New American Standard Bible

New International Version

  • A Call to Prayer

First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men,
  • Instructions on Worship

I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people —
  • for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity.
  • for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.
  • This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior,
  • This is good, and pleases God our Savior,
  • who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
  • who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.
  • For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,
  • For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus,
  • who gave Himself as a ransom for all, the testimony given at the proper time.
  • who gave himself as a ransom for all people. This has now been witnessed to at the proper time.
  • For this I was appointed a preacher and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying) as a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.
  • And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle — I am telling the truth, I am not lying — and a true and faithful teacher of the Gentiles.
  • Therefore I want the men in every place to pray, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and dissension.
  • Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or disputing.

  • Women Instructed

Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments,
  • I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes,
  • but rather by means of good works, as is proper for women making a claim to godliness.
  • but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.
  • A woman must quietly receive instruction with entire submissiveness.
  • A womana should learn in quietness and full submission.
  • But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet.
  • I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man;b she must be quiet.
  • For it was Adam who was first created, and then Eve.
  • For Adam was formed first, then Eve.
  • And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression.
  • And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner.
  • But women will be preserved through the bearing of children if they continue in faith and love and sanctity with self-restraint.
  • But womenc will be saved through childbearing — if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety.
