Vision of the Ram and Goat
In the third year of the reign of Belshazzar the king a vision appeared to me, Daniel, subsequent to the one which appeared to me previously.

I looked in the vision, and while I was looking I was in the citadel of Susa, which is in the province of Elam; and I looked in the vision and I myself was beside the Ulai Canal.
Ich hatte eine Vision, und während ich sie sah, befand ich mich in der Burg Susa, die in der Provinz Elam liegt, am Ulai-Kanal.
Then I lifted my eyes and looked, and behold, a ram which had two horns was standing in front of the canal. Now the two horns were long, but one was longer than the other, with the longer one coming up last.
Ich blickte auf und sah, wie ein Widder am Kanal stand; er hatte zwei Hörner. Beide Hörner waren sehr hoch; doch das eine war noch höher als das andere und das höhere wuchs ihm zuletzt.
I saw the ram butting westward, northward, and southward, and no other beasts could stand before him nor was there anyone to rescue from his power, but he did as he pleased and magnified himself.
Ich sah, wie der Widder nach Westen, Norden und Süden stieß; kein Tier hielt ihm stand und es gab keinen, der sich aus seiner Gewalt retten konnte. Er tat, was er wollte, und machte sich groß.
While I was observing, behold, a male goat was coming from the west over the surface of the whole earth without touching the ground; and the goat had a conspicuous horn between his eyes.
Dann bemerkte ich einen Ziegenbock; er überquerte von Westen her die ganze Erde, ohne aber den Boden zu berühren; der Bock hatte ein auffallendes Horn zwischen den Augen.
He came up to the ram that had the two horns, which I had seen standing in front of the canal, and rushed at him in his mighty wrath.
Er lief zu dem Widder mit den zwei Hörnern, den ich am Kanal stehen sah, und rannte mit grimmiger Kraft auf ihn los.
I saw him come beside the ram, and he was enraged at him; and he struck the ram and shattered his two horns, and the ram had no strength to withstand him. So he hurled him to the ground and trampled on him, and there was none to rescue the ram from his power.
Ich sah, wie er auf den Widder losging und ihm wütend zusetzte. Er stieß gegen den Widder und brach ihm beide Hörner ab. Der Widder hatte nicht die Kraft, ihm standzuhalten. Da warf der Ziegenbock ihn zu Boden und zertrat ihn; und niemand war da, um den Widder aus seiner Gewalt zu retten.
Then the male goat magnified himself exceedingly. But as soon as he was mighty, the large horn was broken; and in its place there came up four conspicuous horns toward the four winds of heaven.
Der Ziegenbock wurde über die Maßen groß. Als er aber am stärksten war, brach das große Horn ab. An seiner Stelle wuchsen ihm vier auffallende Hörner, und zwar nach den vier Himmelsrichtungen.
The Little Horn
Out of one of them came forth a rather small horn which grew exceedingly great toward the south, toward the east, and toward the Beautiful Land.
Aus einem ging dann ein anderes Horn hervor. Anfangs klein, wurde es überaus groß, gegen Süden und gegen Osten und gegen die Zierde.
It grew up to the host of heaven and caused some of the host and some of the stars to fall to the earth, and it trampled them down.
Und es wuchs bis zum Himmelsheer und warf einige vom Heer und von den Sternen zur Erde herab und zertrat sie.
It even magnified itself to be equal with the Commander of the host; and it removed the regular sacrifice from Him, and the place of His sanctuary was thrown down.
Sogar bis zum Fürsten des Himmelsheeres reckte es sich empor; es entzog ihm das tägliche Opfer und verwüstet wurde sein Heiligtum.
And on account of transgression the host will be given over to the horn along with the regular sacrifice; and it will fling truth to the ground and perform its will and prosper.
Ein Heer wurde verbrecherisch gegen das tägliche Opfer eingesetzt. Es warf die Wahrheit zu Boden, und was es tat, gelang ihm.
Then I heard a holy one speaking, and another holy one said to that particular one who was speaking, “How long will the vision about the regular sacrifice apply, while the transgression causes horror, so as to allow both the holy place and the host to be trampled?”
Da hörte ich einen Heiligen reden und ein anderer Heiliger fragte den Redenden: Wie lange gilt die Vision vom täglichen Opfer, wie lange bleibt der Gräuel der Verwüstung bestehen und werden das Heiligtum und der Ort der Zierde zertreten?
He said to me, “For 2,300 evenings and mornings; then the holy place will be properly restored.”
Er sagte zu mir: Zweitausenddreihundert Abende und Morgen wird es dauern; dann erhält das Heiligtum wieder sein Recht.
Interpretation of the Vision
When I, Daniel, had seen the vision, I sought to understand it; and behold, standing before me was one who looked like a man.
Während ich, Daniel, noch diese Vision hatte und sie zu verstehen suchte, da stand vor mir einer, der aussah wie ein Mann.
And I heard the voice of a man between the banks of Ulai, and he called out and said, “Gabriel, give this man an understanding of the vision.”
Und über dem Ulai-Kanal hörte ich eine Menschenstimme, die rief: Gabriel, erkläre ihm die Vision!
So he came near to where I was standing, and when he came I was frightened and fell on my face; but he said to me, “Son of man, understand that the vision pertains to the time of the end.”
Da kam er auf mich zu. Als er nähertrat, erschrak ich und fiel mit dem Gesicht zu Boden. Er sagte zu mir: Mensch, versteh: Die Vision betrifft die Zeit des Endes.
Now while he was talking with me, I sank into a deep sleep with my face to the ground; but he touched me and made me stand upright.
Während er mit mir redete, lag ich ohnmächtig da, mit dem Gesicht am Boden. Da berührte er mich und stellte mich wieder auf die Beine.
He said, “Behold, I am going to let you know what will occur at the final period of the indignation, for it pertains to the appointed time of the end.
Dann sagte er: Siehe, ich kündige dir an, was in der letzten Zeit, der Zeit des Zorns, geschehen wird; denn die Vision bezieht sich auf die Zeit des Endes.
The Ram’s Identity
“The ram which you saw with the two horns represents the kings of Media and Persia.
Der Widder mit den zwei Hörnern, den du gesehen hast, bedeutet die Könige von Medien und Persien.
The Goat
“The shaggy goat represents the kingdom of Greece, and the large horn that is between his eyes is the first king.
Der Ziegenbock ist der König von Jawan. Das große Horn zwischen seinen Augen ist der erste König.
“The broken horn and the four horns that arose in its place represent four kingdoms which will arise from his nation, although not with his power.
Das Horn brach ab und vier andere traten an seine Stelle; das bedeutet: Aus seinem Volk entstehen vier Reiche; sie haben aber nicht die gleiche Kraft wie er.
“In the latter period of their rule,
When the transgressors have run their course,
A king will arise,
Insolent and skilled in intrigue.

In der letzten Zeit ihrer Herrschaft, wenn die Frevler ihr Maß vollgemacht haben, kommt ein König voll Härte und Verschlagenheit.

And he will destroy to an extraordinary degree
And prosper and perform his will;
He will destroy mighty men and the holy people.

Er wird mächtig und stark und richtet ungeheures Verderben an; alles, was er unternimmt, gelingt ihm. Mächtige Herrscher wird er vernichten, auch das Volk der Heiligen.
“And through his shrewdness
He will cause deceit to succeed by his influence;
And he will magnify himself in his heart,
And he will destroy many while they are at ease.
He will even oppose the Prince of princes,
But he will be broken without human agency.

Dank seiner Schlauheit gelingt ihm sein Betrug. Er wird überheblich und bringt über viele unversehens Verderben. Selbst gegen den Fürsten der Fürsten steht er auf; doch ohne Zutun eines Menschen wird er zerschmettert.

For it pertains to many days in the future.”

Die Vision von den Abenden und den Morgen, die dir offenbart wurde, ist wahr; doch du sollst sie geheim halten; denn sie bezieht sich auf eine ferne Zeit.
Then I, Daniel, was exhausted and sick for days. Then I got up again and carried on the king’s business; but I was astounded at the vision, and there was none to explain it.
Darauf war ich, Daniel, erschöpft und lag mehrere Tage krank danieder. Dann stand ich wieder auf und versah meinen Dienst beim König. Doch die Vision bedrückte mich und ich verstand sie nicht.
