New American Standard Bible

English Standard Version

  • Jesus Teaches at the Feast

After these things Jesus was walking in Galilee, for He was unwilling to walk in Judea because the Jews were seeking to kill Him.
  • Jesus at the Feast of Booths

After this Jesus went about in Galilee. He would not go about in Judea, because the Jewsa were seeking to kill him.
  • Now the feast of the Jews, the Feast of Booths, was near.
  • Now the Jews’ Feast of Booths was at hand.
  • Therefore His brothers said to Him, “Leave here and go into Judea, so that Your disciples also may see Your works which You are doing.
  • So his brothersb said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples also may see the works you are doing.
  • “For no one does anything in secret when he himself seeks to be known publicly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.”
  • For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.”
  • For not even His brothers were believing in Him.
  • For not even his brothers believed in him.
  • So Jesus said to them, “My time is not yet here, but your time is always opportune.
  • Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always here.
  • “The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify of it, that its deeds are evil.
  • The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify about it that its works are evil.
  • “Go up to the feast yourselves; I do not go up to this feast because My time has not yet fully come.”
  • You go up to the feast. I am notc going up to this feast, for my time has not yet fully come.”
  • Having said these things to them, He stayed in Galilee.
  • After saying this, he remained in Galilee.
  • But when His brothers had gone up to the feast, then He Himself also went up, not publicly, but as if, in secret.
  • But after his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly but in private.
  • So the Jews were seeking Him at the feast and were saying, “Where is He?”
  • The Jews were looking for him at the feast, and saying, “Where is he?”
  • There was much grumbling among the crowds concerning Him; some were saying, “He is a good man”; others were saying, “No, on the contrary, He leads the people astray.”
  • And there was much muttering about him among the people. While some said, “He is a good man,” others said, “No, he is leading the people astray.”
  • Yet no one was speaking openly of Him for fear of the Jews.
  • Yet for fear of the Jews no one spoke openly of him.
  • But when it was now the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and began to teach.
  • About the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and began teaching.
  • The Jews then were astonished, saying, “How has this man become learned, having never been educated?”
  • The Jews therefore marveled, saying, “How is it that this man has learning,d when he has never studied?”
  • So Jesus answered them and said, “My teaching is not Mine, but His who sent Me.
  • So Jesus answered them, “My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me.
  • “If anyone is willing to do His will, he will know of the teaching, whether it is of God or whether I speak from Myself.
  • If anyone’s will is to do God’se will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority.
  • “He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who is seeking the glory of the One who sent Him, He is true, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.
  • The one who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and in him there is no falsehood.
  • “Did not Moses give you the Law, and yet none of you carries out the Law? Why do you seek to kill Me?”
  • Has not Moses given you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why do you seek to kill me?”
  • The crowd answered, “You have a demon! Who seeks to kill You?”
  • The crowd answered, “You have a demon! Who is seeking to kill you?”
  • Jesus answered them, “I did one deed, and you all marvel.
  • Jesus answered them, “I did one work, and you all marvel at it.
  • “For this reason Moses has given you circumcision (not because it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and on the Sabbath you circumcise a man.
  • Moses gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath.
  • “If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath so that the Law of Moses will not be broken, are you angry with Me because I made an entire man well on the Sabbath?
  • If on the Sabbath a man receives circumcision, so that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because on the Sabbath I made a man’s whole body well?
  • “Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.”
  • Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.”
  • So some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, “Is this not the man whom they are seeking to kill?
  • Can This Be the Christ?

Some of the people of Jerusalem therefore said, “Is not this the man whom they seek to kill?
  • “Look, He is speaking publicly, and they are saying nothing to Him. The rulers do not really know that this is the Christ, do they?
  • And here he is, speaking openly, and they say nothing to him! Can it be that the authorities really know that this is the Christ?
  • “However, we know where this man is from; but whenever the Christ may come, no one knows where He is from.”
  • But we know where this man comes from, and when the Christ appears, no one will know where he comes from.”
  • Then Jesus cried out in the temple, teaching and saying, “You both know Me and know where I am from; and I have not come of Myself, but He who sent Me is true, whom you do not know.
  • So Jesus proclaimed, as he taught in the temple, “You know me, and you know where I come from. But I have not come of my own accord. He who sent me is true, and him you do not know.
  • “I know Him, because I am from Him, and He sent Me.”
  • I know him, for I come from him, and he sent me.”
  • So they were seeking to seize Him; and no man laid his hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come.
  • So they were seeking to arrest him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come.
  • But many of the crowd believed in Him; and they were saying, “When the Christ comes, He will not perform more signs than those which this man has, will He?”
  • Yet many of the people believed in him. They said, “When the Christ appears, will he do more signs than this man has done?”
  • The Pharisees heard the crowd muttering these things about Him, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent officers to seize Him.
  • Officers Sent to Arrest Jesus

The Pharisees heard the crowd muttering these things about him, and the chief priests and Pharisees sent officers to arrest him.
  • Therefore Jesus said, “For a little while longer I am with you, then I go to Him who sent Me.
  • Jesus then said, “I will be with you a little longer, and then I am going to him who sent me.
  • “You will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come.”
  • You will seek me and you will not find me. Where I am you cannot come.”
  • The Jews then said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we will not find Him? He is not intending to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks, is He?
  • The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we will not find him? Does he intend to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks?
  • “What is this statement that He said, ‘You will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come’?”
  • What does he mean by saying, ‘You will seek me and you will not find me,’ and, ‘Where I am you cannot come’?”
  • Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.
  • Rivers of Living Water

On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink.
  • “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’”
  • Whoever believes in me, asf the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’”
  • But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
  • Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

  • Division of People over Jesus

Some of the people therefore, when they heard these words, were saying, “This certainly is the Prophet.”
  • Division Among the People

When they heard these words, some of the people said, “This really is the Prophet.”
  • Others were saying, “This is the Christ.” Still others were saying, “Surely the Christ is not going to come from Galilee, is He?
  • Others said, “This is the Christ.” But some said, “Is the Christ to come from Galilee?
  • “Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the descendants of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?”
  • Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the offspring of David, and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David was?”
  • So a division occurred in the crowd because of Him.
  • So there was a division among the people over him.
  • Some of them wanted to seize Him, but no one laid hands on Him.
  • Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.
  • The officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, “Why did you not bring Him?”
  • The officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why did you not bring him?”
  • The officers answered, “Never has a man spoken the way this man speaks.”
  • The officers answered, “No one ever spoke like this man!”
  • The Pharisees then answered them, “You have not also been led astray, have you?
  • The Pharisees answered them, “Have you also been deceived?
  • “No one of the rulers or Pharisees has believed in Him, has he?
  • Have any of the authorities or the Pharisees believed in him?
  • “But this crowd which does not know the Law is accursed.”
  • But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed.”
  • Nicodemus (he who came to Him before, being one of them) said to them,
  • Nicodemus, who had gone to him before, and who was one of them, said to them,
  • “Our Law does not judge a man unless it first hears from him and knows what he is doing, does it?”
  • “Does our law judge a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does?”
  • They answered him, “You are not also from Galilee, are you? Search, and see that no prophet arises out of Galilee.”
  • They replied, “Are you from Galilee too? Search and see that no prophet arises from Galilee.”
  • [Everyone went to his home.
