Or do you not know, brethren (for I am speaking to those who know the law), that the law has jurisdiction over a person as long as he lives?

Wisst ihr denn nicht, Brüder und Schwestern — ich rede doch zu Leuten, die das Gesetz kennen — , dass das Gesetz für einen Menschen nur Geltung hat, solange er lebt?
For the married woman is bound by law to her husband while he is living; but if her husband dies, she is released from the law concerning the husband.
So ist die Ehefrau durch das Gesetz an ihren Mann gebunden, solange er lebt; wenn ihr Mann aber stirbt, ist sie frei von dem Gesetz, das die Frau an den Mann bindet.
So then, if while her husband is living she is joined to another man, she shall be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from the law, so that she is not an adulteress though she is joined to another man.
Wenn sie darum zu Lebzeiten des Mannes einem anderen gehört, wird sie Ehebrecherin genannt; ist aber der Mann gestorben, dann ist sie frei vom Gesetz und wird nicht zur Ehebrecherin, wenn sie einem anderen gehört.
Therefore, my brethren, you also were made to die to the Law through the body of Christ, so that you might be joined to another, to Him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God.
Ebenso seid auch ihr, meine Brüder und Schwestern, durch das Sterben Christi tot für das Gesetz, sodass ihr einem anderen gehört, dem, der von den Toten auferweckt wurde, damit wir Gott Frucht bringen.
For while we were in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were aroused by the Law, were at work in the members of our body to bear fruit for death.
Denn als wir noch dem Fleisch verfallen waren, wirkten sich die Leidenschaften der Sünden, die durch das Gesetz hervorgerufen wurden, so in unseren Gliedern aus, dass wir dem Tod Frucht brachten.
But now we have been released from the Law, having died to that by which we were bound, so that we serve in newness of the Spirit and not in oldness of the letter.
Jetzt aber sind wir frei geworden vom Gesetz, dem gestorben, woran wir gebunden waren, sodass wir in der neuen Wirklichkeit des Geistes dienen, nicht mehr in der alten Wirklichkeit des Buchstabens.
What shall we say then? Is the Law sin? May it never be! On the contrary, I would not have come to know sin except through the Law; for I would not have known about coveting if the Law had not said, “YOU SHALL NOT COVET.”
Was sollen wir nun sagen? Ist das Gesetz Sünde? Keineswegs! Jedoch habe ich die Sünde nur durch das Gesetz erkannt. Ich hätte ja von der Begierde nichts gewusst, wenn nicht das Gesetz gesagt hätte: Du sollst nicht begehren.
But sin, taking opportunity through the commandment, produced in me coveting of every kind; for apart from the Law sin is dead.
Die Sünde aber ergriff die Gelegenheit, die ihr durch das Gebot gegeben war, und bewirkte in mir alle Begierde, denn ohne das Gesetz war die Sünde tot.
I was once alive apart from the Law; but when the commandment came, sin became alive and I died;
Ich aber lebte einst ohne das Gesetz; aber als das Gebot kam, wurde die Sünde lebendig,
and this commandment, which was to result in life, proved to result in death for me;
ich dagegen starb und musste erfahren, dass dieses Gebot, das zum Leben führen sollte, mir den Tod brachte.
for sin, taking an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me.
Denn nachdem die Sünde die Gelegenheit ergriffen hatte, die ihr durch das Gebot gegeben war, täuschte und tötete sie mich durch das Gebot.
So then, the Law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.
Deshalb ist das Gesetz heilig und das Gebot ist heilig, gerecht und gut.
Therefore did that which is good become a cause of death for me? May it never be! Rather it was sin, in order that it might be shown to be sin by effecting my death through that which is good, so that through the commandment sin would become utterly sinful.
Ist dann etwa das Gute mir zum Tod geworden? Keineswegs! Sondern die Sünde verursachte, damit sie als Sünde offenbar werde, mir durch das Gute den Tod; denn durch das Gebot sollte die Sünde sich in ihrem ganzen Ausmaß als Sünde erweisen.
The Conflict of Two Natures
For we know that the Law is spiritual, but I am of flesh, sold into bondage to sin.
Wir wissen nämlich, dass das Gesetz selbst vom Geist bestimmt ist; ich aber bin fleischlich, das heißt: verkauft unter die Sünde.
For what I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate.
Denn was ich bewirke, begreife ich nicht: Ich tue nicht das, was ich will, sondern das, was ich hasse.
But if I do the very thing I do not want to do, I agree with the Law, confessing that the Law is good.
Wenn ich aber das tue, was ich nicht will, erkenne ich an, dass das Gesetz gut ist.
So now, no longer am I the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me.
Dann aber bin nicht mehr ich es, der dies bewirkt, sondern die in mir wohnende Sünde.
For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not.
Ich weiß nämlich, dass in mir, das heißt in meinem Fleisch, nichts Gutes wohnt: Das Wollen ist bei mir vorhanden, aber ich vermag das Gute nicht zu verwirklichen.
For the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want.
Denn ich tue nicht das Gute, das ich will, sondern das Böse, das ich nicht will, das vollbringe ich.
But if I am doing the very thing I do not want, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me.
Wenn ich aber das tue, was ich nicht will, dann bin nicht mehr ich es, der es bewirkt, sondern die in mir wohnende Sünde.
I find then the principle that evil is present in me, the one who wants to do good.
Ich stoße also auf das Gesetz, dass in mir das Böse vorhanden ist, obwohl ich das Gute tun will.
For I joyfully concur with the law of God in the inner man,
Denn in meinem Innern freue ich mich am Gesetz Gottes,
but I see a different law in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin which is in my members.
ich sehe aber ein anderes Gesetz in meinen Gliedern, das mit dem Gesetz meiner Vernunft im Streit liegt und mich gefangen hält im Gesetz der Sünde, das in meinen Gliedern herrscht.
Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death?
Ich elender Mensch! Wer wird mich aus diesem dem Tod verfallenen Leib erretten?
Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin.
Dank aber sei Gott durch Jesus Christus, unseren Herrn! Es ergibt sich also, dass ich mit meiner Vernunft dem Gesetz Gottes diene, mit dem Fleisch aber dem Gesetz der Sünde.
