Death of Miriam

Then the sons of Israel, the whole congregation, came to the wilderness of Zin in the first month; and the people stayed at Kadesh. Now Miriam died there and was buried there.

Першого місяця ізраїльські сини всією громадою прийшли до пустелі Сін, і народ перебував у Кадисі. Там померла Маріам, і там вона була похована.

There was no water for the congregation, and they assembled themselves against Moses and Aaron.

2

Та не було води для громади, і вони об’єдналися разом проти Мойсея та Аарона.

The people thus contended with Moses and spoke, saying, “If only we had perished when our brothers perished before the LORD!

Тож народ почав нарікати на Мойсея, кажучи: Краще було померти нам під час загибелі наших братів перед Господом!

“Why then have you brought the LORD’S assembly into this wilderness, for us and our beasts to die here?

4

І навіщо ви привели Господню громаду в цю пустелю, щоб вигубити нас і нашу худобу?

5

“Why have you made us come up from Egypt, to bring us in to this wretched place? It is not a place of grain or figs or vines or pomegranates, nor is there water to drink.”

І навіщо ви нас вивели з Єгипту, щоб привести в це ні до чого не придатне місце? Це місце, де не сіється, де немає ні смокв, ні винограду, ні гранатів, ні води для пиття?

Then Moses and Aaron came in from the presence of the assembly to the doorway of the tent of meeting and fell on their faces. Then the glory of the LORD appeared to them;

and the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

The Water of Meribah

“Take the rod; and you and your brother Aaron assemble the congregation and speak to the rock before their eyes, that it may yield its water. You shall thus bring forth water for them out of the rock and let the congregation and their beasts drink.”

8

Візьми посох і збери громаду, ти й Аарон, твій брат; і примовте перед ними до скелі, і вона дасть свою воду, і виведете їм воду з каменя, і напоїте громаду та їхню худобу.

9

So Moses took the rod from before the LORD, just as He had commanded him;

9

І Мойсей узяв посох, що перед Господом, як і заповів Господь.

10

and Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly before the rock. And he said to them, “Listen now, you rebels; shall we bring forth water for you out of this rock?”

10

І Мойсей з Аароном зібрали громаду перед скелею, і Мойсей їм сказав: Послухайте мене, ви, які не вірите! Хіба із цього каменя ми виведемо для вас воду?

Then Moses lifted up his hand and struck the rock twice with his rod; and water came forth abundantly, and the congregation and their beasts drank.

І Мойсей, піднявши свою руку, двічі вдарив об камінь посохом, і вийшло багато води; і пила громада та їхня худоба.

12

But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you have not believed Me, to treat Me as holy in the sight of the sons of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.”

А Господь сказав Мойсеєві та Ааронові: Оскільки ви не повірили, що з’явиться святість Моя перед ізраїльськими синами, то ви не введете цієї громади в землю, яку Я їй дав!

13

Those were the waters of Meribah, because the sons of Israel contended with the LORD, and He proved Himself holy among them.

Це — Вода Суперечки Мериви, бо ізраїльські сини нарікали перед Господом, а Його святість була в них!

14

From Kadesh Moses then sent messengers to the king of Edom: “Thus your brother Israel has said, ‘You know all the hardship that has befallen us;

З Кадиса Мойсей послав вісників до царя Едому сказати: Так говорить твій брат Ізраїль: Ти знаєш про всі турботи, які найшли на нас.

15

that our fathers went down to Egypt, and we stayed in Egypt a long time, and the Egyptians treated us and our fathers badly.

15

І наші батьки пішли в Єгипет, і ми жили в Єгипті багато часу, і єгиптяни гнобили нас і наших батьків.

16

‘But when we cried out to the LORD, He heard our voice and sent an angel and brought us out from Egypt; now behold, we are at Kadesh, a town on the edge of your territory.

16

Та ми закликали до Господа, і Господь прислухався до нашого голосу, і, пославши ангела, вивів нас із Єгипту, а тепер ми в Кадисі, у місті, що на краю твоїх кордонів.

17

‘Please let us pass through your land. We will not pass through field or through vineyard; we will not even drink water from a well. We will go along the king’s highway, not turning to the right or left, until we pass through your territory.’”

Тож перейдемо через твою землю; ми не проходитимемо через поля, ні через виноградники; не будемо пити води з твоїх водоймищ; підемо царською дорогою, не звернемо ні праворуч, ні ліворуч, доки не перейдемо твого кордону.

18

Edom, however, said to him, “You shall not pass through us, or I will come out with the sword against you.”

18

Та Едом відповів йому: Не перейдеш через мою територію! А ні, то війною вийду тобі назустріч!

19

Again, the sons of Israel said to him, “We will go up by the highway, and if I and my livestock do drink any of your water, then I will pay its price. Let me only pass through on my feet, nothing else.”

19

А ізраїльські сини говорять йому: Під горою перейдемо; якщо ж твою воду питимемо, — ми і наша худоба, — то дамо тобі плату. Адже перейти попід горою — справа не варта уваги.

20

But he said, “You shall not pass through.” And Edom came out against him with a heavy force and with a strong hand.

20

Він же сказав: Не перейдеш через мою територію! І вийшов Едом їм назустріч із численним народом та сильною рукою.

21

Thus Edom refused to allow Israel to pass through his territory; so Israel turned away from him.

21

І не захотів Едом дати Ізраїлеві перейти через свої кордони, тож Ізраїль звернув убік від нього.

22

Now when they set out from Kadesh, the sons of Israel, the whole congregation, came to Mount Hor.

22

І вони рушили з Кадиса. І прийшли ізраїльські сини, уся громада, до гори Ор.

23

Death of Aaron

Then the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron at Mount Hor by the border of the land of Edom, saying,

А біля гори Ор, поблизу кордону Едомської землі, Господь звернувся до Мойсея та Аарона, кажучи:

24

“Aaron will be gathered to his people; for he shall not enter the land which I have given to the sons of Israel, because you rebelled against My command at the waters of Meribah.

24

Нехай Аарон приєднається до свого народу, бо ви не ввійдете в землю, яку Я дав ізраїльським синам, оскільки ви розгнівили Мене біля Води Суперечки.

25

“Take Aaron and his son Eleazar and bring them up to Mount Hor;

25

Візьми Аарона й Елеазара, його сина, і перед усією громадою виведи їх на гору Ор.

26

and strip Aaron of his garments and put them on his son Eleazar. So Aaron will be gathered to his people, and will die there.”

26

І роздягни Аарона з його шат, і зодягни його сина Елеазара. І Аарон, приєднавшись до свого народу, нехай там помре.

27

So Moses did just as the LORD had commanded, and they went up to Mount Hor in the sight of all the congregation.

27

І Мойсей учинив так, як заповів Господь, — він вивів його на гору Ор перед усією громадою.

28

After Moses had stripped Aaron of his garments and put them on his son Eleazar, Aaron died there on the mountain top. Then Moses and Eleazar came down from the mountain.

28

Він роздягнув Аарона з його шат, і зодягнув у них Елеазара, його сина. Аарон помер на вершині гори, і Мойсей та Елеазар спустилися з гори самі.

29

When all the congregation saw that Aaron had died, all the house of Israel wept for Aaron thirty days.

29

І вся громада побачила, що Аарон помер. І весь дім Ізраїля оплакував Аарона тридцять днів.
