The Potter and the Clay
The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD saying,

Der HERR sprach zu mir:
“Arise and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will announce My words to you.”
»Geh hinab zum Haus des Töpfers, dort werde ich dir eine Botschaft geben!«
Then I went down to the potter’s house, and there he was, making something on the wheel.
Ich ging dorthin und sah, wie der Töpfer gerade ein Gefäß auf der Scheibe drehte.
But the vessel that he was making of clay was spoiled in the hand of the potter; so he remade it into another vessel, as it pleased the potter to make.
Doch es misslang ihm. Er nahm den Ton und formte ein neues Gefäß daraus, das ihm besser gefiel.
“Can I not, O house of Israel, deal with you as this potter does?” declares the LORD. “Behold, like the clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in My hand, O house of Israel.
»Volk Israel, kann ich mit euch nicht genauso umgehen wie dieser Töpfer mit dem Ton? Denn ihr seid ja in meiner Hand wie Ton in der Hand des Töpfers!
“At one moment I might speak concerning a nation or concerning a kingdom to uproot, to pull down, or to destroy it;
Wenn ich einem Volk oder Königreich androhe, es auszureißen und zu vernichten,
if that nation against which I have spoken turns from its evil, I will relent concerning the calamity I planned to bring on it.
dieses Volk sich aber von seiner Bosheit abwendet, dann werde ich meinen Entschluss ändern — ich lasse das angedrohte Unheil nicht über sie hereinbrechen.
“Or at another moment I might speak concerning a nation or concerning a kingdom to build up or to plant it;
Doch wenn ich einem Volk oder Königreich zusage, es einzupflanzen und aufzubauen,
if it does evil in My sight by not obeying My voice, then I will think better of the good with which I had promised to bless it.
dieses Volk aber Böses tut und nicht auf mich hört, dann lasse ich das Gute, das ich vorausgesagt habe, nicht geschehen.
“So now then, speak to the men of Judah and against the inhabitants of Jerusalem saying, ‘Thus says the LORD, “Behold, I am fashioning calamity against you and devising a plan against you. Oh turn back, each of you from his evil way, and reform your ways and your deeds.”’
Darum verkünde nun den Bewohnern von Jerusalem und ganz Juda: ›So spricht der HERR: Ich plane Böses gegen euch und bereite das Unglück vor, das ich über euch bringen will. Kehrt um von euren falschen Wegen, jeder von euch soll sein Leben von Grund auf ändern.‹
“But they will say, ‘It’s hopeless! For we are going to follow our own plans, and each of us will act according to the stubbornness of his evil heart.’
Aber sie werden entgegnen: ›Spar dir die Worte! Wir machen, was wir wollen — und sei es noch so eigensinnig und böse!‹«
“Therefore thus says the LORD,
‘Ask now among the nations,
Who ever heard the like of this?

Deshalb sagt der HERR: »Fragt doch die anderen Völker, ob man so etwas schon gehört hat: Mein Volk Israel hat etwas Abscheuliches getan!
‘Does the snow of Lebanon forsake the rock of the open country?
Or is the cold flowing water from a foreign land ever snatched away?

Taut jemals der Schnee auf den felsigen Gipfeln des Libanon? Hört das Wasser auf zu fließen, das aus fernen Quellen kommt? Nein, niemals!
‘For My people have forgotten Me,
They burn incense to worthless gods
And they have stumbled from their ways,
From the ancient paths,
To walk in bypaths,
Not on a highway,

Mein Volk aber hat mich vergessen! Sie opfern den Götzen, die ihnen nicht helfen können, und das brachte sie zu Fall. Nun gehen sie nicht mehr die guten Wege, die sie seit alter Zeit kennen. Ihre Götter haben sie auf falsche und unsichere Wege geführt.

An object of perpetual hissing;
Everyone who passes by it will be astonished
And shake his head.

Darum wird ihr Land für alle Zeiten zu einem Ort des Grauens und zur Zielscheibe des Spotts. Wer an ihm vorbeizieht, schüttelt entsetzt den Kopf.
‘Like an east wind I will scatter them
Before the enemy;
I will show them My back and not My face
In the day of their calamity.’”

Wenn der Feind kommt, will ich mein Volk in alle Winde zerstreuen, so wie ein Sturm aus dem Osten den Staub davontreibt. Wenn das Unheil über sie hereinbricht, kehre ich ihnen den Rücken und komme ihnen nicht zu Hilfe.«
Then they said, “Come and let us devise plans against Jeremiah. Surely the law is not going to be lost to the priest, nor counsel to the sage, nor the divine word to the prophet! Come on and let us strike at him with our tongue, and let us give no heed to any of his words.”
Die Israeliten berieten sich untereinander: »Wir müssen uns etwas einfallen lassen, um Jeremia loszuwerden! Es wird immer ein Priester da sein, der uns im Gesetz Gottes unterrichtet, wir werden immer genug Berater haben und Propheten, die uns Gottes Botschaft verkünden. Jeremia glauben wir nichts! Klagen wir ihn doch mit seinen eigenen Worten an!«

Da betete ich: »Hilf mir, o HERR! Hör, was meine Ankläger gegen mich vorbringen!

Sie vergelten mir Gutes mit Bösem, eine Grube haben sie mir gegraben. Denk daran, wie ich bei dir für sie eingestanden bin und für sie gebetet habe, um deinen Zorn von ihnen abzuwenden.

And deliver them up to the power of the sword;
And let their wives become childless and widowed.

Lass ihre Kinder verhungern und sie selbst durch das Schwert der Feinde umkommen! Die Frauen sollen ihre Kinder verlieren und zu Witwen werden! Lass die Männer den Tod finden, und die jungen Soldaten sollen im Kampf niedergemetzelt werden!

Lass Räuberbanden plötzlich über sie herfallen, damit man Schreie des Entsetzens in ihren Häusern hört! Denn sie haben mir eine Grube gegraben und mir Fallen gestellt.
Yet You, O LORD, know
All their deadly designs against me;
Do not forgive their iniquity
Or blot out their sin from Your sight.
But may they be overthrown before You;
Deal with them in the time of Your anger!

HERR, du kennst ihre finsteren Pläne gegen mich und ihre Mordgedanken. Vergib ihnen nicht ihre Schuld! Vergiss nicht, was sie getan haben! Bring sie vor deinen Augen zu Fall an dem Tag, wenn dein Zorn sie trifft!«
