New King James Version

  • Cain and Abel

Adama made love to his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain.b She said, “With the help of the Lord I have brought forthc a man.”
  • Cain Murders Abel

Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore [a]Cain, and said, “I have acquired a man from the Lord.”
  • Later she gave birth to his brother Abel.
Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil.
  • Then she bore again, this time his brother [b]Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
  • In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord.
  • And [c]in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the Lord.
  • And Abel also brought an offering — fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering,
  • Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And the Lord respected Abel and his offering,
  • but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.
  • but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell.
  • Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast?
  • So the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen?
  • If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.”
  • If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is [d]for you, but you should rule over it.”
  • Now Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.”d While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.
  • Now Cain [e]talked with Abel his [f]brother; and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.
  • Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?”
“I don’t know,” he replied. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”
  • Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?”
He said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”
  • The Lord said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground.
  • And He said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground.
  • Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.
  • So now you are cursed from the earth, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.
  • When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth.”
  • When you till the ground, it shall no longer yield its strength to you. A fugitive and a vagabond you shall be on the earth.”
  • Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is more than I can bear.
  • And Cain said to the Lord, “My [g]punishment is greater than I can bear!
  • Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.”
  • Surely You have driven me out this day from the face of the ground; I shall be hidden from Your face; I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond on the earth, and it will happen that anyone who finds me will kill me.”
  • But the Lord said to him, “Not soe; anyone who kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over.” Then the Lord put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him.
  • And the Lord said to him, [h]“Therefore, whoever kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.” And the Lord set a mark on Cain, lest anyone finding him should kill him.
  • So Cain went out from the Lord’s presence and lived in the land of Nod,f east of Eden.
  • The Family of Cain

Then Cain went out from the presence of the Lord and dwelt in the land of [i]Nod on the east of Eden.
  • Cain made love to his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Cain was then building a city, and he named it after his son Enoch.
  • And Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch. And he built a city, and called the name of the city after the name of his son — Enoch.
  • To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael was the father of Methushael, and Methushael was the father of Lamech.
  • To Enoch was born Irad; and Irad begot Mehujael, and Mehujael begot Methushael, and Methushael begot Lamech.
  • Lamech married two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah.
  • Then Lamech took for himself two wives: the name of one was Adah, and the name of the second was Zillah.
  • Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who live in tents and raise livestock.
  • And Adah bore Jabal. He was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock.
  • His brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play stringed instruments and pipes.
  • His brother’s name was Jubal. He was the father of all those who play the harp and [j]flute.
  • Zillah also had a son, Tubal-Cain, who forged all kinds of tools out ofg bronze and iron. Tubal-Cain’s sister was Naamah.
  • And as for Zillah, she also bore Tubal-Cain, an instructor of every craftsman in bronze and iron. And the sister of Tubal-Cain was Naamah.
  • Lamech said to his wives,
    “Adah and Zillah, listen to me;
wives of Lamech, hear my words.
I have killed a man for wounding me,
a young man for injuring me.
  • Then Lamech said to his wives:
    “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice;
Wives of Lamech, listen to my speech!
For I have [k]killed a man for wounding me,
Even a young man [l]for hurting me.
  • If Cain is avenged seven times,
    then Lamech seventy-seven times.”
  • If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold,
    Then Lamech seventy-sevenfold.”
  • Adam made love to his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth,h saying, “God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.”
  • A New Son

And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and named him [m]Seth, “For God has appointed another seed for me instead of Abel, whom Cain killed.”
  • Seth also had a son, and he named him Enosh.
At that time people began to call oni the name of the Lord.
  • And as for Seth, to him also a son was born; and he named him [n]Enosh. Then men began to call on the name of the Lord.
