Now when John, while imprisoned, heard of the works of Christ, he sent word by his disciples
Прочувши ж Іван у в'язни́ці про дії Христові, послав через учнів своїх,
and said to Him, “Are You the Expected One, or shall we look for someone else?”
щоб Його запитати: „Чи Ти Той, Хто має прийти, чи чекати нам Іншого?“
Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and report to John what you hear and see:
Ісус же промовив у відповідь їм: „Ідіть, і перекажіть Іванові, що́ ви чуєте й бачите:
the BLIND RECEIVE SIGHT and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the POOR HAVE THE GOSPEL PREACHED TO THEM.
„Сліпі прозріва́ють“, і криві ходять, стають чистими прокаже́ні, і чують глухі, і померлі встають, а „вбогим звіщається Добра Нови́на“.
“And blessed is he who does not take offense at Me.”
І блаженний, хто через Мене споку́си не ма́тиме!“
Jesus’ Tribute to John
As these men were going away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John, “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?
Як вони ж відійшли, Ісус про Івана почав говорити наро́дові: „На що́ ви ходили в пустиню дивитися? Чи на очерет, що вітер гойда́є його́?
“But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Those who wear soft clothing are in kings’ palaces!
Та на що́ ви дивитись ходили? Може на чоловіка, у м'які шати одя́гненого? Аджеж ті, хто носить м'яке́, — по палатах царськи́х.
“But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and one who is more than a prophet.
По що́ ж ви ходили? Може бачити пророка? Так, кажу вам, — навіть більш, як пророка.
“This is the one about whom it is written,
‘BEHOLD, I SEND MY MESSENGER AHEAD OF YOU,
WHO WILL PREPARE YOUR WAY BEFORE YOU.’
‘BEHOLD, I SEND MY MESSENGER AHEAD OF YOU,
WHO WILL PREPARE YOUR WAY BEFORE YOU.’
Бо це ж той, що про нього написано: „Ось перед обличчя Твоє посилаю Свого посланця́, який перед Тобою дорогу Твою приготує!“
“Truly I say to you, among those born of women there has not arisen anyone greater than John the Baptist! Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
Поправді кажу вам: Між наро́дженими від жінок не було більшого над Івана Христителя! Та найменший у Царстві Небеснім — той більший від нього!
“From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and violent men take it by force.
Від днів же Івана Христителя й досі Царство Небесне здобува́ється силою, і ті, хто вживає зусилля, хапа́ють його.
“For all the prophets and the Law prophesied until John.
Усі бо Пророки й Зако́н до Івана прові́щували.
“And if you are willing to accept it, John himself is Elijah who was to come.
Коли ж хочете знати, — то Ілля він, що має прийти.
“But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the market places, who call out to the other children,
До кого ж цей рід прирівняю? — До хлоп'ят він подібний, що на ринку сидять та вигукують іншим,
and say, ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.’
і кажуть: „Ми вам грали, а ви не танцювали, ми співали вам жа́лібно, та не плакали ви“.
“For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon!’
Бо прийшов був Іван, що не їв і не пив, вони ж кажуть: „Він де́мона має“.
“The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.”
Прийшов же Син Лю́дський, що їсть і п'є, вони ж кажуть: „Чоловік ось, ласу́н і п'яни́ця, Він при́ятель ми́тників і грішників“. І виправдалася мудрість своїми діла́ми“.
The Unrepenting Cities
Then He began to denounce the cities in which most of His miracles were done, because they did not repent.
Ісус тоді став докоряти містам, де́ відбуло́ся найбільш Його чуд, що вони не покаялись:
“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles had occurred in Tyre and Sidon which occurred in you, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
„Горе, тобі, Хоразі́не, горе тобі, Вефсаїдо! Бо коли б то в Ти́рі й Сидо́ні були відбули́ся ті чу́да, що сталися в вас, то давно б вони ка́ялися в волосяни́ці та в по́пелі.
“Nevertheless I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment than for you.
Але кажу́ вам: Легше буде дня судного Тиру й Сидону, ніж вам!
“And you, Capernaum, will not be exalted to heaven, will you? You will descend to Hades; for if the miracles had occurred in Sodom which occurred in you, it would have remained to this day.
А ти, Капернау́ме, що „до неба піднісся, — аж до аду ти зі́йдеш“. Бо коли б у Содомі були відбули́ся ті чу́да, що в тобі вони стались, то лишився б він був по сього́днішній день.
“Nevertheless I say to you that it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for you.”
Але кажу́ вам, що содо́мській землі буде легше дня судного, аніж тобі!“
Come to Me
At that time Jesus said, “I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants.
Того ча́су, навчаючи, промовив Ісус: „Прославляю Тебе, Отче, Господи неба й землі, що втаїв Ти оце від премудрих і розумних, та його немовля́там відкрив.
“Yes, Father, for this way was well-pleasing in Your sight.
Так, Отче, — бо Тобі так було до вподо́би!
“All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.
Передав Мені все Мій Отець. І Сина не знає ніхто, крім Отця, і Отця не знає ніхто, окрім Сина, та кому Син захоче відкрити.
“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.
Прийдіть до Мене, усі стру́джені та обтя́жені, — і Я вас заспоко́ю!
“Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS.
Візьміть на себе ярмо́ Моє, і навчіться від Мене, бо Я тихий і серцем покі́рливий, — і „зна́йдете спо́кій ду́шам своїм“.
