The Evils of Oppression
Then I looked again at all the acts of oppression which were being done under the sun. And behold I saw the tears of the oppressed and that they had no one to comfort them; and on the side of their oppressors was power, but they had no one to comfort them.

Dann wieder habe ich alles beobachtet, was unter der Sonne getan wird, um Menschen auszubeuten. Sieh, die Ausgebeuteten weinen und niemand tröstet sie; von der Hand ihrer Ausbeuter geht Gewalt aus und niemand tröstet sie.
So I congratulated the dead who are already dead more than the living who are still living.
Da preise ich immer wieder die Toten, die schon gestorben sind, und nicht die Lebenden, die noch leben müssen.
But better off than both of them is the one who has never existed, who has never seen the evil activity that is done under the sun.
Glücklicher aber als beide preise ich den, der noch nicht geworden ist, der noch nicht das schlimme Tun gesehen hat, das unter der Sonne getan wurde.
I have seen that every labor and every skill which is done is the result of rivalry between a man and his neighbor. This too is vanity and striving after wind.
Denn ich beobachtete: Jede Arbeit und jedes erfolgreiche Tun bedeutet Konkurrenzkampf zwischen den Menschen. Auch das ist Windhauch und Luftgespinst.
The fool folds his hands and consumes his own flesh.
Der Ungebildete legt seine Hände in den Schoß und verzehrt sein eigenes Fleisch.
One hand full of rest is better than two fists full of labor and striving after wind.
Besser eine Handvoll und Ruhe als beide Hände voll und Arbeit und Luftgespinst.
Then I looked again at vanity under the sun.
Und wieder habe ich etwas unter der Sonne beobachtet, das Windhauch ist.
There was a certain man without a dependent, having neither a son nor a brother, yet there was no end to all his labor. Indeed, his eyes were not satisfied with riches and he never asked, “And for whom am I laboring and depriving myself of pleasure?” This too is vanity and it is a grievous task.
Es kommt vor, dass jemand allein steht und niemanden bei sich hat. Ja, er besitzt nicht einmal einen Sohn oder Bruder. Aber sein Besitz ist ohne Grenzen und überdies kann sein Auge vom Reichtum nicht genug bekommen. Doch für wen strenge ich mich dann an und warum gönne ich mir kein Glück? Auch das ist Windhauch und ein schlechtes Geschäft.
Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor.
Zwei sind besser als einer allein, falls sie nur reichen Ertrag aus ihrem Besitz ziehen.
For if either of them falls, the one will lift up his companion. But woe to the one who falls when there is not another to lift him up.
Denn wenn sie hinfallen, richtet einer den anderen auf. Doch wehe dem, der allein ist, wenn er hinfällt, ohne dass einer bei ihm ist, der ihn aufrichtet.
Furthermore, if two lie down together they keep warm, but how can one be warm alone?
Außerdem: Wenn zwei zusammen schlafen, wärmt einer den andern; einer allein — wie soll er warm werden?
And if one can overpower him who is alone, two can resist him. A cord of three strands is not quickly torn apart.
Und wenn jemand einen Einzelnen auch überwältigt, zwei sind ihm gewachsen und eine dreifache Schnur reißt nicht so schnell.
A poor yet wise lad is better than an old and foolish king who no longer knows how to receive instruction.
Besser ein junger Mann, der niedriger Herkunft, aber gebildet ist, als ein König, der alt, aber ungebildet ist — weil er es nicht mehr verstand, auf Ratschläge zu hören.
For he has come out of prison to become king, even though he was born poor in his kingdom.
Der junge Mann wurde aus dem Gefängnis befreit und wurde König, obwohl er, während der andere schon regierte, arm zur Welt gekommen war.
I have seen all the living under the sun throng to the side of the second lad who replaces him.
Ich habe beobachtet, dass alle Lebenden, die unter der Sonne umherlaufen, sich auf die Seite des nächsten jungen Mannes stellten, der statt seiner hochkommt.
There is no end to all the people, to all who were before them, and even the ones who will come later will not be happy with him, for this too is vanity and striving after wind.
Die Volksmenge nimmt kein Ende, gleichgültig, wer an ihre Spitze getreten ist. Im Übrigen werden die Späteren auch mit ihm nicht zufrieden sein. Denn auch das ist Windhauch und Luftgespinst.
