihnen Vorwürfe und verfluchte sie. Einige von ihnen schlug ich und packte sie bei den Haaren. Ich beschwor sie bei Gott: Ihr dürft eure Töchter nicht ihren Söhnen geben noch ihre Töchter zu Frauen für eure Söhne oder für euch selbst nehmen.
“Did not Solomon king of Israel sin regarding these things? Yet among the many nations there was no king like him, and he was loved by his God, and God made him king over all Israel; nevertheless the foreign women caused even him to sin.
Hat sich nicht wegen solcher Frauen Salomo, der König Israels, versündigt? Unter den vielen Völkern gab es keinen König wie ihn. Er wurde von seinem Gott geliebt; darum hatte ihn Gott zum König über ganz Israel gemacht. Aber selbst ihn haben die fremden Frauen zur Sünde verführt.
“Do we then hear about you that you have committed all this great evil by acting unfaithfully against our God by marrying foreign women?”
Und jetzt hört man von euch, dass ihr genau dieselbe Untat begeht und unserem Gott die Treue brecht, indem ihr fremde Frauen heiratet.
Even one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was a son-in-law of Sanballat the Horonite, so I drove him away from me.
Einer der Söhne des Hohepriesters Jojada, des Sohnes Eljaschibs, war der Schwiegersohn des Horoniters Sanballat; ihn verwies ich aus meinem Gebiet.
Remember them, O my God, because they have defiled the priesthood and the covenant of the priesthood and the Levites.
Vergiss es ihnen nicht, mein Gott, dass sie das Priestertum und den Bund der Priester und Leviten befleckt haben!
Thus I purified them from everything foreign and appointed duties for the priests and the Levites, each in his task,
So habe ich sie von allem gereinigt, was fremd war, und habe Ordnungen aufgestellt für die Priester und Leviten, die jedem seinen Dienst zuteilen.
