Im 14. Regierungsjahr von König Hiskia marschierte der assyrische König Sanherib mit seinen Truppen in Juda ein und eroberte alle befestigten Städte des Landes.
And the king of Assyria sent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem to King Hezekiah with a large army. And he stood by the conduit of the upper pool on the highway of the fuller’s field.
Von der Stadt Lachisch aus schickte er einen seiner höchsten Würdenträger — er trug den Titel Rabschake — mit einem starken Heer nach Jerusalem. Dort stellte sich das Heer bei der Wasserleitung des oberen Teiches auf. Sie liegt an der Straße zu dem Feld, auf dem die Tuchmacher ihre Stoffe bleichen.
Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph, the recorder, came out to him.
Hiskia schickte drei seiner Hofbeamten zu ihnen hinaus: den Palastverwalter Eljakim, einen Sohn von Hilkija, den Hofsekretär Schebna und den Berater Joach, einen Sohn von Asaf.
Then Rabshakeh said to them, “Say now to Hezekiah, ‘Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria, “What is this confidence that you have?
Der Rabschake gab ihnen eine Botschaft an König Hiskia mit: »Der mächtige König von Assyrien lässt dir sagen: Worauf vertraust du eigentlich, dass du dich so sicher fühlst?
“I say, ‘Your counsel and strength for the war are only empty words.’ Now on whom do you rely, that you have rebelled against me?
Schöne Worte allein erringen keinen Sieg. Was du brauchst, sind gute Berater und ein starkes Heer. Von wem erhoffst du dir Rückendeckung, dass du es wagst, dich gegen mich aufzulehnen?
“Behold, you rely on the staff of this crushed reed, even on Egypt, on which if a man leans, it will go into his hand and pierce it. So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who rely on him.
Ausgerechnet von Ägypten erwartest du Hilfe? Auf diesen zerbrochenen Stab willst du dich stützen? Er hat noch jedem die Hand durchbohrt, der sich auf ihn stützte. So ist nämlich der Pharao: Er wird allen zum Verhängnis, die sich auf ihn verlassen!
“But if you say to me, ‘We trust in the LORD our God,’ is it not He whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah has taken away and has said to Judah and to Jerusalem, ‘You shall worship before this altar’?
Vielleicht sagt ihr jetzt: ›Wir vertrauen auf den HERRN, unseren Gott!‹ Aber hast du, Hiskia, nicht alle Altäre und Opferstätten dieses Gottes niedergerissen? Hast du nicht dem Volk in ganz Juda und Jerusalem befohlen, sich nur noch vor dem einen Altar in Jerusalem niederzuwerfen? Und da sollte dieser Gott euch nun noch helfen wollen?
“Now therefore, come make a bargain with my master the king of Assyria, and I will give you two thousand horses, if you are able on your part to set riders on them.
Der König von Assyrien bietet dir folgende Wette an: Er schenkt dir zweitausend Pferde, wenn du die Reiter dafür aufbringen kannst. Wetten, dass es dir nicht gelingt?
“How then can you repulse one official of the least of my master’s servants and rely on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?
Ihr könnt doch nicht einmal irgendeinem unbedeutenden Truppenführer meines Herrn die Stirn bieten. Ihr setzt ja eure ganze Hoffnung auf die Ägypter, weil sie viele Streitwagen und Reiter besitzen.
“Have I now come up without the LORD’S approval against this land to destroy it? The LORD said to me, ‘Go up against this land and destroy it.’”’”
Und noch etwas lässt dir der König sagen: Du denkst wohl, wir seien gegen den Willen des HERRN hier einmarschiert, um alles zu verwüsten? Dann irrst du dich aber! Der HERR selbst hat mir befohlen, dieses Land zu erobern und zu zerstören.«
Then Eliakim and Shebna and Joah said to Rabshakeh, “Speak now to your servants in Aramaic, for we understand it; and do not speak with us in Judean in the hearing of the people who are on the wall.”
Hier unterbrachen Eljakim, Schebna und Joach den Rabschake. »Bitte, rede aramäisch mit uns, Herr«, baten sie. »Sprich nicht hebräisch! Die Leute aus dem Volk oben auf der Mauer verstehen sonst jedes Wort.«
But Rabshakeh said, “Has my master sent me only to your master and to you to speak these words, and not to the men who sit on the wall, doomed to eat their own dung and drink their own urine with you?”
Doch der Rabschake erwiderte: »Meint ihr, mein Herr habe mich mit dieser Botschaft nur zu euch und eurem Herrn geschickt? Nein, gerade die Männer dort oben auf der Stadtmauer sollen es hören! Bald schon werden sie so wie ihr den eigenen Kot fressen und Harn saufen.«
Then Rabshakeh stood and cried with a loud voice in Judean and said, “Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria.
Dann wandte er sich zur Stadtmauer hin und rief laut auf Hebräisch: »Hört, was der mächtige König von Assyrien euch zu sagen hat:
“Thus says the king, ‘Do not let Hezekiah deceive you, for he will not be able to deliver you;
Lasst euch von Hiskia nicht täuschen! Der kann euch ja doch nicht helfen.
nor let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, “The LORD will surely deliver us, this city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.”
Er vertröstet euch auf den HERRN und behauptet: ›Ganz sicher wird der HERR uns retten und verhindern, dass der König von Assyrien die Stadt erobert.‹ Fallt nicht darauf herein!
‘Do not listen to Hezekiah,’ for thus says the king of Assyria, ‘Make your peace with me and come out to me, and eat each of his vine and each of his fig tree and drink each of the waters of his own cistern,
Hört nicht auf Hiskia, sondern hört auf den König von Assyrien! Er will Frieden mit euch schließen und lässt euch sagen: Ihr könnt euch mir getrost ergeben. Dann werdet ihr wieder die Früchte eurer Weinstöcke und Feigenbäume essen und das Wasser eurer Brunnen trinken,
until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards.
bis ich euch in ein Land hole, das so fruchtbar ist wie eures. Dort gibt es Getreidefelder und Weinberge, Brot und Most in Hülle und Fülle.
‘Beware that Hezekiah does not mislead you, saying, “The LORD will deliver us.” Has any one of the gods of the nations delivered his land from the hand of the king of Assyria?
Lasst euch von Hiskia nicht an der Nase herumführen, wenn er behauptet: ›Der HERR wird uns helfen!‹ Haben etwa die Götter anderer Völker sie vor mir retten können?
‘Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? And when have they delivered Samaria from my hand?
Was ist mit den Göttern von Hamat und Arpad und mit den Göttern von Sefarwajim? Konnten sie ihre Städte vor meinen Angriffen schützen? Und wie war es mit Samaria? Haben sie uns etwa dort zum Abzug gezwungen?
‘Who among all the gods of these lands have delivered their land from my hand, that the LORD would deliver Jerusalem from my hand?’”
Nein, nicht ein einziger Gott konnte sein Land vor meinen Eroberungen schützen. Und da sollte ausgerechnet euer Gott, den ihr ›HERR‹ nennt, Jerusalem vor mir bewahren?«
But they were silent and answered him not a word; for the king’s commandment was, “Do not answer him.”
Die Leute auf der Mauer blieben ruhig und antworteten ihm nichts. Hiskia hatte ihnen nämlich befohlen, kein Wort zu sagen.
Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe and Joah the son of Asaph, the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn and told him the words of Rabshakeh.
Entsetzt zerrissen Eljakim, Schebna und Joach ihre Gewänder. Sie eilten zu Hiskia und wiederholten ihm die ganze Rede des Rabschake.
