Israel Oppressed by Midian
Then the sons of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD gave them into the hands of Midian seven years.
Then the sons of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD gave them into the hands of Midian seven years.
Die Israeliten taten, was in den Augen des HERRN böse ist. Da gab sie der HERR in die Hand Midians, sieben Jahre lang.
The power of Midian prevailed against Israel. Because of Midian the sons of Israel made for themselves the dens which were in the mountains and the caves and the strongholds.
Die Hand Midians wurde stark gegen Israel. Vor Midian machten sich die Israeliten die Schluchten in den Bergen und die Höhlen und die Bergnester zurecht.
For it was when Israel had sown, that the Midianites would come up with the Amalekites and the sons of the east and go against them.
Doch immer, wenn die Israeliten gesät hatten, kamen Midian, die Amalekiter und die Leute aus dem Osten und zogen gegen sie heran.
So they would camp against them and destroy the produce of the earth as far as Gaza, and leave no sustenance in Israel as well as no sheep, ox, or donkey.
Sie belagerten die Israeliten und vernichteten die Ernte des Landes bis hin in die Gegend von Gaza. Sie ließen in Israel keine Lebensmittel übrig, auch kein Schaf, kein Rind und keinen Esel.
For they would come up with their livestock and their tents, they would come in like locusts for number, both they and their camels were innumerable; and they came into the land to devastate it.
Denn sie zogen mit ihren Herden herauf und mit ihren Zelten. Sie kamen so zahlreich wie die Heuschrecken. Zahllos waren sie selbst und auch ihre Kamele. Sie kamen und verheerten das Land.
So Israel was brought very low because of Midian, and the sons of Israel cried to the LORD.
So verarmte Israel sehr wegen Midian und die Israeliten schrien zum HERRN.
Now it came about when the sons of Israel cried to the LORD on account of Midian,
Als nun die Israeliten wegen Midian zum HERRN schrien,
that the LORD sent a prophet to the sons of Israel, and he said to them, “Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, ‘It was I who brought you up from Egypt and brought you out from the house of slavery.
schickte der HERR einen Propheten zu den Israeliten. Dieser sagte zu ihnen: So spricht der HERR, der Gott Israels: Ich selbst habe euch aus Ägypten heraufgeführt. Ich habe euch aus dem Sklavenhaus herausgeführt.
‘I delivered you from the hands of the Egyptians and from the hands of all your oppressors, and dispossessed them before you and gave you their land,
Ich habe euch aus der Hand Ägyptens und aus der Hand all eurer Unterdrücker befreit. Ich habe sie vor euch vertrieben und euch ihr Land gegeben.
and I said to you, “I am the LORD your God; you shall not fear the gods of the Amorites in whose land you live. But you have not obeyed Me.”’”
Und ich habe euch gesagt: Ich bin der HERR, euer Gott. Fürchtet nicht die Götter der Amoriter, in deren Land ihr wohnt! Aber ihr habt nicht auf meine Stimme gehört.
Gideon Is Visited
Then the angel of the LORD came and sat under the oak that was in Ophrah, which belonged to Joash the Abiezrite as his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the wine press in order to save it from the Midianites.
Der Engel des HERRN kam und setzte sich unter die Eiche bei Ofra, die dem Abiësriter Joasch gehörte. Sein Sohn Gideon war gerade dabei, in der Kelter Weizen zu dreschen, um ihn vor Midian in Sicherheit zu bringen.
The angel of the LORD appeared to him and said to him, “The LORD is with you, O valiant warrior.”
Da erschien ihm der Engel des HERRN und sagte zu ihm: Der HERR sei mit dir, starker Held.
Then Gideon said to him, “O my lord, if the LORD is with us, why then has all this happened to us? And where are all His miracles which our fathers told us about, saying, ‘Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt?’ But now the LORD has abandoned us and given us into the hand of Midian.”
Doch Gideon sagte zu ihm: Mit Verlaub, mein Herr, ist der HERR wirklich mit uns? Warum hat uns dann all das getroffen? Wo sind alle seine wunderbaren Taten, von denen uns unsere Väter erzählt haben? Sie sagten doch: Hat uns der HERR nicht aus Ägypten heraufgeführt? Jetzt aber hat uns der HERR aufgegeben und uns in die Hand Midians gegeben.
The LORD looked at him and said, “Go in this your strength and deliver Israel from the hand of Midian. Have I not sent you?”
Da wandte sich der HERR ihm zu und sagte: Geh in dieser deiner Kraft und rette Israel aus der Hand Midians! Sende ich dich nicht hiermit?
He said to Him, “O Lord, how shall I deliver Israel? Behold, my family is the least in Manasseh, and I am the youngest in my father’s house.”
Er entgegnete ihm: Mit Verlaub, Herr, womit könnte ich Israel retten? Sieh doch, meine Tausendschaft ist die schwächste in Manasse und ich bin der Jüngste im Haus meines Vaters.
But the LORD said to him, “Surely I will be with you, and you shall defeat Midian as one man.”
Der HERR sagte zu ihm: Ich werde ganz gewiss mit dir sein und du wirst Midian schlagen, als wäre es nur ein Mann.
So Gideon said to Him, “If now I have found favor in Your sight, then show me a sign that it is You who speak with me.
Gideon erwiderte ihm: Wenn ich Gnade gefunden habe in deinen Augen, dann gib mir ein Zeichen dafür, dass du selbst es bist, der mit mir redet.
“Please do not depart from here, until I come back to You, and bring out my offering and lay it before You.” And He said, “I will remain until you return.”
Entfern dich doch nicht von hier, bis ich zu dir komme, meine Gabe herausbringe und sie vor dir hinlege! Er sagte: Ich werde bleiben, bis du zurückkommst.
Then Gideon went in and prepared a young goat and unleavened bread from an ephah of flour; he put the meat in a basket and the broth in a pot, and brought them out to him under the oak and presented them.
Gideon ging hinein und bereitete ein Ziegenböckchen zu sowie ungesäuerte Brote von einem Efa Mehl. Er legte das Fleisch in einen Korb, tat die Brühe in einen Topf, brachte beides zu ihm hinaus unter die Eiche und legte es vor.
The angel of God said to him, “Take the meat and the unleavened bread and lay them on this rock, and pour out the broth.” And he did so.
Da sagte der Engel Gottes zu ihm: Nimm das Fleisch und die Brote und leg sie auf den Felsen da, die Brühe aber gieß aus! Gideon tat es.
Then the angel of the LORD put out the end of the staff that was in his hand and touched the meat and the unleavened bread; and fire sprang up from the rock and consumed the meat and the unleavened bread. Then the angel of the LORD vanished from his sight.
Der Engel des HERRN streckte die Spitze des Stabes aus, den er in der Hand hatte, und berührte das Fleisch und die Brote. Da stieg Feuer von dem Felsblock auf und verzehrte das Fleisch und die Brote. Der Engel des HERRN aber war Gideons Augen entschwunden.
When Gideon saw that he was the angel of the LORD, he said, “Alas, O Lord GOD! For now I have seen the angel of the LORD face to face.”
Als nun Gideon sah, dass es der Engel des HERRN gewesen war, sagte er: Ach, Herr und GOTT, ich habe den Engel des HERRN von Angesicht zu Angesicht gesehen.
The LORD said to him, “Peace to you, do not fear; you shall not die.”
Der HERR erwiderte ihm: Friede sei mit dir! Fürchte dich nicht, du wirst nicht sterben.
Then Gideon built an altar there to the LORD and named it The LORD is Peace. To this day it is still in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
Gideon errichtete an jener Stelle einen Altar für den HERRN und nannte ihn: Der HERR ist Friede. Der Altar steht bis zum heutigen Tag in Ofra der Abiësriter.
Now on the same night the LORD said to him, “Take your father’s bull and a second bull seven years old, and pull down the altar of Baal which belongs to your father, and cut down the Asherah that is beside it;
In jener Nacht sagte der HERR zu ihm: Nimm den Stier von den Rindern, die deinem Vater gehören, und zwar den siebenjährigen Prachtstier, reiß den Altar des Baal nieder, der deinem Vater gehört, und die Aschera daneben hau um!
and build an altar to the LORD your God on the top of this stronghold in an orderly manner, and take a second bull and offer a burnt offering with the wood of the Asherah which you shall cut down.”
Bau einen Altar für den HERRN, deinen Gott, auf der Höhe der Burg hier, in der vorgesehenen Ordnung, nimm den Prachtstier und bring ihn mit den Holzstücken der Aschera, die du umhaust, als Brandopfer dar!
Then Gideon took ten men of his servants and did as the LORD had spoken to him; and because he was too afraid of his father’s household and the men of the city to do it by day, he did it by night.
Da nahm Gideon zehn seiner Knechte und tat, was der HERR zu ihm gesagt hatte. Weil er sich aber vor seiner Familie und den Leuten der Stadt fürchtete, es bei Tag zu tun, tat er es bei Nacht.
The Altar of Baal Destroyed
When the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was torn down, and the Asherah which was beside it was cut down, and the second bull was offered on the altar which had been built.
Als die Einwohner der Stadt am Morgen aufstanden, siehe, da war der Altar des Baal niedergerissen, die Aschera daneben umgehauen und der Prachtstier auf dem neuerbauten Altar dargebracht.
They said to one another, “Who did this thing?” And when they searched about and inquired, they said, “Gideon the son of Joash did this thing.”
Da sagten sie zueinander: Wer hat das getan? Sie suchten und forschten nach und stellten fest: Gideon, der Sohn des Joasch, hat es getan.
Then the men of the city said to Joash, “Bring out your son, that he may die, for he has torn down the altar of Baal, and indeed, he has cut down the Asherah which was beside it.”
Die Einwohner der Stadt sagten zu Joasch: Gib deinen Sohn heraus, dass er stirbt, denn er hat den Altar des Baal niedergerissen und die Aschera daneben umgehauen!
But Joash said to all who stood against him, “Will you contend for Baal, or will you deliver him? Whoever will plead for him shall be put to death by morning. If he is a god, let him contend for himself, because someone has torn down his altar.”
Joasch erwiderte allen, die um ihn herumstanden: Wollt ihr etwa für Baal streiten? Wollt ihr ihn retten? Wer für ihn streitet, soll noch vor dem Morgen sterben. Wenn Baal Gott ist, soll er für sich selbst streiten, weil man seinen Altar niedergerissen hat.
Therefore on that day he named him Jerubbaal, that is to say, “Let Baal contend against him,” because he had torn down his altar.
Darum nannte man Gideon seit jenem Tag Jerubbaal — das heißt: Baal möge gegen ihn streiten — ; denn er hat seinen Altar niedergerissen.
Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the sons of the east assembled themselves; and they crossed over and camped in the valley of Jezreel.
Ganz Midian, Amalek und die Leute aus dem Osten taten sich zusammen, zogen herüber und schlugen in der Ebene Jesreel ihr Lager auf.
So the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon; and he blew a trumpet, and the Abiezrites were called together to follow him.
Der Geist des HERRN hatte Gideon bekleidet. Gideon blies ins Widderhorn und die Abiesriter ließen sich in seiner Gefolgschaft aufbieten.
He sent messengers throughout Manasseh, and they also were called together to follow him; and he sent messengers to Asher, Zebulun, and Naphtali, and they came up to meet them.
Er schickte Boten in ganz Manasse umher und auch Manasse ließ sich in seiner Gefolgschaft aufbieten. Außerdem schickte er Boten in Ascher, Sebulon und Naftali umher und sie zogen hinauf ihnen entgegen.
Sign of the Fleece
Then Gideon said to God, “If You will deliver Israel through me, as You have spoken,
Da sagte Gideon zu Gott: Wenn du Israel wirklich durch meine Hand retten willst, wie du gesagt hast —
behold, I will put a fleece of wool on the threshing floor. If there is dew on the fleece only, and it is dry on all the ground, then I will know that You will deliver Israel through me, as You have spoken.”
siehe, ich lege frisch geschorene Wolle auf die Tenne; wenn Tau allein auf der Wolle und auf dem ganzen Boden Trockenheit sein wird, dann werde ich erkennen, dass du durch meine Hand Israel retten willst, wie du gesagt hast.
And it was so. When he arose early the next morning and squeezed the fleece, he drained the dew from the fleece, a bowl full of water.
Und so geschah es. Als er früh am Morgen aufstand und die Wolle ausdrückte, presste er Tau aus der Wolle heraus — eine Schale voll Wasser.
Then Gideon said to God, “Do not let Your anger burn against me that I may speak once more; please let me make a test once more with the fleece, let it now be dry only on the fleece, and let there be dew on all the ground.”
Darauf sagte Gideon zu Gott: Dein Zorn möge nicht gegen mich entbrennen, wenn ich nur dieses eine Mal noch rede. Ich möchte es nur noch dieses eine Mal mit der Wolle versuchen: Trockenheit sei auf der Wolle allein und auf dem ganzen Boden soll Tau liegen.
