The Purifier
“Behold, I am going to send My messenger, and he will clear the way before Me. And the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to His temple; and the messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight, behold, He is coming,” says the LORD of hosts.

Seht, ich sende meinen Boten; er soll den Weg für mich bahnen. Dann kommt plötzlich zu seinem Tempel der Herr, den ihr sucht, und der Bote des Bundes, den ihr herbeiwünscht. Seht, er kommt!, spricht der HERR der Heerscharen.
“But who can endure the day of His coming? And who can stand when He appears? For He is like a refiner’s fire and like fullers’ soap.
Doch wer erträgt den Tag, an dem er kommt? Wer kann bestehen, wenn er erscheint? Denn er ist wie das Feuer des Schmelzers und wie die Lauge der Walker.
“He will sit as a smelter and purifier of silver, and He will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, so that they may present to the LORD offerings in righteousness.
Er setzt sich, um das Silber zu schmelzen und zu reinigen: Er reinigt die Söhne Levis, er läutert sie wie Gold und Silber. Dann werden sie dem HERRN die richtigen Opfer darbringen.
“Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the LORD as in the days of old and as in former years.
Und dem HERRN wird das Opfer Judas und Jerusalems angenehm sein wie in den Tagen der Vorzeit, wie in längst vergangenen Jahren.
“Then I will draw near to you for judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers and against the adulterers and against those who swear falsely, and against those who oppress the wage earner in his wages, the widow and the orphan, and those who turn aside the alien and do not fear Me,” says the LORD of hosts.
Ich komme herbei, um euch zu richten; schnell trete ich als Zeuge auf gegen die Zauberer und die Ehebrecher, gegen die Meineidigen und gegen alle, welche die Taglöhner, Witwen und Waisen ausbeuten, den Fremden im Land ihr Recht verweigern und mich nicht fürchten, spricht der HERR der Heerscharen.
“For I, the LORD, do not change; therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed.
Nein, ich, der HERR, habe mich nicht geändert und ihr habt nicht aufgehört, Söhne Jakobs zu sein.
“From the days of your fathers you have turned aside from My statutes and have not kept them. Return to Me, and I will return to you,” says the LORD of hosts. “But you say, ‘How shall we return?’
Seit den Tagen eurer Väter seid ihr von meinen Gesetzen abgewichen und habt auf sie nicht geachtet. Kehrt um zu mir, dann kehre ich mich euch zu, spricht der HERR der Heerscharen. Doch ihr sagt: Worin soll denn unsere Umkehr bestehen? —
You Have Robbed God
“Will a man rob God? Yet you are robbing Me! But you say, ‘How have we robbed You?’ In tithes and offerings.
Darf der Mensch Gott berauben? Denn ihr beraubt mich. Doch ihr sagt: Wobei berauben wir dich? — Bei dem Zehnten und bei der Abgabe!
“You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing Me, the whole nation of you!
Dem Fluch seid ihr verfallen, doch ihr beraubt mich weiter, ihr, das ganze Volk.
“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this,” says the LORD of hosts, “if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows.
Bringt den ganzen Zehnten ins Vorratshaus, damit in meinem Haus Nahrung vorhanden ist! Ja, stellt mich auf die Probe damit, spricht der HERR der Heerscharen, ob ich euch dann nicht die Schleusen des Himmels öffne und Segen im Übermaß auf euch herabschütte.
“Then I will rebuke the devourer for you, so that it will not destroy the fruits of the ground; nor will your vine in the field cast its grapes,” says the LORD of hosts.
Den Fresser wehre ich von euch ab, damit er euch die Frucht des Ackers nicht vertilgt und damit euch der Weinstock auf dem Feld nicht ohne Ertrag bleibt, spricht der HERR der Heerscharen.
“All the nations will call you blessed, for you shall be a delightful land,” says the LORD of hosts.
Dann werden alle Völker euch glücklich preisen; denn ihr seid ein glückliches Land, spricht der HERR der Heerscharen.
“Your words have been arrogant against Me,” says the LORD. “Yet you say, ‘What have we spoken against You?’
Was ihr über mich sagt, ist kühn, spricht der HERR. Doch ihr fragt: Was sagen wir denn über dich?
“You have said, ‘It is vain to serve God; and what profit is it that we have kept His charge, and that we have walked in mourning before the LORD of hosts?
Ihr sagt: Es hat keinen Sinn, Gott zu dienen. Was haben wir davon, wenn wir auf seine Anordnungen achten und vor dem HERRN der Heerscharen in Trauergewändern umhergehen?
‘So now we call the arrogant blessed; not only are the doers of wickedness built up but they also test God and escape.’”
Darum preisen wir die Überheblichen glücklich, denn die Frevler haben Erfolg; sie stellen Gott auf die Probe und kommen doch straflos davon.
The Book of Remembrance
Then those who feared the LORD spoke to one another, and the LORD gave attention and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before Him for those who fear the LORD and who esteem His name.
Darüber redeten die miteinander, die den HERRN fürchten. Der HERR horchte auf und hörte hin. Und man schrieb vor ihm ein Buch, das alle in Erinnerung hält, die den HERRN fürchten und seinen Namen achten.
“They will be Mine,” says the LORD of hosts, “on the day that I prepare My own possession, and I will spare them as a man spares his own son who serves him.”
Sie werden an dem Tag, den ich herbeiführe — spricht der HERR der Heerscharen — , mein besonderes Eigentum sein. Ich werde gut zu ihnen sein, wie ein Mann gut ist zu seinem Sohn, der ihm dient.
