I have seen another evil under the sun, and it weighs heavily on mankind:
Noch ein großes Unglück habe ich auf dieser Welt gesehen, es trifft sehr viele Menschen:
God gives some people wealth, possessions and honor, so that they lack nothing their hearts desire, but God does not grant them the ability to enjoy them, and strangers enjoy them instead. This is meaningless, a grievous evil.
Da schenkt Gott einem Mann Reichtum, Wohlstand und Ehre — ja, alles, was er sich nur wünschen kann, nichts fehlt! Und trotzdem lässt er ihn nichts davon genießen, sondern es fällt einem Fremden in die Hände. Was für eine Sinnlosigkeit und welch ein Unglück!
A man may have a hundred children and live many years; yet no matter how long he lives, if he cannot enjoy his prosperity and does not receive proper burial, I say that a stillborn child is better off than he.
Mag ein Mann auch hundert Kinder haben und sehr lange leben — wenn er sein Glück nicht genießen kann und am Ende nicht einmal begraben wird, was hat er dann davon? Ich sage: Selbst einer Fehlgeburt geht es besser!

Als ein Nichts kommt sie, ins Dunkel geht sie, dorthin, wo sie für immer vergessen wird.

Das Licht der Sonne hat sie nie erblickt oder je etwas davon gewusst, und doch geht es ihr besser als jenem bedauernswerten Menschen! Denn er findet keine Ruhe und wird das Glück nie genießen, selbst wenn er zweitausend Jahre leben würde. Und am Ende müssen beide an den gleichen Ort!

Der Mensch müht sich ab sein Leben lang, nur um genug zum Essen zu haben, doch nie wird sein Verlangen gestillt.

Was also hat der Weise dem Unverständigen voraus? Was nützt dem Armen ein rechtschaffenes Leben?
Better what the eye sees

Sei zufrieden mit dem, was du hast, und verlange nicht ständig nach mehr, denn das ist vergebliche Mühe — so als wolltest du den Wind einfangen.

Alles auf der Welt ist seit langer Zeit vorherbestimmt, und auch das Schicksal jedes Menschen steht schon vor seiner Geburt fest. Mit dem, der mächtiger ist als er, kann er nicht darüber streiten.

Er kann ihn noch so sehr anklagen — es hat ja doch keinen Sinn und hilft ihm nicht weiter!
For who knows what is good for a person in life, during the few and meaningless days they pass through like a shadow? Who can tell them what will happen under the sun after they are gone?
Wer weiß denn, was für den Menschen gut ist in seinem kurzen und vergeblichen Leben, das schnell wie ein Schatten vorbeieilt? Wer kann ihm sagen, was nach seinem Tod auf dieser Welt geschehen wird?
