The Death and Resurrection of Lazarus
Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.

Ein Mann war krank, Lazarus aus Betanien, dem Dorf der Maria und ihrer Schwester Marta.
It was the Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.
Maria war jene, die den Herrn mit Öl gesalbt und seine Füße mit ihren Haaren abgetrocknet hatte; deren Bruder Lazarus war krank.
So the sisters sent word to Him, saying, “Lord, behold, he whom You love is sick.”
Daher sandten die Schwestern Jesus die Nachricht: Herr, sieh: Der, den du liebst, er ist krank.
But when Jesus heard this, He said, “This sickness is not to end in death, but for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified by it.”
Als Jesus das hörte, sagte er: Diese Krankheit führt nicht zum Tod, sondern dient der Verherrlichung Gottes. Durch sie soll der Sohn Gottes verherrlicht werden.
Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
Jesus liebte aber Marta, ihre Schwester und Lazarus.
So when He heard that he was sick, He then stayed two days longer in the place where He was.
Als er hörte, dass Lazarus krank war, blieb er noch zwei Tage an dem Ort, wo er sich aufhielt.
Then after this He said to the disciples, “Let us go to Judea again.”
Danach sagte er zu den Jüngern: Lasst uns wieder nach Judäa gehen.
The disciples said to Him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone You, and are You going there again?”
Die Jünger sagten zu ihm: Rabbi, eben noch suchten dich die Juden zu steinigen und du gehst wieder dorthin?
Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.
Jesus antwortete: Hat der Tag nicht zwölf Stunden? Wenn jemand am Tag umhergeht, stößt er nicht an, weil er das Licht dieser Welt sieht;
“But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.”
wenn aber jemand in der Nacht umhergeht, stößt er an, weil das Licht nicht in ihm ist.
This He said, and after that He said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I go, so that I may awaken him out of sleep.”
So sprach er. Dann sagte er zu ihnen: Lazarus, unser Freund, schläft; aber ich gehe hin, um ihn aufzuwecken.
The disciples then said to Him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.”
Da sagten die Jünger zu ihm: Herr, wenn er schläft, dann wird er gesund werden.
Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that He was speaking of literal sleep.
Jesus hatte aber von seinem Tod gesprochen, während sie meinten, er spreche von dem gewöhnlichen Schlaf.
So Jesus then said to them plainly, “Lazarus is dead,
Darauf sagte ihnen Jesus unverhüllt: Lazarus ist gestorben.
and I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe; but let us go to him.”
Und ich freue mich für euch, dass ich nicht dort war; denn ich will, dass ihr glaubt. Doch wir wollen zu ihm gehen.
Therefore Thomas, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, so that we may die with Him.”
Da sagte Thomas, genannt Didymus, zu den anderen Jüngern: Lasst uns mit ihm gehen, um mit ihm zu sterben!
So when Jesus came, He found that he had already been in the tomb four days.
Als Jesus ankam, fand er Lazarus schon vier Tage im Grab liegen.
Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off;
Betanien war nahe bei Jerusalem, etwa fünfzehn Stadien entfernt.
and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother.

Martha therefore, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went to meet Him, but Mary stayed at the house.
Als Marta hörte, dass Jesus komme, ging sie ihm entgegen, Maria aber blieb im Haus sitzen.
Martha then said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.
Marta sagte zu Jesus: Herr, wärst du hier gewesen, dann wäre mein Bruder nicht gestorben.
“Even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You.”
Aber auch jetzt weiß ich: Alles, worum du Gott bittest, wird Gott dir geben.
Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”
Jesus sagte zu ihr: Dein Bruder wird auferstehen.
Martha said to Him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.”
Marta sagte zu ihm: Ich weiß, dass er auferstehen wird bei der Auferstehung am Jüngsten Tag.
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies,
Jesus sagte zu ihr: Ich bin die Auferstehung und das Leben. Wer an mich glaubt, wird leben, auch wenn er stirbt,
and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?”
und jeder, der lebt und an mich glaubt, wird auf ewig nicht sterben. Glaubst du das?
She said to Him, “Yes, Lord; I have believed that You are the Christ, the Son of God, even He who comes into the world.”
Marta sagte zu ihm: Ja, Herr, ich glaube, dass du der Christus bist, der Sohn Gottes, der in die Welt kommen soll.
When she had said this, she went away and called Mary her sister, saying secretly, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.”
Nach diesen Worten ging sie weg, rief heimlich ihre Schwester Maria und sagte zu ihr: Der Meister ist da und lässt dich rufen.
And when she heard it, she got up quickly and was coming to Him.
Als Maria das hörte, stand sie sofort auf und ging zu ihm.
Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha met Him.
Denn Jesus war noch nicht in das Dorf gekommen; er war noch dort, wo ihn Marta getroffen hatte.
Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and consoling her, when they saw that Mary got up quickly and went out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there.
Die Juden, die bei Maria im Haus waren und sie trösteten, sahen, dass sie plötzlich aufstand und hinausging. Da folgten sie ihr, weil sie meinten, sie gehe zum Grab, um dort zu weinen.
Therefore, when Mary came where Jesus was, she saw Him, and fell at His feet, saying to Him, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.”
Als Maria dorthin kam, wo Jesus war, und ihn sah, fiel sie ihm zu Füßen und sagte zu ihm: Herr, wärst du hier gewesen, dann wäre mein Bruder nicht gestorben.
When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, He was deeply moved in spirit and was troubled,
Als Jesus sah, wie sie weinte und wie auch die Juden weinten, die mit ihr gekommen waren, war er im Innersten erregt und erschüttert.
and said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to Him, “Lord, come and see.”
Er sagte: Wo habt ihr ihn bestattet? Sie sagten zu ihm: Herr, komm und sieh!
So the Jews were saying, “See how He loved him!”
Die Juden sagten: Seht, wie lieb er ihn hatte!
But some of them said, “Could not this man, who opened the eyes of the blind man, have kept this man also from dying?”
Einige aber sagten: Wenn er dem Blinden die Augen geöffnet hat, hätte er dann nicht auch verhindern können, dass dieser hier starb?
So Jesus, again being deeply moved within, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone was lying against it.
Da wurde Jesus wiederum innerlich erregt und er ging zum Grab. Es war eine Höhle, die mit einem Stein verschlossen war.
Jesus said, “Remove the stone.” Martha, the sister of the deceased, said to Him, “Lord, by this time there will be a stench, for he has been dead four days.”
Jesus sagte: Nehmt den Stein weg! Marta, die Schwester des Verstorbenen, sagte zu ihm: Herr, er riecht aber schon, denn es ist bereits der vierte Tag.
Jesus said to her, “Did I not say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?”
Jesus sagte zu ihr: Habe ich dir nicht gesagt: Wenn du glaubst, wirst du die Herrlichkeit Gottes sehen?
So they removed the stone. Then Jesus raised His eyes, and said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me.
Da nahmen sie den Stein weg. Jesus aber erhob seine Augen und sprach: Vater, ich danke dir, dass du mich erhört hast.
“I knew that You always hear Me; but because of the people standing around I said it, so that they may believe that You sent Me.”
Ich wusste, dass du mich immer erhörst; aber wegen der Menge, die um mich herumsteht, habe ich es gesagt, damit sie glauben, dass du mich gesandt hast.
When He had said these things, He cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth.”
Nachdem er dies gesagt hatte, rief er mit lauter Stimme: Lazarus, komm heraus!
The man who had died came forth, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”
Da kam der Verstorbene heraus; seine Füße und Hände waren mit Binden umwickelt und sein Gesicht war mit einem Schweißtuch verhüllt. Jesus sagte zu ihnen: Löst ihm die Binden und lasst ihn weggehen!
Therefore many of the Jews who came to Mary, and saw what He had done, believed in Him.
Viele der Juden, die zu Maria gekommen waren und gesehen hatten, was Jesus getan hatte, kamen zum Glauben an ihn.
But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them the things which Jesus had done.
Aber einige von ihnen gingen zu den Pharisäern und sagten ihnen, was er getan hatte.
Conspiracy to Kill Jesus
Therefore the chief priests and the Pharisees convened a council, and were saying, “What are we doing? For this man is performing many signs.
Da beriefen die Hohepriester und die Pharisäer eine Versammlung des Hohen Rates ein. Sie sagten: Was sollen wir tun? Dieser Mensch tut viele Zeichen.
“If we let Him go on like this, all men will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.”

But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all,
Einer von ihnen, Kajaphas, der Hohepriester jenes Jahres, sagte zu ihnen: Ihr versteht nichts.
nor do you take into account that it is expedient for you that one man die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish.”
Ihr bedenkt nicht, dass es besser für euch ist, wenn ein einziger Mensch für das Volk stirbt, als wenn das ganze Volk zugrunde geht.
Now he did not say this on his own initiative, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation,
Das sagte er nicht aus sich selbst; sondern weil er der Hohepriester jenes Jahres war, sagte er aus prophetischer Eingebung, dass Jesus für das Volk sterben werde.
and not for the nation only, but in order that He might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.
Aber er sollte nicht nur für das Volk sterben, sondern auch, um die versprengten Kinder Gottes wieder zu sammeln.
So from that day on they planned together to kill Him.
Von diesem Tag an waren sie entschlossen, ihn zu töten.
Therefore Jesus no longer continued to walk publicly among the Jews, but went away from there to the country near the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim; and there He stayed with the disciples.
Jesus ging von nun an nicht mehr öffentlich unter den Juden umher, sondern zog sich von dort in die Gegend nahe der Wüste zurück, zu einer Stadt namens Efraim. Dort blieb er mit seinen Jüngern.
Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the Passover to purify themselves.
Das Paschafest der Juden war nahe und viele zogen schon vor dem Paschafest aus dem ganzen Land nach Jerusalem hinauf, um sich zu heiligen.
So they were seeking for Jesus, and were saying to one another as they stood in the temple, “What do you think; that He will not come to the feast at all?”
Sie suchten Jesus und sagten zueinander, während sie im Tempel zusammenstanden: Was meint ihr? Er wird wohl kaum zum Fest kommen.
Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where He was, he was to report it, so that they might seize Him.
Die Hohepriester und die Pharisäer hatten nämlich angeordnet, wenn jemand wisse, wo er sich aufhält, solle er es melden, damit sie ihn festnehmen könnten.
