Israel Is Circumcised
Now it came about when all the kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan to the west, and all the kings of the Canaanites who were by the sea, heard how the LORD had dried up the waters of the Jordan before the sons of Israel until they had crossed, that their hearts melted, and there was no spirit in them any longer because of the sons of Israel.

Die Amoriter westlich des Jordan und die Kanaaniter am Mittelmeer hörten, dass der HERR den Jordan aufgestaut hatte, damit die Israeliten ans andere Ufer gelangen konnten. Da fuhr ihnen der Schreck in die Glieder, und sie waren vor Angst wie gelähmt.
At that time the LORD said to Joshua, “Make for yourself flint knives and circumcise again the sons of Israel the second time.”
Zu dieser Zeit gab der HERR Josua den Auftrag: »Fertige Messer aus Stein an und beschneide so wie früher alle männlichen Israeliten!«
So Joshua made himself flint knives and circumcised the sons of Israel at Gibeath-haaraloth.
Josua tat, was Gott ihm befohlen hatte. Am Hügel Aralot (»Beschneidungshügel«) wurden die Israeliten beschnitten.
This is the reason why Joshua circumcised them: all the people who came out of Egypt who were males, all the men of war, died in the wilderness along the way after they came out of Egypt.
Denn als das Volk Ägypten verließ, waren noch alle männlichen Israeliten beschnitten gewesen. Doch inzwischen lebte niemand mehr, der damals im wehrfähigen Alter gewesen war. Der HERR hatte ihnen geschworen: »Weil ihr nicht auf mich gehört habt, werdet ihr das reiche Land niemals sehen, das ich euren Vorfahren versprochen habe, das Land, in dem es selbst Milch und Honig im Überfluss gibt.« Israel musste deshalb vierzig Jahre in der Wüste verbringen, bis von dieser ersten Generation keiner mehr lebte. Während die Israeliten die Wüste durchzogen, hatten sie ihre neugeborenen Söhne nicht beschneiden lassen.
Their children whom He raised up in their place, Joshua circumcised; for they were uncircumcised, because they had not circumcised them along the way.
Nun aber wurden alle männlichen Nachkommen beschnitten, die Gott dem Volk in dieser Zeit geschenkt hatte.
Now when they had finished circumcising all the nation, they remained in their places in the camp until they were healed.
Das Volk blieb einige Zeit an seinem Lagerplatz, bis die Wunden der Beschnittenen verheilt waren.
Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.” So the name of that place is called Gilgal to this day.
Da sprach der HERR zu Josua: »Heute habe ich die Schande von euch abgewälzt, die seit Ägypten auf euch lastete.« Deshalb nennt man diesen Ort bis heute Gilgal (»abwälzen«).
While the sons of Israel camped at Gilgal they observed the Passover on the evening of the fourteenth day of the month on the desert plains of Jericho.
Bei Gilgal, in der Ebene von Jericho, feierten die Israeliten am 14. Tag des 1. Monats abends das Passahfest.
On the day after the Passover, on that very day, they ate some of the produce of the land, unleavened cakes and parched grain.
Am nächsten Tag aßen sie zum ersten Mal etwas aus ihrem neuen Land: Brot, das ohne Sauerteig gebacken war, und geröstetes Getreide.
The manna ceased on the day after they had eaten some of the produce of the land, so that the sons of Israel no longer had manna, but they ate some of the yield of the land of Canaan during that year.
Und genau an diesem ersten Tag nach dem Passah, an dem sie etwas vom Ertrag des Landes gegessen hatten, blieb das Manna aus. Von nun an ernährten sich die Israeliten nicht mehr vom Manna, sondern vom Ertrag des Landes Kanaan.
Now it came about when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, a man was standing opposite him with his sword drawn in his hand, and Joshua went to him and said to him, “Are you for us or for our adversaries?”
In der Nähe von Jericho sah Josua sich plötzlich einem Mann mit gezücktem Schwert gegenüber. Josua ging auf ihn zu und rief: »Gehörst du zu uns oder unseren Feinden?«
He said, “No; rather I indeed come now as captain of the host of the LORD.” And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and bowed down, and said to him, “What has my lord to say to his servant?”
»Weder noch«, antwortete der Fremde. »Ich bin der Befehlshaber über das Heer Gottes. Und jetzt bin ich hier zur Stelle.« Da warf sich Josua ehrfürchtig vor ihm zu Boden. »Ich gehorche dir, Herr!«, sagte er. »Was befiehlst du?«
