Arad Conquered

Der König von Arad im Süden Kanaans hörte, dass die Israeliten auf dem Weg nach Atarim herankamen. Er griff sie mit seinem Heer an und nahm etliche von ihnen gefangen.
So Israel made a vow to the LORD and said, “If You will indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities.”
Da legten die Israeliten vor dem HERRN ein Gelübde ab: »Wenn du dieses Volk in unsere Gewalt gibst, werden wir an ihren Städten dein Urteil vollstrecken.«
The LORD heard the voice of Israel and delivered up the Canaanites; then they utterly destroyed them and their cities. Thus the name of the place was called Hormah.
Der HERR erhörte sie und gab ihnen den Sieg über die Kanaaniter. Die Israeliten töteten ihre Feinde und zerstörten deren Städte. Den Ort des Kampfes nennt man daher Horma (»Vernichtung«).
Then they set out from Mount Hor by the way of the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom; and the people became impatient because of the journey.
Danach brachen die Israeliten vom Berg Hor auf und zogen zunächst wieder nach Süden in Richtung des Schilfmeers, um das Land Edom zu umgehen. Doch unterwegs verloren sie die Geduld
The people spoke against God and Moses, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this miserable food.”
und klagten Gott und Mose an: »Warum habt ihr uns aus Ägypten geholt? Damit wir in der Wüste sterben? Es gibt kein Brot, es gibt kein Wasser, nur immer dieses armselige Manna. Das hängt uns zum Hals heraus!«
The Bronze Serpent
The LORD sent fiery serpents among the people and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died.
Da schickte der HERR ihnen Schlangen, deren Gift wie Feuer brannte. Viele Menschen wurden gebissen und starben.
So the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, because we have spoken against the LORD and you; intercede with the LORD, that He may remove the serpents from us.” And Moses interceded for the people.
Die Israeliten liefen zu Mose und riefen: »Wir haben uns schuldig gemacht! Es war falsch, dass wir uns gegen dich und den HERRN aufgelehnt haben. Bitte den HERRN, uns von den Schlangen zu befreien!« Da betete Mose für das Volk,
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a standard; and it shall come about, that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, he will live.”
und der HERR antwortete ihm: »Mach dir eine Schlange aus Bronze und befestige sie am Ende einer Stange. Dann sag den Israeliten: Jeder, der gebissen wird und sie ansieht, bleibt am Leben.«
And Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on the standard; and it came about, that if a serpent bit any man, when he looked to the bronze serpent, he lived.
Mose fertigte eine Schlange aus Bronze an und befestigte sie an einer Stange. Nun musste niemand mehr durch das Gift der Schlangen sterben. Wer gebissen wurde und zu der Schlange schaute, war gerettet.
Now the sons of Israel moved out and camped in Oboth.
Die Israeliten setzten ihren Weg fort. Als Nächstes schlugen sie ihr Lager in Obot auf,
They journeyed from Oboth and camped at Iye-abarim, in the wilderness which is opposite Moab, to the east.
dann in Ije-Abarim, das in der Wüste östlich von Moab liegt.
From there they journeyed and camped on the other side of the Arnon, which is in the wilderness that comes out of the border of the Amorites, for the Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.
Von dort ging es weiter in die Wüste südlich des Arnon. Dieser Fluss entspringt in dem Gebiet, wo die Amoriter lebten; er bildete die Grenze zwischen ihnen und den Moabitern, die weiter südlich wohnten.
Therefore it is said in the Book of the Wars of the LORD,
“Waheb in Suphah,
And the wadis of the Arnon,

And the wadis of the Arnon,

die Wasser, die an Moabs Grenze zur Stadt Ar hinunterfließen.«
From there they continued to Beer, that is the well where the LORD said to Moses, “Assemble the people, that I may give them water.”
Von dort zogen die Israeliten weiter nach Beer, das nach einem Brunnen benannt war. Hier sprach der HERR zu Mose: »Ruf das Volk zusammen! Ich will euch Wasser geben.«
Then Israel sang this song:
“Spring up, O well! Sing to it!
“Spring up, O well! Sing to it!
Damals entstand dieses Lied: »Brunnen, fülle dich mit Wasser! Dich besingen wir.
“The well, which the leaders sank,
Which the nobles of the people dug,
With the scepter and with their staffs.”
And from the wilderness they continued to Mattanah,
Which the nobles of the people dug,
With the scepter and with their staffs.”
And from the wilderness they continued to Mattanah,
Fürsten haben dich gegraben, Herrscher haben hier mit dem Zepter in der Hand dich gebohrt durch Stein und Sand.« Von Beer in der Wüste ging es weiter nach Mattana.
and from Mattanah to Nahaliel, and from Nahaliel to Bamoth,
Danach lagerten die Israeliten in Nahaliël und Bamot-Baal.
and from Bamoth to the valley that is in the land of Moab, at the top of Pisgah which overlooks the wasteland.
Schließlich erreichten sie die Ebene im Land der Moabiter, aus der sich der Berg Pisga erhebt. Von dort aus konnte man weit ins untere Jordantal hinabsehen.
Two Victories
Then Israel sent messengers to Sihon, king of the Amorites, saying,
Die Israeliten sandten Boten zu Sihon, dem König der Amoriter, und baten ihn:
“Let me pass through your land. We will not turn off into field or vineyard; we will not drink water from wells. We will go by the king’s highway until we have passed through your border.”
»Lass uns durch euer Land ziehen. Wir werden eure Felder und Weinberge nicht betreten und kein Wasser aus euren Brunnen trinken. Wir bleiben auf der großen Straße, bis wir euer Gebiet wieder verlassen haben.«
But Sihon would not permit Israel to pass through his border. So Sihon gathered all his people and went out against Israel in the wilderness, and came to Jahaz and fought against Israel.
Aber Sihon erlaubte es ihnen nicht, sondern rief sein Heer zusammen und zog Israel in der Wüste entgegen. Bei Jahaz kam es zur Schlacht.
Then Israel struck him with the edge of the sword, and took possession of his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, as far as the sons of Ammon; for the border of the sons of Ammon was Jazer.
Die Israeliten töteten die Amoriter mit dem Schwert und eroberten das ganze Land zwischen den Flüssen Arnon im Süden und Jabbok im Norden. Am Jabbok begann das Gebiet der Ammoniter, deren Grenze gut gesichert war.
Israel took all these cities and Israel lived in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all her villages.
Die Israeliten nahmen nach und nach alle Städte der Amoriter ein und ließen sich dort nieder, vor allem in Heschbon und den umliegenden Orten.
For Heshbon was the city of Sihon, king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab and had taken all his land out of his hand, as far as the Arnon.
Heschbon war die Stadt des amoritischen Königs Sihon gewesen. Er hatte einst den moabitischen König, dem das Land vorher gehörte, angegriffen und das ganze Gebiet bis hinunter zum Arnon besetzt.
Therefore those who use proverbs say,
“Come to Heshbon! Let it be built!
So let the city of Sihon be established.
“Come to Heshbon! Let it be built!
So let the city of Sihon be established.
Daher heißt es in einem Gedicht: »Kommt nach Heschbon, zur Stadt Sihons! Baut sie wieder auf, errichtet ihre Mauern neu!
“For a fire went forth from Heshbon,
A flame from the town of Sihon;
It devoured Ar of Moab,
The dominant heights of the Arnon.
A flame from the town of Sihon;
It devoured Ar of Moab,
The dominant heights of the Arnon.
Einst brachen Sihons Truppen aus Heschbon hervor wie ein Feuer, sie zerstörten die Stadt Ar-Moab hoch über dem Arnontal, die Stadt, in der die Herrscher Moabs lebten.
“Woe to you, O Moab!
You are ruined, O people of Chemosh!
He has given his sons as fugitives,
And his daughters into captivity,
To an Amorite king, Sihon.
You are ruined, O people of Chemosh!
He has given his sons as fugitives,
And his daughters into captivity,
To an Amorite king, Sihon.
Wehe euch, ihr Moabiter! Ihr seid verloren! Euer Gott Kemosch hat euch aus der Heimat vertrieben. Er hat eure Frauen und Mädchen in die Gewalt des Amoriterkönigs Sihon gegeben.
“But we have cast them down,
Heshbon is ruined as far as Dibon,
Then we have laid waste even to Nophah,
Which reaches to Medeba.”

Doch dann sind wir gekommen und haben die Amoriter besiegt. Jetzt liegt alles zwischen Heschbon und Dibon in Trümmern. Bis nach Nofach haben wir ihre Städte verwüstet, bis nach Medeba haben wir sie verbrannt.«
Thus Israel lived in the land of the Amorites.
So wohnten die Israeliten nun in dem Gebiet, das vorher den Amoritern gehört hatte.
Moses sent to spy out Jazer, and they captured its villages and dispossessed the Amorites who were there.
Von hier aus ließ Mose Jaser erkunden, wo ebenfalls Amoriter lebten. Die Israeliten vertrieben auch sie und nahmen ihre Stadt und die umliegenden Orte ein.
Then they turned and went up by the way of Bashan, and Og the king of Bashan went out with all his people, for battle at Edrei.
Dann zogen die Israeliten nach Norden in Richtung Baschan. Auf dem Weg kam ihnen Og, der König von Baschan, mit seinem ganzen Heer entgegen. Bei Edreï trafen sie aufeinander.
But the LORD said to Moses, “Do not fear him, for I have given him into your hand, and all his people and his land; and you shall do to him as you did to Sihon, king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon.”
Da sprach der HERR zu Mose: »Hab keine Angst vor ihm! Ich werde Og, sein ganzes Heer und sein Land in deine Gewalt geben. Vernichte ihn so wie Sihon, den Amoriterkönig aus Heschbon.«
