Haman’s Plot to Destroy the Jews
After these events, King Xerxes honored Haman son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, elevating him and giving him a seat of honor higher than that of all the other nobles.
After these events, King Xerxes honored Haman son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, elevating him and giving him a seat of honor higher than that of all the other nobles.
Nach diesen Geschichten machte der König Ahasveros Haman groß, den Sohn Hammedathas, den Agagiter, und erhöhte ihn und setzte seinen Stuhl über alle Fürsten, die bei ihm waren.
All the royal officials at the king’s gate knelt down and paid honor to Haman, for the king had commanded this concerning him. But Mordecai would not kneel down or pay him honor.
Und alle Knechte des Königs, die im Tor waren, beugten die Kniee und fielen vor Haman nieder; denn der König hatte es also geboten. Aber Mardochai beugte die Kniee nicht und fiel nicht nieder.
Then the royal officials at the king’s gate asked Mordecai, “Why do you disobey the king’s command?”
Da sprachen des Königs Knechte, die im Tor des Königs waren, zu Mardochai: Warum übertrittst du des Königs Gebot?
Day after day they spoke to him but he refused to comply. Therefore they told Haman about it to see whether Mordecai’s behavior would be tolerated, for he had told them he was a Jew.
Und da sie solches täglich zu ihm sagten und er ihnen nicht gehorchte, sagten sie es Haman an, daß sie sähen, ob solch Tun Mardochais bestehen würde; denn er hatte ihnen gesagt, daß er ein Jude wäre.
When Haman saw that Mordecai would not kneel down or pay him honor, he was enraged.
Und da Haman sah, daß Mardochai ihm nicht die Kniee beugte noch vor ihm niederfiel, ward er voll Grimms.
Yet having learned who Mordecai’s people were, he scorned the idea of killing only Mordecai. Instead Haman looked for a way to destroy all Mordecai’s people, the Jews, throughout the whole kingdom of Xerxes.
Und verachtete es, daß er an Mardochai allein sollte die Hand legen, denn sie hatten ihm das Volk Mardochais angesagt; sondern er trachtete, das Volk Mardochais, alle Juden, so im ganzen Königreich des Ahasveros waren, zu vertilgen.
Im ersten Monat, das ist der Monat Nisan, im zwölften Jahr des Königs Ahasveros, ward das Pur, das ist das Los, geworfen vor Haman, von einem Tage auf den andern und von Monat zu Monat bis auf den zwölften, das ist der Monat Adar.
Then Haman said to King Xerxes, “There is a certain people dispersed among the peoples in all the provinces of your kingdom who keep themselves separate. Their customs are different from those of all other people, and they do not obey the king’s laws; it is not in the king’s best interest to tolerate them.
Und Haman sprach zum König Ahasveros: Es ist ein Volk, zerstreut und teilt sich unter alle Völker in allen Ländern deines Königreichs, und ihr Gesetz ist anders denn aller Völker, und tun nicht nach des Königs Gesetzen; es ziemt dem König nicht, sie also zu lassen.
Gefällt es dem König, so lasse er schreiben, daß man sie umbringe; so will ich 10,000 Zentner Silber darwägen unter die Hand der Amtleute, daß man’s bringe in die Kammer des Königs.
So the king took his signet ring from his finger and gave it to Haman son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the enemy of the Jews.
Da tat der König seinen Ring von der Hand und gab ihn Haman, dem Sohn Hammadathas, dem Agagiter, der Juden Feind.
“Keep the money,” the king said to Haman, “and do with the people as you please.”
Und der König sprach zu Haman: Das Silber sei dir gegeben, dazu das Volk, daß du damit tust, was dir gefällt.
Then on the thirteenth day of the first month the royal secretaries were summoned. They wrote out in the script of each province and in the language of each people all Haman’s orders to the king’s satraps, the governors of the various provinces and the nobles of the various peoples. These were written in the name of King Xerxes himself and sealed with his own ring.
Da rief man die Schreiber des Königs am 13. Tage des ersten Monats; und ward geschrieben, wie Haman befahl, an die Fürsten des Königs und zu den Landpflegern hin und her in den Ländern und zu den Hauptleuten eines jeglichen Volks in den Ländern hin und her, nach der Schrift eines jeglichen Volks und nach ihrer Sprache, im Namen des Königs Ahasveros und mit des Königs Ring versiegelt.
Dispatches were sent by couriers to all the king’s provinces with the order to destroy, kill and annihilate all the Jews — young and old, women and children — on a single day, the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, the month of Adar, and to plunder their goods.
Und die Briefe wurden gesandt durch die Läufer in alle Länder des Königs, zu vertilgen, zu erwürgen und umzubringen alle Juden, jung und alt, Kinder und Weiber, auf einen Tag, nämlich auf den 13. Tag des zwölften Monats, das ist der Monat Adar, und ihr Gut zu rauben.
A copy of the text of the edict was to be issued as law in every province and made known to the people of every nationality so they would be ready for that day.
Also war der Inhalt der Schrift: daß ein Gebot gegeben wäre in allen Ländern, allen Völkern zu eröffnen, daß sie auf denselben Tag bereit wären.
The couriers went out, spurred on by the king’s command, and the edict was issued in the citadel of Susa. The king and Haman sat down to drink, but the city of Susa was bewildered.
Und die Läufer gingen aus eilend nach des Königs Wort, und zu Schloß Susan ward das Gebot angeschlagen. Und der König und Haman saßen und tranken; aber die Stadt Susan ward bestürzt.
