The Unrighteous Steward
Now He was also saying to the disciples, “There was a rich man who had a manager, and this manager was reported to him as squandering his possessions.
Now He was also saying to the disciples, “There was a rich man who had a manager, and this manager was reported to him as squandering his possessions.
Оповів же Він й учням Своїм: „Один чоловік був багатий, і мав управи́теля, що оска́ржений був перед ним, ніби він перево́дить маєток його.
“And he called him and said to him, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give an accounting of your management, for you can no longer be manager.’
І він покликав його, і до нього сказав: „Що́ це чую про тебе? Дай звіт про своє управи́тельство, бо більше не зможеш рядити“.
“The manager said to himself, ‘What shall I do, since my master is taking the management away from me? I am not strong enough to dig; I am ashamed to beg.
І управи́тель почав міркувати собі: „Що́ я маю робити, коли пан управи́тельство відійме від мене? Копати не можу, просити соромлюсь.
‘I know what I shall do, so that when I am removed from the management people will welcome me into their homes.’
Знаю, що́ я зроблю́, щоб мене прийняли́ до домів своїх, коли буду я ски́нений із управи́тельства“.
“And he summoned each one of his master’s debtors, and he began saying to the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’
І закликав він на́різно кожного з боржників свого пана, та її питається першого: „Скільки винен ти панові моєму?“
“And he said, ‘A hundred measures of oil.’ And he said to him, ‘Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty.’
А той відказав: „Сто кадок оливи“. І сказав він йому: „Візьми ось розписку свою, швидко сідай та й пиши: п'ятдеся́т“.
“Then he said to another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ And he said, ‘A hundred measures of wheat.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bill, and write eighty.’
А потім питається другого: „А ти скільки винен?“ І той відказав: „Сто кірців пшениці“. І сказав він йому: „Візьми ось розписку свою й напиши: вісімдеся́т“.
“And his master praised the unrighteous manager because he had acted shrewdly; for the sons of this age are more shrewd in relation to their own kind than the sons of light.
І пан похвалив управи́теля цього невірного, що він мудро вчинив. Бо сини цього світу в своїм поколінні мудріші, аніж сини світла.
“And I say to you, make friends for yourselves by means of the wealth of unrighteousness, so that when it fails, they will receive you into the eternal dwellings.
І Я вам кажу́: „Набувайте дру́зів собі від багатства неправедного, щоб, коли промине́ться воно, прийняли вас до вічних осель.
“He who is faithful in a very little thing is faithful also in much; and he who is unrighteous in a very little thing is unrighteous also in much.
Хто вірний в найменшому, — і в великому вірний; і хто несправедливий в найменшому, — і в великому несправедливий.
“Therefore if you have not been faithful in the use of unrighteous wealth, who will entrust the true riches to you?
Отож, коли в несправедливім багатстві ви не були вірні, — хто вам правдиве довірить?
“And if you have not been faithful in the use of that which is another’s, who will give you that which is your own?
І коли ви в чужому не були́ вірні, — хто ваше вам дасть?
“No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.”
Жа́ден раб не може служи́ть двом панам, — бо або одно́го знена́видить, а другого буде любити, або буде триматись одного, а другого зне́хтує. Не можете Богові й мамо́ні служити!“
Now the Pharisees, who were lovers of money, were listening to all these things and were scoffing at Him.
Чули все це й фарисеї, що були́ сріблолюбці, та й стали сміятися з Нього.
And He said to them, “You are those who justify yourselves in the sight of men, but God knows your hearts; for that which is highly esteemed among men is detestable in the sight of God.
Він же промовив до них: „Ви себе видаєте за праведних перед людьми́, але ваші серця знає Бог. Що бо високе в людей, те перед Богом гидо́та.
“The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John; since that time the gospel of the kingdom of God has been preached, and everyone is forcing his way into it.
Зако́н і Пророки були до Івана; відтоді Царство Боже благовісти́ться, і кожен силку́ється втиснутись в ньо́го.
“But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one stroke of a letter of the Law to fail.
Легше небо й земля промине́ться, аніж одна риса з Зако́ну загине.
“Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and he who marries one who is divorced from a husband commits adultery.
Кожен, хто дружи́ну свою відпускає, і бере собі іншу, той чинить пере́люб. І хто побереться з тією, яку хто відпустив, той чинить пере́люб.
The Rich Man and Lazarus
“Now there was a rich man, and he habitually dressed in purple and fine linen, joyously living in splendor every day.
Один чоловік був багатий, і зодягався в порфі́ру й віссо́н, і щоденно розкішно бенкетува́в.
“And a poor man named Lazarus was laid at his gate, covered with sores,
Був і вбогий один, на ім'я́ йому Ла́зар, що лежав у воріт його, стру́пами вкритий,
and longing to be fed with the crumbs which were falling from the rich man’s table; besides, even the dogs were coming and licking his sores.
і бажав годува́тися кри́шками, що зо сто́лу багатого падали; пси ж прихо́дили й рани лизали йому́.
“Now the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s bosom; and the rich man also died and was buried.
Та ось сталось, що вбогий умер, — і на Авраамове ло́но відне́сли його анголи́. Умер же й багатий, — і його поховали.
“In Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw Abraham far away and Lazarus in his bosom.
І, те́рплячи муки в аду́, звів він очі свої, та й побачив здаля Авраама та Лазаря на лоні його.
“And he cried out and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue, for I am in agony in this flame.’
І він закричав та сказав: „Змилуйся, отче Аврааме, надо мною, і пошли мені Ла́заря, — нехай умочить у воду кінця свого пальця, і мого язика́ прохоло́дить, бо я мучуся в по́лум'ї цім!“
“But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that during your life you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus bad things; but now he is being comforted here, and you are in agony.
Авраам же промовив: „Згадай, сину, що ти вже прийняв за життя свого добре своє, а Лазар так само — лихе; тепер він тут ті́шиться, а ти мучишся.
‘And besides all this, between us and you there is a great chasm fixed, so that those who wish to come over from here to you will not be able, and that none may cross over from there to us.’
А крім того всього́, поміж нами та вами велика безо́дня поста́влена, так що ті, що хо́чуть, перехо́дити не можуть ізвідси до вас, ані не переходять ізвідти до нас“.
“And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, that you send him to my father’s house —
А він відказав: „Отож, отче, благаю тебе, щоб його ти послав у дім ба́тька мого,
for I have five brothers — in order that he may warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’
бо п'ятьох братів маю, — хай він їм засві́дчить, щоб і вони не прийшли на це місце стражда́ння!“
“But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’
Авраам же сказав: „Вони мають Мойсея й Пророків, — нехай слухають їх!“
“But he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent!’
А він відказав: „Ні ж бо, отче Аврааме, — але коли при́йде хто з мертвих до них, то покаються“.
