Drought and a Prayer for Mercy

“Judah mourns
And her gates languish;
They sit on the ground in mourning,
And the cry of Jerusalem has ascended.

Juda ist ausgedörrt; seine Tore verfallen, sie sinken trauernd zu Boden und Jerusalems Klageschrei steigt empor.
“Their nobles have sent their servants for water;
They have come to the cisterns and found no water.
They have returned with their vessels empty;
They have been put to shame and humiliated,
And they cover their heads.

Die Vornehmen schicken ihre Diener nach Wasser; sie kommen zu den Zisternen, finden aber kein Wasser; sie kehren mit leeren Krügen zurück. Sie sind bestürzt und enttäuscht und verhüllen ihr Haupt.
“Because the ground is cracked,
For there has been no rain on the land;
The farmers have been put to shame,
They have covered their heads.

Um den Ackerboden voller Risse sind die Bauern besorgt; denn es fiel kein Regen im Land. Sie sind bestürzt und verhüllen ihr Haupt.
“For even the doe in the field has given birth only to abandon her young,
Because there is no grass.
Because there is no grass.
Die Hirschkuh gebiert auf dem Feld und lässt ihr Junges im Stich, weil kein Grün mehr da ist.
“The wild donkeys stand on the bare heights;
They pant for air like jackals,
Their eyes fail
For there is no vegetation.

Die Wildesel stehen auf den kahlen Höhen; sie schnappen nach Luft wie Schakale. Ihre Augen erlöschen; denn nirgends ist Gras.
“Although our iniquities testify against us,
O LORD, act for Your name’s sake!
Truly our apostasies have been many,
We have sinned against You.
O LORD, act for Your name’s sake!

Wenn unsre Sünden uns anklagen, handle um deines Namens willen, o HERR! Ja, groß ist unsere Abtrünnigkeit; gegen dich haben wir gesündigt.
“O Hope of Israel,
Its Savior in time of distress,
Why are You like a stranger in the land
Or like a traveler who has pitched his tent for the night?

Du, Israels Hoffnung, sein Retter zur Zeit der Not, warum bist du wie ein Fremder im Land und wie ein Wanderer, der nur über Nacht einkehrt?
“Why are You like a man dismayed,
Like a mighty man who cannot save?
Yet You are in our midst, O LORD,
And we are called by Your name;
Do not forsake us!”

Warum bist du wie ein ratloser Mann, wie ein Held, der nicht zu retten vermag? Du bist doch in unsrer Mitte, HERR, und dein Name ist über uns ausgerufen. Verlass uns nicht!
Thus says the LORD to this people, “Even so they have loved to wander; they have not kept their feet in check. Therefore the LORD does not accept them; now He will remember their iniquity and call their sins to account.”
So spricht der HERR von diesem Volk: Hin und her zu schweifen, das lieben sie; ihren Füßen gönnen sie keine Ruhe. Doch der HERR hat kein Gefallen an ihnen. Jetzt denkt er an ihre Schuld und sucht ihre Sünden heim.
So the LORD said to me, “Do not pray for the welfare of this people.
Und der HERR sprach zu mir: Bete nicht um das Wohlergehen dieses Volkes!
“When they fast, I am not going to listen to their cry; and when they offer burnt offering and grain offering, I am not going to accept them. Rather I am going to make an end of them by the sword, famine and pestilence.”
Auch wenn sie fasten, höre ich nicht auf ihr Flehen; wenn sie Brandopfer und Speiseopfer darbringen, habe ich kein Gefallen an ihnen. Durch Schwert, Hunger und Pest mache ich ihnen ein Ende.
False Prophets
But, “Ah, Lord GOD!” I said, “Look, the prophets are telling them, ‘You will not see the sword nor will you have famine, but I will give you lasting peace in this place.’”
Da sagte ich: Ach, Herr und GOTT, die Propheten sagen doch zu ihnen: Ihr werdet das Schwert nicht sehen, der Hunger wird nicht über euch kommen, sondern beständiges Heil gewähre ich euch an diesem Ort.
Then the LORD said to me, “The prophets are prophesying falsehood in My name. I have neither sent them nor commanded them nor spoken to them; they are prophesying to you a false vision, divination, futility and the deception of their own minds.
Aber der HERR erwiderte mir: Lüge prophezeien die Propheten in meinem Namen. Ich habe sie weder gesandt noch beauftragt, ich habe nicht zu ihnen gesprochen. Erlogene Visionen, nichtige Wahrsagerei und selbst erdachten Betrug prophezeien sie euch.
“Therefore thus says the LORD concerning the prophets who are prophesying in My name, although it was not I who sent them — yet they keep saying, ‘There will be no sword or famine in this land’ — by sword and famine those prophets shall meet their end!
Darum spreche ich, der HERR, so gegen die Propheten, die in meinem Namen prophezeien, obwohl ich sie nicht gesandt habe, und die behaupten, Schwert und Hunger werde es nicht geben in diesem Land: Durch Schwert und Hunger werden diese Propheten ihr Ende finden.
“The people also to whom they are prophesying will be thrown out into the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword; and there will be no one to bury them — neither them, nor their wives, nor their sons, nor their daughters — for I will pour out their own wickedness on them.
Die Leute aber, denen sie prophezeien, werden auf den Straßen Jerusalems liegen, hingestreckt durch Hunger und Schwert. Niemand wird sie begraben, weder die Männer noch die Frauen, die Söhne oder die Töchter. So gieße ich ihre eigene Bosheit über sie aus.
“You will say this word to them,
‘Let my eyes flow down with tears night and day,
And let them not cease;
For the virgin daughter of my people has been crushed with a mighty blow,
With a sorely infected wound.

Du sollst zu ihnen dieses Wort sagen: Meine Augen fließen über von Tränen bei Nacht und bei Tag und finden keine Ruhe. Denn einen großen Zusammenbruch erlitt die Jungfrau, die Tochter, mein Volk, eine unheilbare Wunde.
‘If I go out to the country,
Behold, those slain with the sword!
Or if I enter the city,
Behold, diseases of famine!
For both prophet and priest
Have gone roving about in the land that they do not know.’”

Gehe ich aufs Feld hinaus — siehe: vom Schwert Durchbohrte! Komme ich in die Stadt — siehe: vom Hunger Gequälte! Ja, auch Prophet und Priester ziehen in ein Land, das sie nicht kennen.
Have You completely rejected Judah?
Or have You loathed Zion?
Why have You stricken us so that we are beyond healing?
We waited for peace, but nothing good came;
And for a time of healing, but behold, terror!

Hast du denn Juda ganz verworfen, wurde dir Zion zum Abscheu? Warum hast du uns so geschlagen, dass es für uns keine Heilung mehr gibt? Wir hofften auf Heil, doch kommt nichts Gutes, auf die Zeit der Heilung, doch siehe: nur Schrecken!
We know our wickedness, O LORD,

Wir erkennen, HERR, unser Unrecht, die Schuld unsrer Väter: Ja, wir haben gegen dich gesündigt.
Do not despise us, for Your own name’s sake;

Remember and do not annul Your covenant with us.

Um deines Namens willen verschmäh nicht, verstoß nicht den Thron deiner Herrlichkeit! Gedenke! Brich nicht deinen Bund mit uns!
Are there any among the idols of the nations who give rain?
Or can the heavens grant showers?
Is it not You, O LORD our God?
Therefore we hope in You,
For You are the one who has done all these things.

Gibt es etwa Regenspender unter den Götzen der Völker? Oder ist es der Himmel, der von selbst regnen lässt? Bist nicht du es, HERR, unser Gott? Wir setzen unsre Hoffnung auf dich; denn du hast dies alles gemacht.
