  • Psalm 44a

    For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. A maskil.b

    We have heard it with our ears, O God;
    our ancestors have told us
    what you did in their days,
    in days long ago.
  • Come to Our Help

    To the choirmaster. A Maskila of the Sons of Korah.

    O God, we have heard with our ears,
    our fathers have told us,
    what deeds you performed in their days,
    in the days of old:
  • With your hand you drove out the nations
    and planted our ancestors;
    you crushed the peoples
    and made our ancestors flourish.
  • you with your own hand drove out the nations,
    but them you planted;
    you afflicted the peoples,
    but them you set free;
  • It was not by their sword that they won the land,
    nor did their arm bring them victory;
    it was your right hand, your arm,
    and the light of your face, for you loved them.
  • for not by their own sword did they win the land,
    nor did their own arm save them,
    but your right hand and your arm,
    and the light of your face,
    for you delighted in them.
  • You are my King and my God,
    who decreesc victories for Jacob.
  • You are my King, O God;
    ordain salvation for Jacob!
  • Through you we push back our enemies;
    through your name we trample our foes.
  • Through you we push down our foes;
    through your name we tread down those who rise up against us.
  • I put no trust in my bow,
    my sword does not bring me victory;
  • For not in my bow do I trust,
    nor can my sword save me.
  • but you give us victory over our enemies,
    you put our adversaries to shame.
  • But you have saved us from our foes
    and have put to shame those who hate us.
  • In God we make our boast all day long,
    and we will praise your name forever.d
  • In God we have boasted continually,
    and we will give thanks to your name forever. Selah
  • But now you have rejected and humbled us;
    you no longer go out with our armies.
  • But you have rejected us and disgraced us
    and have not gone out with our armies.
  • You made us retreat before the enemy,
    and our adversaries have plundered us.
  • You have made us turn back from the foe,
    and those who hate us have gotten spoil.
  • You gave us up to be devoured like sheep
    and have scattered us among the nations.
  • You have made us like sheep for slaughter
    and have scattered us among the nations.
  • You sold your people for a pittance,
    gaining nothing from their sale.
  • You have sold your people for a trifle,
    demanding no high price for them.
  • You have made us a reproach to our neighbors,
    the scorn and derision of those around us.
  • You have made us the taunt of our neighbors,
    the derision and scorn of those around us.
  • You have made us a byword among the nations;
    the peoples shake their heads at us.
  • You have made us a byword among the nations,
    a laughingstockb among the peoples.
  • I live in disgrace all day long,
    and my face is covered with shame
  • All day long my disgrace is before me,
    and shame has covered my face
  • at the taunts of those who reproach and revile me,
    because of the enemy, who is bent on revenge.
  • at the sound of the taunter and reviler,
    at the sight of the enemy and the avenger.
  • All this came upon us,
    though we had not forgotten you;
    we had not been false to your covenant.
  • All this has come upon us,
    though we have not forgotten you,
    and we have not been false to your covenant.
  • Our hearts had not turned back;
    our feet had not strayed from your path.
  • Our heart has not turned back,
    nor have our steps departed from your way;
  • But you crushed us and made us a haunt for jackals;
    you covered us over with deep darkness.
  • yet you have broken us in the place of jackals
    and covered us with the shadow of death.
  • If we had forgotten the name of our God
    or spread out our hands to a foreign god,
  • If we had forgotten the name of our God
    or spread out our hands to a foreign god,
  • would not God have discovered it,
    since he knows the secrets of the heart?
  • would not God discover this?
    For he knows the secrets of the heart.
  • Yet for your sake we face death all day long;
    we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.
  • Yet for your sake we are killed all the day long;
    we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.
  • Awake, Lord! Why do you sleep?
    Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever.
  • Awake! Why are you sleeping, O Lord?
    Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever!
  • Why do you hide your face
    and forget our misery and oppression?
  • Why do you hide your face?
    Why do you forget our affliction and oppression?
  • We are brought down to the dust;
    our bodies cling to the ground.
  • For our soul is bowed down to the dust;
    our belly clings to the ground.
  • Rise up and help us;
    rescue us because of your unfailing love.
  • Rise up; come to our help!
    Redeem us for the sake of your steadfast love!
