New American Standard Bible

New King James Version

  • Elihu Says God Is Back of the Storm

    “At this also my heart trembles,
    And leaps from its place.
  • God’s Works and Wisdom

    “At this also my heart trembles,
    And leaps from its place.
  • “Listen closely to the thunder of His voice,
    And the rumbling that goes out from His mouth.
  • Hear attentively the thunder of His voice,
    And the rumbling that comes from His mouth.
  • “Under the whole heaven He lets it loose,
    And His lightning to the ends of the earth.
  • He sends it forth under the whole heaven,
    His [a]lightning to the ends of the earth.
  • “After it, a voice roars;
    He thunders with His majestic voice,
    And He does not restrain the lightnings when His voice is heard.
  • After it a voice roars;
    He thunders with His majestic voice,
    And He does not restrain them when His voice is heard.
  • “God thunders with His voice wondrously,
    Doing great things which we cannot comprehend.
  • God thunders marvelously with His voice;
    He does great things which we cannot comprehend.
  • “For to the snow He says, ‘Fall on the earth,’
    And to the downpour and the rain, ‘Be strong.’
  • For He says to the snow, ‘Fall on the earth’;
    Likewise to the [b]gentle rain and the heavy rain of His strength.
  • “He seals the hand of every man,
    That all men may know His work.
  • He seals the hand of every man,
    That all men may know His work.
  • “Then the beast goes into its lair
    And remains in its den.
  • The beasts go into dens,
    And remain in their lairs.
  • “Out of the south comes the storm,
    And out of the north the cold.
  • From the chamber of the south comes the whirlwind,
    And cold from the scattering winds of the north.
  • “From the breath of God ice is made,
    And the expanse of the waters is frozen.
  • By the breath of God ice is given,
    And the broad waters are frozen.
  • “Also with moisture He loads the thick cloud;
    He disperses the cloud of His lightning.
  • Also with moisture He saturates the thick clouds;
    He scatters His [c]bright clouds.
  • “It changes direction, turning around by His guidance,
    That it may do whatever He commands it
    On the face of the inhabited earth.
  • And they swirl about, being turned by His guidance,
    That they may do whatever He commands them
    On the face of [d]the whole earth.
  • “Whether for correction, or for His world,
    Or for lovingkindness, He causes it to happen.
  • He causes it to come,
    Whether for [e]correction,
    Or for His land,
    Or for mercy.
  • “Listen to this, O Job,
    Stand and consider the wonders of God.
  • “Listen to this, O Job;
    Stand still and consider the wondrous works of God.
  • “Do you know how God establishes them,
    And makes the lightning of His cloud to shine?
  • Do you know when God [f]dispatches them,
    And causes the light of His cloud to shine?
  • “Do you know about the layers of the thick clouds,
    The wonders of one perfect in knowledge,
  • Do you know how the clouds are balanced,
    Those wondrous works of Him who is perfect in knowledge?
  • You whose garments are hot,
    When the land is still because of the south wind?
  • Why are your garments hot,
    When He quiets the earth by the south wind?
  • “Can you, with Him, spread out the skies,
    Strong as a molten mirror?
  • With Him, have you spread out the skies,
    Strong as a cast metal mirror?
  • “Teach us what we shall say to Him;
    We cannot arrange our case because of darkness.
  • “Teach us what we should say to Him,
    For we can prepare nothing because of the darkness.
  • “Shall it be told Him that I would speak?
    Or should a man say that he would be swallowed up?
  • Should He be told that I wish to speak?
    If a man were to speak, surely he would be swallowed up.
  • “Now men do not see the light which is bright in the skies;
    But the wind has passed and cleared them.
  • Even now men cannot look at the light when it is bright in the skies,
    When the wind has passed and cleared them.
  • “Out of the north comes golden splendor;
    Around God is awesome majesty.
  • He comes from the north as golden splendor;
    With God is awesome majesty.
  • “The Almighty — we cannot find Him;
    He is exalted in power
    And He will not do violence to justice and abundant righteousness.
  • As for the Almighty, we cannot find Him;
    He is excellent in power,
    In judgment and abundant justice;
    He does not oppress.
  • “Therefore men fear Him;
    He does not regard any who are wise of heart.”
  • Therefore men fear Him;
    He shows no partiality to any who are wise of heart.”
