Joseph’s Brothers Go to Egypt
When Jacob learned that there was grain in Egypt, he said to his sons, “Why do you just keep looking at each other?”

А Яків побачив, що в Єгипті є хліб. І сказав Яків до синів своїх: „Пощо ви споглядаєте один на о́дного?“
He continued, “I have heard that there is grain in Egypt. Go down there and buy some for us, so that we may live and not die.”
І сказав він: „Ось чув я, що в Єгипті є хліб; зійдіть туди, і купіть нам хліба ізвідти, — і будемо жити, і не помремо“.
Then ten of Joseph’s brothers went down to buy grain from Egypt.
І зійшли десятеро Йосипових братів купити збіжжя з Єгипту.
But Jacob did not send Benjamin, Joseph’s brother, with the others, because he was afraid that harm might come to him.
А Веніями́на, Йо́сипового брата, Яків не послав із братами його, бо сказав: „Щоб не спіткало його яке нещастя!“
So Israel’s sons were among those who went to buy grain, for there was famine in the land of Canaan also.
І прибули Ізра́їлеві сини купити хліба разом з іншими, що прихо́дили, бо був голод у Краї ханаанськім.
Now Joseph was the governor of the land, the person who sold grain to all its people. So when Joseph’s brothers arrived, they bowed down to him with their faces to the ground.
А Йосип — він володар над тим краєм, він продавав хліб усьому народові тієї землі. І прибули́ Йо́сипові брати, та й уклонилися йому обличчям до землі.
As soon as Joseph saw his brothers, he recognized them, but he pretended to be a stranger and spoke harshly to them. “Where do you come from?” he asked.
“From the land of Canaan,” they replied, “to buy food.”
“From the land of Canaan,” they replied, “to buy food.”
І побачив Йо́сип братів своїх, і пізнав їх, та не дав пізнати себе. І говорив із ними суворо, і промовив до них: „Звідкіля прибули́ ви?“ А вони відказали: „З ханаанського Кра́ю купити їжі“.
Although Joseph recognized his brothers, they did not recognize him.
І пізнав Йосип братів своїх, а вони не впізнали його.
Then he remembered his dreams about them and said to them, “You are spies! You have come to see where our land is unprotected.”
І згадав Йосип сни, що про них йому снились були́. І сказав він до них: „Ви шпигуни́! Ви́ прибули́ підглянути слабі місця цієї землі“.
“No, my lord,” they answered. “Your servants have come to buy food.
А вони відказали йому: „Ні, пане мій, а раби твої прибули́ купити їжі.
We are all the sons of one man. Your servants are honest men, not spies.”
Ми всі — сини одного чоловіка, ми правдиві. Раби твої не були́ шпигунами!“
“No!” he said to them. “You have come to see where our land is unprotected.”
Він же промовив до них: „Ні, — бо ви прийшли підглянути слабі місця цієї землі!“
But they replied, “Your servants were twelve brothers, the sons of one man, who lives in the land of Canaan. The youngest is now with our father, and one is no more.”
А вони відказали: „Дванадцятеро твоїх рабів — брати ми, сини одного чоловіка в ханаанському Краї. А наймолодший тепер із батьком нашим, а одного нема“.
Joseph said to them, “It is just as I told you: You are spies!
І промовив їм Йо́сип: „Оце те, що я сказав був до вас, говорячи: Ви шпигуни.
And this is how you will be tested: As surely as Pharaoh lives, you will not leave this place unless your youngest brother comes here.
Оцим ви будете ви́пробувані: Клянуся життям фараоновим, що ви не вийдете звідси, якщо не при́йде сюди наймолодший ваш брат!
Send one of your number to get your brother; the rest of you will be kept in prison, so that your words may be tested to see if you are telling the truth. If you are not, then as surely as Pharaoh lives, you are spies!”
Пошліть з-поміж себе одно́го, і нехай ві́зьме вашого брата, а ви бу́дете ув'язнені. І слова ваші будуть піддані пробі, чи правда з вами; а коли ні, — клянуся життям фараоновим, що ви шпигуни!“
On the third day, Joseph said to them, “Do this and you will live, for I fear God:
А третього дня Йо́сип промовив до них: „Зробіть це — і живіть. Я Бога боюся,
If you are honest men, let one of your brothers stay here in prison, while the rest of you go and take grain back for your starving households.
якщо ви правдиві. Один брат ваш буде ув'язнений в домі вашої варти, а ви йдіть, принесіть хліба для заспокоєння голоду ваших домів.
But you must bring your youngest brother to me, so that your words may be verified and that you may not die.” This they proceeded to do.
А свого наймолодшого брата приведіть до мене, — і бу́дуть потверджені ваші слова, а ви не повмираєте“. І вони зробили так.
They said to one another, “Surely we are being punished because of our brother. We saw how distressed he was when he pleaded with us for his life, but we would not listen; that’s why this distress has come on us.”
І говорили вони один о́дному: „Справді, винні ми за нашого брата, бо ми бачили недолю душі його, коли він благав нас, а ми не послухали. Тому то прийшло це нещастя на нас!“
Reuben replied, “Didn’t I tell you not to sin against the boy? But you wouldn’t listen! Now we must give an accounting for his blood.”
І відповів їм Руви́м, говорячи: „Чи не говорив я вам, кажучи: Не грішіть проти хло́пця, та ви не послухали. А оце й кров його жадається“
They did not realize that Joseph could understand them, since he was using an interpreter.
А вони не знали, що Йо́сип їх розуміє, бо був поміж ними перекладач.
He turned away from them and began to weep, but then came back and spoke to them again. He had Simeon taken from them and bound before their eyes.
А він відвернувся від них та й заплакав... І вернувся до них, і говорив із ними. І взяв від них Симео́на, та й зв'язав його на їхніх очах.
Joseph gave orders to fill their bags with grain, to put each man’s silver back in his sack, and to give them provisions for their journey. After this was done for them,
А Йосип наказав, щоб напо́внили їхні мішки збіжжям, а срібло їхнє вернули кожному до його мішка, і дали їм поживи на дорогу. І їм зроблено так.
they loaded their grain on their donkeys and left.
І поне́сли вони хліб свій на ослах своїх, і пішли звідти.
At the place where they stopped for the night one of them opened his sack to get feed for his donkey, and he saw his silver in the mouth of his sack.
І відкрив один мішка свого, щоб ослові своєму дати паші на нічлігу, та й побачив срібло своє, — а воно ось в отворі мішка його!
“My silver has been returned,” he said to his brothers. “Here it is in my sack.”
Their hearts sank and they turned to each other trembling and said, “What is this that God has done to us?”

І сказав він братам своїм: „Повернене срібло моє, — і ось воно в мішку моїм!“ І завмерло їм серце, і вони затремтіли, говорячи один до о́дного: „Що́ це Бог нам зробив?“
When they came to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan, they told him all that had happened to them. They said,
І прибули вони до Якова, батька свого, до Кра́ю ханаанського, і розповіли́ йому все, що́ їх спіткало було, говорячи:
“The man who is lord over the land spoke harshly to us and treated us as though we were spying on the land.
„Той муж, пан того краю, говорив із нами суворо, і прийняв був нас як шпигунів того краю.
But we said to him, ‘We are honest men; we are not spies.
А ми сказали йому: „Ми правдиві, — не були ми шпигунами!
We were twelve brothers, sons of one father. One is no more, and the youngest is now with our father in Canaan.’
Ми дванадцятеро братів, сини нашого ба́тька. Одного нема, а наймолодший тепер з нашим батьком у ханаанському Краї“.
“Then the man who is lord over the land said to us, ‘This is how I will know whether you are honest men: Leave one of your brothers here with me, and take food for your starving households and go.
І сказав до нас муж той, пан того кра́ю: „З того пізна́ю, що правдиві ви, — зоста́вте зо мною одно́го вашого брата, а на голод домів ваших візьміть хліб та й ідіть.
І приведіть до мене брата вашого найменшого, і бу́ду я знати, що ви не шпигуни, що ви правдиві. Тоді віддам вам вашого брата, і ви можете перехо́дити цей край для купівлі.“
As they were emptying their sacks, there in each man’s sack was his pouch of silver! When they and their father saw the money pouches, they were frightened.
І сталося, — вони випоро́жнювали мішки свої, а ось у кожного вузлик срібла його в його мішку! І побачили вузлики срібла свого, вони та їх батько, — і полякались.
Their father Jacob said to them, “You have deprived me of my children. Joseph is no more and Simeon is no more, and now you want to take Benjamin. Everything is against me!”
І сказав до них Яків, їх батько: „Ви позбавили мене дітей, — Йосипа нема, і Симеона нема, а тепер Веніямина заберете? Усе те на мене!“
Then Reuben said to his father, “You may put both of my sons to death if I do not bring him back to you. Entrust him to my care, and I will bring him back.”
І промовив Руви́м до батька свого, кажучи: „Двох синів моїх уб'єш, коли не приведу його до тебе! Дай же його на руку мою, а я поверну його до тебе“.
But Jacob said, “My son will not go down there with you; his brother is dead and he is the only one left. If harm comes to him on the journey you are taking, you will bring my gray head down to the grave in sorrow.”
А той відказав: „Не зі́йде з вами мій син, бо брат його вмер, а він сам позостався... А трапиться йому нещастя в дорозі, якою підете, то в смутку зведете мою сивину до шео́лу!“
