At that time, Judah left his brothers and went down to stay with a man of Adullam named Hirah.

Сталося ж, що тієї пори пішов Юда від своїх братів і прибув до одного чоловіка, одоламітця, ім’я якому — Ірас.
There Judah met the daughter of a Canaanite man named Shua. He married her and made love to her;
І побачив там Юда дочку чоловіка-ханаанця, ім’я якої Сава. І взяв її, і ввійшов до неї.
she became pregnant and gave birth to a son, who was named Er.
Вона завагітніла й народила сина, і дала йому ім’я Ір.
She conceived again and gave birth to a son and named him Onan.
І знову завагітніла, і народила сина, і назвала його Авнаном.
She gave birth to still another son and named him Shelah. It was at Kezib that she gave birth to him.
Згодом ще народила сина і дала йому ім’я — Силом. Вона ж перебувала в Хасві, коли їх народжувала.
Judah got a wife for Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar.

But Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the Lord’s sight; so the Lord put him to death.

Then Judah said to Onan, “Sleep with your brother’s wife and fulfill your duty to her as a brother-in-law to raise up offspring for your brother.”
Тож Юда сказав Авнанові: Увійди до дружини свого померлого брата і одружися з нею, — подбай, щоб у твого брата були нащадки.
But Onan knew that the child would not be his; so whenever he slept with his brother’s wife, he spilled his semen on the ground to keep from providing offspring for his brother.
Та Авнан зрозумів, що нащадки будуть не його. І сталося, коли він сходився з дружиною свого брата, то випускав сім’я на землю, щоб не дати нащадка своєму братові.
What he did was wicked in the Lord’s sight; so the Lord put him to death also.
І перед Богом поганим було, що таке той вчинив, — і Він убив і цього.
Judah then said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, “Live as a widow in your father’s household until my son Shelah grows up.” For he thought, “He may die too, just like his brothers.” So Tamar went to live in her father’s household.
Тож Юда сказав своїй невістці Тамарі: Залишайся вдовою в домі свого батька, поки не підросте мій син Силом! — бо сказав: Щоби часом не помер і цей, як і його брати. Відійшла Тамара і оселилася в домі свого батька.
After a long time Judah’s wife, the daughter of Shua, died. When Judah had recovered from his grief, he went up to Timnah, to the men who were shearing his sheep, and his friend Hirah the Adullamite went with him.
Сповнилися дні — і померла Сава, Юдина дружина. І коли утішився, пішов Юда — сам та його пастух Ірас, одоламітець, — в Тамну, до тих, які стригли його овець.
When Tamar was told, “Your father-in-law is on his way to Timnah to shear his sheep,”
І сповістили його невістці Тамарі, кажучи: Ось твій тесть іде в Тамну стригти своїх овець.
she took off her widow’s clothes, covered herself with a veil to disguise herself, and then sat down at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah. For she saw that, though Shelah had now grown up, she had not been given to him as his wife.
І скинувши із себе одяг удови, вона накинула намітку, прикрасилася і сіла біля брами Енана, що по дорозі до Тамни, оскільки знала, що Силом виріс, та він не віддав йому її за дружину.
When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face.
А Юда, побачивши її, подумав, що вона повія, бо вона накрила своє обличчя, і він не впізнав її.
Not realizing that she was his daughter-in-law, he went over to her by the roadside and said, “Come now, let me sleep with you.”
“And what will you give me to sleep with you?” she asked.
“And what will you give me to sleep with you?” she asked.
Він завернув до неї з дороги і сказав їй: Дозволь мені ввійти до тебе, — оскільки не впізнав, що це його невістка. А вона сказала: Що мені даси, як увійдеш до мене?
“I’ll send you a young goat from my flock,” he said.
“Will you give me something as a pledge until you send it?” she asked.
“Will you give me something as a pledge until you send it?” she asked.
Він же відповів: Я пришлю тобі зі стада козеня. Вона ж сказала: На умові, що даси заставу, доки не пришлеш.
He said, “What pledge should I give you?”
“Your seal and its cord, and the staff in your hand,” she answered. So he gave them to her and slept with her, and she became pregnant by him.

Він же сказав: Яку дати тобі заставу? Вона ж відповіла: Твій перстень, ланцюжок з печаткою і посох, що у твоїй руці. Він дав їй і ввійшов до неї, і та завагітніла від нього.
After she left, she took off her veil and put on her widow’s clothes again.
І, вставши, вона відійшла, скинула із себе намітку і зодяглася в одяг свого вдівства.
Meanwhile Judah sent the young goat by his friend the Adullamite in order to get his pledge back from the woman, but he did not find her.
А Юда, щоб забрати заставу в жінки, послав козеня через свого пастуха-одоламійця, однак той не знайшов її.
He asked the men who lived there, “Where is the shrine prostitute who was beside the road at Enaim?”
“There hasn’t been any shrine prostitute here,” they said.
“There hasn’t been any shrine prostitute here,” they said.
Тож запитав чоловіків, які з тої місцевості: Де та повія, котра була в Енані при дорозі? Вони відповіли: Не було тут повії!
So he went back to Judah and said, “I didn’t find her. Besides, the men who lived there said, ‘There hasn’t been any shrine prostitute here.’ ”
Тож він повернувся до Юди і сказав: Не знайшов я її, і чоловіки на місці кажуть, що там немає повії.
Then Judah said, “Let her keep what she has, or we will become a laughingstock. After all, I did send her this young goat, but you didn’t find her.”
А Юда сказав: Нехай має те, але щоби часом нас не висміяли. Я ж послав це козеня, та ти її не знайшов.
About three months later Judah was told, “Your daughter-in-law Tamar is guilty of prostitution, and as a result she is now pregnant.”
Judah said, “Bring her out and have her burned to death!”

Сталося ж, що через три місяці Юді сповістили, стверджуючи: Упала в блуд твоя невістка Тамара й ось завагітніла через розпусту. А Юда сказав: Виведіть її — і нехай буде спалена.
As she was being brought out, she sent a message to her father-in-law. “I am pregnant by the man who owns these,” she said. And she added, “See if you recognize whose seal and cord and staff these are.”
Коли ж її вели, вона послала до свого тестя, кажучи: Я завагітніла від чоловіка, кому належить оце. Упізнавай, — сказала вона, — чий це перстень, ланцюжок з печаткою і цей посох!
Judah recognized them and said, “She is more righteous than I, since I wouldn’t give her to my son Shelah.” And he did not sleep with her again.
Юда впізнав і сказав: Тамара виявилася праведнішою за мене, оскільки я не дав її моєму синові Силомові. Та вже більше не сходився з нею.
When the time came for her to give birth, there were twin boys in her womb.
Сталося ж, коли почалися пологи, виявилося, що в її лоні були близнята.
As she was giving birth, one of them put out his hand; so the midwife took a scarlet thread and tied it on his wrist and said, “This one came out first.”
І сталося, що під час її родів один з них висунув руку. Тож повитуха взяла, та й пов’язала на його ручку червону нитку, кажучи: Цей вийде першим.
Та коли втягнув ручку назад, то відразу ж вийшов його брат. А вона сказала: Як же ти прорвав перепону? І вона дала йому ім’я — Фарес [1].
