Nehemiah’s Prayer Answered
And it came about in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, that wine was before him, and I took up the wine and gave it to the king. Now I had not been sad in his presence.

Es geschah im Monat Nisan, im zwanzigsten Jahr des Königs Artaxerxes: Als Wein vor ihm stand, nahm ich den Wein und reichte ihn dem König. Nie zuvor hatte der König mein Aussehen schlecht gefunden;
So the king said to me, “Why is your face sad though you are not sick? This is nothing but sadness of heart.” Then I was very much afraid.
jetzt aber fragte er mich: Warum siehst du so schlecht aus? Du bist doch nicht etwa krank? Nein, du hast gewiss Kummer. Ich erschrak sehr;
I said to the king, “Let the king live forever. Why should my face not be sad when the city, the place of my fathers’ tombs, lies desolate and its gates have been consumed by fire?”
dann sagte ich zum König: Der König möge ewig leben. Wie sollte ich nicht schlecht aussehen? Die Stadt, in der die Gräber meiner Väter sind, liegt in Trümmern und ihre Tore sind vom Feuer verzehrt.
Then the king said to me, “What would you request?” So I prayed to the God of heaven.
Der König erwiderte: Was möchtest du also? Da betete ich zum Gott des Himmels;
I said to the king, “If it please the king, and if your servant has found favor before you, send me to Judah, to the city of my fathers’ tombs, that I may rebuild it.”
dann sagte ich zum König: Wenn du, König, es für gut findest und wenn du deinem Knecht vertraust, so sende mich nach Juda in die Stadt, in der die Gräber meiner Väter sind, damit ich sie wieder aufbaue.
Then the king said to me, the queen sitting beside him, “How long will your journey be, and when will you return?” So it pleased the king to send me, and I gave him a definite time.
Darauf fragte mich der König, während die Königin neben ihm saß: Wie lang soll deine Reise dauern? Wann kommst du zurück? Ich nannte ihm eine bestimmte Zeit; der König war einverstanden und ließ mich ziehen.
And I said to the king, “If it please the king, let letters be given me for the governors of the provinces beyond the River, that they may allow me to pass through until I come to Judah,
Ich sagte dem König noch: Wenn der König es für gut findet, dann gebe man mir Briefe mit an die Statthalter des Gebiets jenseits des Stroms, damit sie mich bis nach Juda durchreisen lassen;
and a letter to Asaph the keeper of the king’s forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the fortress which is by the temple, for the wall of the city and for the house to which I will go.” And the king granted them to me because the good hand of my God was on me.
ferner einen Brief an Asaf, den Verwalter der königlichen Wälder: Er soll mir Bauholz liefern für die Tore der Tempelburg, für die Stadtmauer und für das Haus, in das ich ziehen will. Der König bewilligte es mir, weil die gütige Hand meines Gottes über mir war.
Then I came to the governors of the provinces beyond the River and gave them the king’s letters. Now the king had sent with me officers of the army and horsemen.
So kam ich zu den Statthaltern im Gebiet jenseits des Stroms und ich übergab ihnen die Briefe des Königs. Der König hatte mir auch Hauptleute und Reiter als Geleit gegeben.
When Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite official heard about it, it was very displeasing to them that someone had come to seek the welfare of the sons of Israel.
Sanballat, der Horoniter, und Tobija, der Knecht von Ammon, hörten davon. Es verdross sie sehr, dass da ein Mann kam, der sich für das Wohl der Israeliten einsetzte.
Nehemiah Inspects Jerusalem’s Walls
So I came to Jerusalem and was there three days.
So kam ich nach Jerusalem. Dort blieb ich drei Tage.
And I arose in the night, I and a few men with me. I did not tell anyone what my God was putting into my mind to do for Jerusalem and there was no animal with me except the animal on which I was riding.
Dann machte ich mich bei Nacht auf, nahm aber nur einige wenige Männer mit. Noch hatte ich keinem Menschen mitgeteilt, was mein Gott mir eingegeben hatte, für Jerusalem zu tun. Ich nahm keine Tiere mit außer dem einen, auf dem ich ritt.
So I went out at night by the Valley Gate in the direction of the Dragon’s Well and on to the Refuse Gate, inspecting the walls of Jerusalem which were broken down and its gates which were consumed by fire.
So ritt ich bei Nacht zum Taltor hinaus. An der Drachenquelle vorbei gelangte ich zum Aschentor. Dabei besichtigte ich die Mauern Jerusalems: Sie waren niedergerissen und die Tore vom Feuer verzehrt.
Then I passed on to the Fountain Gate and the King’s Pool, but there was no place for my mount to pass.
Ich ritt zum Quelltor und zum Königsteich hinüber. Hier konnte ich mit dem Reittier nicht mehr vorwärtskommen.
So I went up at night by the ravine and inspected the wall. Then I entered the Valley Gate again and returned.
So ging ich bei Nacht das Bachtal hinauf und besichtigte die Mauer. Dann kehrte ich um und kam durch das Taltor wieder zurück.
The officials did not know where I had gone or what I had done; nor had I as yet told the Jews, the priests, the nobles, the officials or the rest who did the work.
Die Beamten wussten nicht, wohin ich gegangen war und was ich vorhatte. Denn ich hatte bis dahin den Juden nichts mitgeteilt, weder den Priestern noch den Vornehmen, noch den Beamten und den Übrigen, die an dem Werk mitwirken sollten.
Then I said to them, “You see the bad situation we are in, that Jerusalem is desolate and its gates burned by fire. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem so that we will no longer be a reproach.”
Jetzt aber sagte ich zu ihnen: Ihr seht selbst, in welchem Elend wir sind: Jerusalem liegt in Trümmern und seine Tore sind im Feuer verbrannt. Gehen wir daran und bauen wir die Mauer Jerusalems wieder auf! So machen wir unserer Schande ein Ende.
I told them how the hand of my God had been favorable to me and also about the king’s words which he had spoken to me. Then they said, “Let us arise and build.” So they put their hands to the good work.
Dann berichtete ich ihnen, wie die Hand meines Gottes so gütig über mir gewesen war und was der König mir zugesagt hatte. Da sagten sie: Wir wollen ans Werk gehen und bauen. Und sie nahmen die gute Sache in die Hand.
But when Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite official, and Geshem the Arab heard it, they mocked us and despised us and said, “What is this thing you are doing? Are you rebelling against the king?”
Als aber Sanballat, der Horoniter, Tobija, der Knecht von Ammon, und der Araber Geschem davon hörten, verspotteten sie uns und sagten verächtlich: Was soll das, was ihr da macht? Wollt ihr euch etwa gegen den König auflehnen?
So I answered them and said to them, “The God of heaven will give us success; therefore we His servants will arise and build, but you have no portion, right or memorial in Jerusalem.”
Ich ließ ihnen antworten: Der Gott des Himmels wird uns Erfolg verleihen. Wir, seine Knechte, wollen ans Werk gehen und bauen. Ihr hingegen habt weder Anteil noch Anrecht noch gibt es Erinnerung an euch in Jerusalem.
