Israel’s History after the Exodus
These are the words which Moses spoke to all Israel across the Jordan in the wilderness, in the Arabah opposite Suph, between Paran and Tophel and Laban and Hazeroth and Dizahab.

Das sind die Worte, die Mose vor ganz Israel gesprochen hat. Er sprach sie jenseits des Jordan, in der Wüste, in der Araba, gegenüber Suf, zwischen Paran und Tofel, Laban, Hazerot und Di-Sahab.
It is eleven days’ journey from Horeb by the way of Mount Seir to Kadesh-barnea.
Elf Tage sind es vom Horeb auf dem Weg zum Gebirge Seïr bis nach Kadesch-Barnea.
In the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, Moses spoke to the children of Israel, according to all that the LORD had commanded him to give to them,
Es war im vierzigsten Jahr, im elften Monat, am ersten Tag des Monats. Mose sagte den Israeliten genau das, was ihm der HERR für sie aufgetragen hatte.
after he had defeated Sihon the king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, who lived in Ashtaroth and Edrei.
Nachdem er Sihon, den König der Amoriter, der in Heschbon seinen Sitz hatte, und bei Edreï auch Og, den König des Baschan, der in Aschtarot seinen Sitz hatte, geschlagen hatte,
Across the Jordan in the land of Moab, Moses undertook to expound this law, saying,
begann Mose jenseits des Jordan im Land Moab, diese Weisung bindend zu machen. Er sagte:
“The LORD our God spoke to us at Horeb, saying, ‘You have stayed long enough at this mountain.
Der HERR, unser Gott, hat am Horeb zu uns gesagt: Ihr habt euch lange genug an diesem Berg aufgehalten.
‘Turn and set your journey, and go to the hill country of the Amorites, and to all their neighbors in the Arabah, in the hill country and in the lowland and in the Negev and by the seacoast, the land of the Canaanites, and Lebanon, as far as the great river, the river Euphrates.
Nun wendet euch dem Bergland der Amoriter zu, brecht auf und zieht hinauf! Zieht aus gegen alle seine Bewohner in der Araba, auf dem Gebirge, in der Schefela, im Negeb und an der Meeresküste! Zieht in das Land der Kanaaniter und in das Gebiet des Libanon, bis an den großen Strom, den Eufrat!
‘See, I have placed the land before you; go in and possess the land which the LORD swore to give to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to them and their descendants after them.’
Siehe, hiermit liefere ich euch das Land aus. Zieht hinein und nehmt es in Besitz, das Land, von dem ihr wisst: Der HERR hat euren Vätern Abraham, Isaak und Jakob geschworen, es ihnen und später ihren Nachkommen zu geben.
“I spoke to you at that time, saying, ‘I am not able to bear the burden of you alone.
Damals habe ich euch gesagt: Ich allein kann euch nicht tragen.
‘The LORD your God has multiplied you, and behold, you are this day like the stars of heaven in number.
Der HERR, euer Gott, hat euch zahlreich gemacht. Ja, ihr seid heute schon so zahlreich wie die Sterne am Himmel.
‘May the LORD, the God of your fathers, increase you a thousand-fold more than you are and bless you, just as He has promised you!
Und der HERR, der Gott eurer Väter, lasse eure Zahl auf das Tausendfache wachsen und segne euch, wie er es euch versprochen hat.
‘How can I alone bear the load and burden of you and your strife?
Wie soll ich allein euch tragen: eure Bürde, eure Last, eure Rechtshändel?
‘Choose wise and discerning and experienced men from your tribes, and I will appoint them as your heads.’
Schlagt für jeden eurer Stämme weise, gebildete und wohlbekannte Männer vor, damit ich sie als eure Oberhäupter einsetze.
“You answered me and said, ‘The thing which you have said to do is good.’
Ihr habt mir geantwortet und gesagt: Das ist ein guter Vorschlag, den du gemacht hast. Er soll ausgeführt werden.
“So I took the heads of your tribes, wise and experienced men, and appointed them heads over you, leaders of thousands and of hundreds, of fifties and of tens, and officers for your tribes.
Also habe ich die Häupter eurer Stämme, weise und wohlbekannte Männer, genommen und sie zu Häuptern über euch ernannt: als Anführer für je tausend, Anführer für je hundert, Anführer für je fünfzig, Anführer für je zehn, und als Listenführer, für jeden eurer Stämme.
“Then I charged your judges at that time, saying, ‘Hear the cases between your fellow countrymen, and judge righteously between a man and his fellow countryman, or the alien who is with him.
Damals habe ich eure Richter verpflichtet: Lasst jeden Streit zwischen euren Brüdern vor euch kommen! Entscheidet gerecht, sei es der Streit eines Mannes mit einem Bruder oder mit einem Fremden!
‘You shall not show partiality in judgment; you shall hear the small and the great alike. You shall not fear man, for the judgment is God’s. The case that is too hard for you, you shall bring to me, and I will hear it.’
Kennt vor Gericht kein Ansehen der Person! Klein wie Groß hört an! Fürchtet euch nicht vor angesehenen Leuten; denn das Gericht hat mit Gott zu tun. Und ist euch eine Sache zu schwierig, legt sie mir vor; dann werde ich sie anhören.
“I commanded you at that time all the things that you should do.
Damals habe ich euch auf alle Regeln verpflichtet, an die ihr euch dabei halten sollt.
“Then we set out from Horeb, and went through all that great and terrible wilderness which you saw on the way to the hill country of the Amorites, just as the LORD our God had commanded us; and we came to Kadesh-barnea.
Wir brachen vom Horeb auf und wanderten durch die gesamte Wüste, die große und Furcht erregende, dieselbe, die ihr schon gesehen hattet, diesmal auf dem Weg zum Amoriterbergland, wie es uns der HERR, unser Gott, befohlen hatte. Wir kamen bis Kadesch-Barnea.
“I said to you, ‘You have come to the hill country of the Amorites which the LORD our God is about to give us.
Dort sagte ich zu euch: Nun seid ihr am Bergland der Amoriter angekommen, das der HERR, unser Gott, uns gibt.
‘See, the LORD your God has placed the land before you; go up, take possession, as the LORD, the God of your fathers, has spoken to you. Do not fear or be dismayed.’
Sieh, der HERR, dein Gott, hat dir das Land ausgeliefert. Zieh hinauf und nimm es in Besitz, wie der HERR, der Gott deiner Väter, es dir versprochen hat. Fürchte dich nicht und hab keine Angst!
“Then all of you approached me and said, ‘Let us send men before us, that they may search out the land for us, and bring back to us word of the way by which we should go up and the cities which we shall enter.’
Da seid ihr zu mir gekommen, ihr alle, und habt gesagt: Wir wollen einige Männer vorausschicken. Sie sollen uns das Land auskundschaften und uns Bericht erstatten über den Weg, den wir hinaufziehen, und über die Städte, auf die wir treffen werden.
“The thing pleased me and I took twelve of your men, one man for each tribe.
Der Vorschlag erschien mir gut. Ich wählte unter euch zwölf Männer aus, für jeden Stamm einen.
“They turned and went up into the hill country, and came to the valley of Eshcol and spied it out.
Sie wendeten sich dem Bergland zu, zogen hinauf, gelangten bis zum Traubental und erkundeten das Land.
“Then they took some of the fruit of the land in their hands and brought it down to us; and they brought us back a report and said, ‘It is a good land which the LORD our God is about to give us.’
Sie pflückten einige von den Früchten des Landes, brachten sie zu uns herab und erstatteten uns Bericht. Sie sagten: Prächtig ist das Land, das der HERR, unser Gott, uns gibt.
“Yet you were not willing to go up, but rebelled against the command of the LORD your God;
Doch ihr habt euch geweigert hinaufzuziehen. Ihr habt euch dem Befehl des HERRN, eures Gottes, widersetzt
and you grumbled in your tents and said, ‘Because the LORD hates us, He has brought us out of the land of Egypt to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites to destroy us.
und habt in euren Zelten den HERRN verleumdet und gesagt: Weil er uns hasst, hat er uns aus Ägypten geführt. Er will uns in die Hand der Amoriter geben, um uns zu vernichten.
‘Where can we go up? Our brethren have made our hearts melt, saying, “The people are bigger and taller than we; the cities are large and fortified to heaven. And besides, we saw the sons of the Anakim there.”’
Wohin sollen wir ziehen? Unsere Brüder haben uns das Herz zerschmolzen, als sie berichteten: Ein Volk, größer und höher gewachsen als wir, Städte, groß, mit himmelhohen Mauern. Sogar Anakiter haben wir dort gesehen.
“Then I said to you, ‘Do not be shocked, nor fear them.
Da habe ich zu euch gesagt: Ihr dürft nicht vor ihnen zurückweichen und dürft euch nicht vor ihnen fürchten.
‘The LORD your God who goes before you will Himself fight on your behalf, just as He did for you in Egypt before your eyes,
Der HERR, euer Gott, der euch vorangeht, er wird für euch kämpfen, genauso, wie er vor euren Augen in Ägypten auf eurer Seite gekämpft hat.
and in the wilderness where you saw how the LORD your God carried you, just as a man carries his son, in all the way which you have walked until you came to this place.’
Das Gleiche tat er in der Wüste, die du gesehen hast. Da hat der HERR, dein Gott, dich auf dem ganzen Weg, den ihr gewandert seid, getragen, wie ein Mann sein Kind trägt, bis ihr an diesen Ort kamt.
“But for all this, you did not trust the LORD your God,
Trotzdem habt ihr nicht an den HERRN, euren Gott, geglaubt,
who goes before you on your way, to seek out a place for you to encamp, in fire by night and cloud by day, to show you the way in which you should go.
der euch auf dem Weg vorangeht, um euch die Stelle für das Lager zu suchen. Bei Nacht geht er im Feuer voran, um euch den Weg zu zeigen, auf dem ihr gehen sollt, bei Tag in der Wolke.
“Then the LORD heard the sound of your words, and He was angry and took an oath, saying,
Der HERR hörte eure Stimme, eure Worte. Er wurde unwillig und schwor:
‘Not one of these men, this evil generation, shall see the good land which I swore to give your fathers,
Kein Einziger von diesen Männern, von dieser verdorbenen Generation, soll das prächtige Land sehen, von dem ihr wisst: Ich habe geschworen, es euren Vätern zu geben.
except Caleb the son of Jephunneh; he shall see it, and to him and to his sons I will give the land on which he has set foot, because he has followed the LORD fully.’
Nur Kaleb, der Sohn Jefunnes, er wird es sehen. Ihm und seinen Söhnen werde ich das Land geben, das er betreten hat. Denn er ist dem HERRN ganz und gar nachgefolgt.
“The LORD was angry with me also on your account, saying, ‘Not even you shall enter there.
Auch mir grollte der HERR euretwegen und sagte: Auch du sollst nicht in das Land hineinkommen.
‘Joshua the son of Nun, who stands before you, he shall enter there; encourage him, for he will cause Israel to inherit it.
Josua, der Sohn Nuns, dein Gehilfe, er wird hineinkommen. Ihm übertrage Vollmacht: Er soll das Land an Israel als Erbbesitz verteilen.
‘Moreover, your little ones who you said would become a prey, and your sons, who this day have no knowledge of good or evil, shall enter there, and I will give it to them and they shall possess it.
Und eure Kleinen, von denen ihr sagt: Zur Beute werden sie!, und eure Kinder, die heute noch nichts von Gut und Böse wissen, sie werden in das Land hineinkommen. Ihnen gebe ich es und sie nehmen es dann auch in Besitz.
‘But as for you, turn around and set out for the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.’
Ihr aber, wendet euch zur Wüste, brecht auf und nehmt den Weg zum Roten Meer!
“Then you said to me, ‘We have sinned against the LORD; we will indeed go up and fight, just as the LORD our God commanded us.’ And every man of you girded on his weapons of war, and regarded it as easy to go up into the hill country.
Ihr habt mir darauf erwidert und gesagt: Wir haben vor dem HERRN gesündigt. Doch jetzt wollen wir hinaufziehen und kämpfen, genauso, wie es uns der HERR, unser Gott, befohlen hat. Und jeder legte die Waffen an und gürtete sich, um ins Bergland zu ziehen.
“And the LORD said to me, ‘Say to them, “Do not go up nor fight, for I am not among you; otherwise you will be defeated before your enemies.”’
Doch der HERR sprach zu mir: Sag ihnen: Ihr sollt nicht hinaufziehen und nicht kämpfen; denn ich bin nicht in eurer Mitte. Ihr sollt nicht geschlagen daliegen vor euren Feinden.
“So I spoke to you, but you would not listen. Instead you rebelled against the command of the LORD, and acted presumptuously and went up into the hill country.
Ich habe euch zugeredet, doch ihr habt nicht gehört. Ihr habt euch dem Befehl des HERRN widersetzt. In eurer Vermessenheit seid ihr ins Bergland gezogen.
“The Amorites who lived in that hill country came out against you and chased you as bees do, and crushed you from Seir to Hormah.
Da rückten die Amoriter, die dort im Bergland wohnen, gegen euch aus. Sie verfolgten euch wie ein Bienenschwarm und versprengten euch von Seïr bis nach Horma hin.
“Then you returned and wept before the LORD; but the LORD did not listen to your voice nor give ear to you.
Als ihr zurückkamt, weintet ihr vor dem HERRN. Doch der HERR hat auf eure Stimme nicht gehört und hatte kein Ohr mehr für euch.
