Then Joshua summoned the Reubenites and the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh,
Josua rief die Männer von Ruben, Gad und dem halben Stamm Manasse zu sich
and said to them, “You have kept all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, and have listened to my voice in all that I commanded you.
und sagte zu ihnen: »Ihr habt alles getan, was euch Mose, der Diener des HERRN, befohlen hat, und auch mir seid ihr immer gehorsam gewesen.
“You have not forsaken your brothers these many days to this day, but have kept the charge of the commandment of the LORD your God.
Bis heute habt ihr eure Bruderstämme nicht im Stich gelassen. Während dieser langen Zeit habt ihr genau das getan, was der HERR von euch wollte.
“And now the LORD your God has given rest to your brothers, as He spoke to them; therefore turn now and go to your tents, to the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of the LORD gave you beyond the Jordan.
Der HERR, euer Gott, hat euren Bruderstämmen das versprochene Land gegeben, in dem sie jetzt in Frieden leben. Kehrt nun zurück in euer eigenes Land auf der anderen Seite des Jordan, das euch Mose, der Diener des HERRN, dort gegeben hat.
“Only be very careful to observe the commandment and the law which Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, to love the LORD your God and walk in all His ways and keep His commandments and hold fast to Him and serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul.”
Aber achtet darauf, dass ihr tut, was euch Mose im Auftrag des HERRN befohlen hat: Liebt den HERRN, euren Gott! Lebt so, wie es ihm gefällt, und richtet euch nach seinen Geboten! Haltet ihm die Treue und dient ihm aufrichtig und von ganzem Herzen!«
So Joshua blessed them and sent them away, and they went to their tents.
Dann segnete Josua die Männer, und sie machten sich auf den Heimweg.
Now to the one half-tribe of Manasseh Moses had given a possession in Bashan, but to the other half Joshua gave a possession among their brothers westward beyond the Jordan. So when Joshua sent them away to their tents, he blessed them,
Die eine Hälfte des Stammes Manasse hatte von Mose östlich des Jordan im Land Baschan ihr Gebiet bekommen. Die andere Hälfte Manasses erhielt von Josua westlich des Jordan ihr Land, wo sich auch die übrigen neun Stämme niedergelassen hatten. Als Josua die Männer nun entließ, segnete er sie
and said to them, “Return to your tents with great riches and with very much livestock, with silver, gold, bronze, iron, and with very many clothes; divide the spoil of your enemies with your brothers.”
und sagte: »Ihr kommt mit reichen Schätzen nach Hause: mit großen Viehherden, mit Gold und Silber, Bronze und Eisen und mit vielen Kleidern. Teilt diese Kriegsbeute mit denen, die zu Hause geblieben sind!«
The sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh returned home and departed from the sons of Israel at Shiloh which is in the land of Canaan, to go to the land of Gilead, to the land of their possession which they had possessed, according to the command of the LORD through Moses.
Die Männer von Ruben, Gad und dem halben Stamm Manasse verließen die übrigen Israeliten bei Silo im Land Kanaan und zogen in Richtung des Landes Gilead, das östlich des Jordan liegt. Dort besaßen sie ihre eigenen Gebiete, in denen sich ihre Stämme angesiedelt hatten, wie es der HERR durch Mose befohlen hatte.
The Offensive Altar
When they came to the region of the Jordan which is in the land of Canaan, the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh built an altar there by the Jordan, a large altar in appearance.
Als die Männer das Westufer des Jordan, das noch im Land Kanaan lag, erreichten, bauten sie dort einen großen Altar.
And the sons of Israel heard it said, “Behold, the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh have built an altar at the frontier of the land of Canaan, in the region of the Jordan, on the side belonging to the sons of Israel.”
Bald schon verbreitete sich unter den übrigen Israeliten die Nachricht: »Die Stämme Ruben, Gad und der halbe Stamm Manasse haben sich doch tatsächlich unten im Jordantal einen Altar errichtet; er steht noch auf der Seite, die zu unserem Land gehört!«
When the sons of Israel heard of it, the whole congregation of the sons of Israel gathered themselves at Shiloh to go up against them in war.
Da versammelten sie sich in Silo, um gemeinsam gegen die Oststämme Krieg zu führen.
Then the sons of Israel sent to the sons of Reuben and to the sons of Gad and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, into the land of Gilead, Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest,
Sie schickten Pinhas, den Sohn des Priesters Eleasar, ins Land Gilead zu den Stämmen Ruben, Gad und Manasse.
and with him ten chiefs, one chief for each father’s household from each of the tribes of Israel; and each one of them was the head of his father’s household among the thousands of Israel.
Ihn begleiteten zehn Männer, aus jedem der zehn Stämme einer. Jeder von ihnen war das Oberhaupt einer ganzen Sippe.
They came to the sons of Reuben and to the sons of Gad and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, to the land of Gilead, and they spoke with them saying,
In Gilead angekommen, stellten sie die Oststämme zur Rede:
“Thus says the whole congregation of the LORD, ‘What is this unfaithful act which you have committed against the God of Israel, turning away from following the LORD this day, by building yourselves an altar, to rebel against the LORD this day?
»Die ganze Gemeinde des HERRN fragt euch, warum ihr dem Gott Israels die Treue gebrochen habt. Warum wendet ihr euch vom HERRN ab? Was für einen Altar habt ihr euch da gebaut? Wollt ihr euch damit etwa gegen den HERRN auflehnen?
‘Is not the iniquity of Peor enough for us, from which we have not cleansed ourselves to this day, although a plague came on the congregation of the LORD,
Reicht es denn nicht, dass wir uns damals mit dem Götzen Peor schuldig gemacht haben? Der HERR hat unser Volk deswegen schon schwer bestraft, wir leiden bis heute noch unter den Folgen!
that you must turn away this day from following the LORD? If you rebel against the LORD today, He will be angry with the whole congregation of Israel tomorrow.
Und was tut ihr? Ihr wendet euch schon wieder vom HERRN ab! Wenn ihr euch gegen ihn auflehnt, wird sich sein Zorn bald gegen die ganze Gemeinschaft der Israeliten richten!
‘If, however, the land of your possession is unclean, then cross into the land of the possession of the LORD, where the LORD’S tabernacle stands, and take possession among us. Only do not rebel against the LORD, or rebel against us by building an altar for yourselves, besides the altar of the LORD our God.
Wenn ihr meint, dass euer Land unrein ist, dann kommt doch zu uns herüber! Siedelt euch bei uns an in dem Land, das dem HERRN gehört und wo sein heiliges Zelt steht. Nur lehnt euch nicht gegen den HERRN auf! Und auch nicht gegen uns! Ihr dürft keinen anderen Altar haben als den des HERRN, unseres Gottes.
‘Did not Achan the son of Zerah act unfaithfully in the things under the ban, and wrath fall on all the congregation of Israel? And that man did not perish alone in his iniquity.’”
Denkt daran, was mit Achan, dem Sohn von Serach, geschah! Als er etwas von der Beute stahl, die dem Herrn allein gehörte, da bestrafte Gott die ganze Gemeinschaft der Israeliten. Achans Sünde hat nicht nur ihn selbst, sondern auch viele andere das Leben gekostet!«
Then the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh answered and spoke to the heads of the families of Israel.
Die Männer von Ruben, Gad und dem halben Stamm Manasse antworteten den Abgesandten der Israeliten:
“The Mighty One, God, the LORD, the Mighty One, God, the LORD! He knows, and may Israel itself know. If it was in rebellion, or if in an unfaithful act against the LORD do not save us this day!
»Gott, der HERR, ist der einzige und wahre Gott! Er weiß es, und Israel soll es auch wissen: Wir sind dem HERRN nicht untreu geworden und lehnen uns nicht gegen ihn auf! Das schwören wir! Wenn wir lügen, dann tötet uns!
“If we have built us an altar to turn away from following the LORD, or if to offer a burnt offering or grain offering on it, or if to offer sacrifices of peace offerings on it, may the LORD Himself require it.
Wir haben den Altar nicht gebaut, um uns vom HERRN abzuwenden. Wir wollten auf ihm keine Opfer darbringen, weder Brandopfer noch Speiseopfer noch Friedensopfer. Sagen wir nicht die Wahrheit, dann soll der HERR uns zur Rechenschaft ziehen.
“But truly we have done this out of concern, for a reason, saying, ‘In time to come your sons may say to our sons, “What have you to do with the LORD, the God of Israel?
Aber es ist wahr: Wir haben es aus Sorge um unsere Nachkommen getan. Wir fürchteten, eure Kinder würden eines Tages unsere Kinder fragen: ›Was habt ihr Rubeniter und Gaditer denn schon mit dem HERRN, dem Gott Israels, zu schaffen?
“For the LORD has made the Jordan a border between us and you, you sons of Reuben and sons of Gad; you have no portion in the LORD.” So your sons may make our sons stop fearing the LORD.’
Schließlich hat er den Jordan als Grenze zwischen uns und euch gesetzt! Ihr habt keinen Anspruch darauf, dem HERRN zu dienen!‹ So würden eure Nachkommen unsere davon abbringen, den HERRN zu verehren.
“Therefore we said, ‘Let us build an altar, not for burnt offering or for sacrifice;
Darum haben wir diesen Altar gebaut. Nicht für Brandopfer oder Schlachtopfer,
rather it shall be a witness between us and you and between our generations after us, that we are to perform the service of the LORD before Him with our burnt offerings, and with our sacrifices and with our peace offerings, so that your sons will not say to our sons in time to come, “You have no portion in the LORD.”’
sondern als Denkmal für uns und für euch und die Generationen nach uns. Er soll uns daran erinnern, dem HERRN zu dienen und vor seinem Heiligtum unsere Opfer darzubringen: Brandopfer, Schlachtopfer und Friedensopfer. Dann können eure Nachkommen nicht zu unseren sagen: ›Ihr dürft dem HERRN nicht dienen.‹
“Therefore we said, ‘It shall also come about if they say this to us or to our generations in time to come, then we shall say, “See the copy of the altar of the LORD which our fathers made, not for burnt offering or for sacrifice; rather it is a witness between us and you.”’
Und wenn sie es eines Tages doch einmal behaupten, dann können unsere Kinder sagen: ›Seht euch diese Nachbildung vom Altar des HERRN an! Unsere Väter haben sie gemacht, nicht für Brand- oder Schlachtopfer, sondern um uns und euch daran zu erinnern, dass wir gemeinsam dem HERRN dienen sollen.‹
“Far be it from us that we should rebel against the LORD and turn away from following the LORD this day, by building an altar for burnt offering, for grain offering or for sacrifice, besides the altar of the LORD our God which is before His tabernacle.”
Niemals soll es so weit kommen, dass wir uns gegen den HERRN auflehnen und ihm den Rücken kehren. Wir haben den Altar nicht für Brandopfer, Speiseopfer oder Schlachtopfer gebaut. Nur auf dem Altar vor dem heiligen Zelt des HERRN, unseres Gottes, wollen wir unsere Opfer darbringen.«
So when Phinehas the priest and the leaders of the congregation, even the heads of the families of Israel who were with him, heard the words which the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad and the sons of Manasseh spoke, it pleased them.
Als der Priester Pinhas und die Sippenoberhäupter, die als Leiter der israelitischen Gemeinde nach Gilead gekommen waren, hörten, was die Männer von Ruben, Gad und dem halben Stamm Manasse vorbrachten, waren sie beruhigt.
And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said to the sons of Reuben and to the sons of Gad and to the sons of Manasseh, “Today we know that the LORD is in our midst, because you have not committed this unfaithful act against the LORD; now you have delivered the sons of Israel from the hand of the LORD.”
Pinhas, der Sohn des Priesters Eleasar, sagte zu den Oststämmen: »Nun wissen wir, dass der HERR weiter in unserer Mitte bleibt, denn ihr habt ihm nicht die Treue gebrochen. Ihr habt die Israeliten vor der Strafe des HERRN bewahrt.«
Then Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest and the leaders returned from the sons of Reuben and from the sons of Gad, from the land of Gilead to the land of Canaan, to the sons of Israel, and brought back word to them.
Dann ließen Pinhas und die israelitischen Führer die Stämme Ruben, Gad und den halben Stamm Manasse im Land Gilead zurück und machten sich auf den Weg ins Land Kanaan. Dort erzählten sie, was geschehen war.
The word pleased the sons of Israel, and the sons of Israel blessed God; and they did not speak of going up against them in war to destroy the land in which the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad were living.
Die Israeliten freuten sich und lobten Gott. Sie wollten nun nicht mehr in den Krieg ziehen, um das Land der Oststämme zu verwüsten.
