Haman’s Plot to Destroy the Jews

Einige Zeit später gab König Xerxes einem Mann namens Haman die höchste Stellung am Königshof. Er war ein Sohn von Hammedata und Nachkomme von Agag.
All the royal officials at the king’s gate knelt down and paid honor to Haman, for the king had commanded this concerning him. But Mordecai would not kneel down or pay him honor.
Alle Beamten im Palast waren ihm untergeordnet. Sie mussten sich auf Befehl des Königs vor Haman niederwerfen, wenn er an ihnen vorüberging. Nur Mordechai verneigte sich nicht vor ihm.
Then the royal officials at the king’s gate asked Mordecai, “Why do you disobey the king’s command?”

Day after day they spoke to him but he refused to comply. Therefore they told Haman about it to see whether Mordecai’s behavior would be tolerated, for he had told them he was a Jew.
»Weil ich Jude bin«, antwortete er. Sie ließen ihm keine Ruhe und machten ihm jeden Tag Vorwürfe. Doch Mordechai hörte nicht auf sie. Da meldeten sie es Haman, um zu sehen, ob er Mordechais Begründung gelten lassen würde.
When Haman saw that Mordecai would not kneel down or pay him honor, he was enraged.
Als Haman erfuhr, dass Mordechai sich nicht vor ihm niederwarf, packte ihn der Zorn.
Yet having learned who Mordecai’s people were, he scorned the idea of killing only Mordecai. Instead Haman looked for a way to destroy all Mordecai’s people, the Jews, throughout the whole kingdom of Xerxes.
Er wollte sich aber nicht an Mordechai allein rächen, denn er hatte gehört, dass er Jude war. So schmiedete er einen Plan, um alle Juden im persischen Reich zu vernichten.
Im 12. Regierungsjahr von König Xerxes, im 1. Monat, dem Monat Nisan, ließ Haman das Los werfen, das auch »Pur« genannt wurde. Er wollte herausfinden, welcher Zeitpunkt am besten geeignet sei, um seinen Plan durchzuführen. Das Los fiel auf den 13. Tag des 12. Monats, das ist der Monat Adar.
Then Haman said to King Xerxes, “There is a certain people dispersed among the peoples in all the provinces of your kingdom who keep themselves separate. Their customs are different from those of all other people, and they do not obey the king’s laws; it is not in the king’s best interest to tolerate them.
Darauf sagte Haman zum König: »In allen Provinzen deines Reiches leben Angehörige eines Volkes, das sich von den anderen Völkern absondert. Sie haben andere Sitten und Gesetze als die übrigen Völker und widersetzen sich deinen Anordnungen. Das darfst du dir nicht gefallen lassen!
Wenn du es für richtig hältst, dann befiehl durch einen Erlass die Vernichtung dieses Volkes. Dies wird den königlichen Schatzkammern 350 Tonnen Silber einbringen.«
So the king took his signet ring from his finger and gave it to Haman son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the enemy of the Jews.
Da zog der König seinen Siegelring vom Finger, gab ihn Haman, dem erbitterten Feind der Juden,
“Keep the money,” the king said to Haman, “and do with the people as you please.”
und sagte zu ihm: »Hol dir das Geld dieses Volkes! Und mit den Leuten selbst kannst du tun, was du für richtig hältst.«
Then on the thirteenth day of the first month the royal secretaries were summoned. They wrote out in the script of each province and in the language of each people all Haman’s orders to the king’s satraps, the governors of the various provinces and the nobles of the various peoples. These were written in the name of King Xerxes himself and sealed with his own ring.
Am 13. Tag des 1. Monats ließ Haman die Schreiber des Königs rufen. Sie mussten genau nach seinen Anweisungen Briefe schreiben, die an die Fürsten des Königs, an die Provinzstatthalter und an die höchsten Beamten der einzelnen Völker gerichtet waren. Jede Volksgruppe sollte das Schreiben in ihrer eigenen Schrift und Sprache erhalten. Die Briefe waren im Namen des Königs verfasst und mit seinem Siegel versehen.
Dispatches were sent by couriers to all the king’s provinces with the order to destroy, kill and annihilate all the Jews — young and old, women and children — on a single day, the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, the month of Adar, and to plunder their goods.
Sie lauteten: »An einem einzigen Tag, am 13. Tag des 12. Monats, des Monats Adar, sollen alle Juden getötet werden — Junge und Alte, Kinder und Frauen. Niemand darf überleben! Ihr Besitz ist zu beschlagnahmen.« Der Erlass sollte von Eilboten in alle Provinzen des Reiches gebracht
A copy of the text of the edict was to be issued as law in every province and made known to the people of every nationality so they would be ready for that day.

The couriers went out, spurred on by the king’s command, and the edict was issued in the citadel of Susa. The king and Haman sat down to drink, but the city of Susa was bewildered.
Der König befahl den Eilboten, sich schnell auf den Weg zu machen. Auch in der Residenz Susa wurde der Erlass veröffentlicht. Und während die Menschen in der ganzen Stadt in heller Aufregung waren, hielten der König und Haman ein Trinkgelage ab.
