Daniel’s Dream of Four Beasts
In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon, Daniel had a dream, and visions passed through his mind as he was lying in bed. He wrote down the substance of his dream.

Im ersten Jahr Belschazzars, des Königs von Babel, hatte Daniel einen Traum; auf seinem Lager hatte er eine Vision. Daraufhin schrieb er den Traum auf. Der Beginn seiner Worte ist folgender.
Daniel said: “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me were the four winds of heaven churning up the great sea.
Daniel sagte: Ich schaute in meiner Vision während der Nacht und siehe: Die vier Winde des Himmels wühlten das große Meer auf.
Four great beasts, each different from the others, came up out of the sea.
Dann stiegen aus dem Meer vier große Tiere herauf; jedes hatte eine andere Gestalt.
“The first was like a lion, and it had the wings of an eagle. I watched until its wings were torn off and it was lifted from the ground so that it stood on two feet like a human being, and the mind of a human was given to it.
Das erste war einem Löwen ähnlich, hatte jedoch Adlerflügel. Während ich es betrachtete, wurden ihm die Flügel ausgerissen; es wurde vom Boden emporgehoben und wie ein Mensch auf zwei Füße gestellt und es wurde ihm ein menschliches Herz gegeben.
“And there before me was a second beast, which looked like a bear. It was raised up on one of its sides, and it had three ribs in its mouth between its teeth. It was told, ‘Get up and eat your fill of flesh!’
Dann erschien ein zweites Tier; es glich einem Bären und war nach einer Seite hin aufgerichtet. Es hielt drei Rippen zwischen den Zähnen in seinem Maul und man ermunterte es: Auf, friss noch viel mehr Fleisch!
“After that, I looked, and there before me was another beast, one that looked like a leopard. And on its back it had four wings like those of a bird. This beast had four heads, and it was given authority to rule.
Danach sah ich ein anderes Tier; es glich einem Panther, hatte aber auf dem Rücken vier Flügel, wie die Flügel eines Vogels; auch hatte das Tier vier Köpfe; ihm wurde die Macht eines Herrschers verliehen.
“After that, in my vision at night I looked, and there before me was a fourth beast — terrifying and frightening and very powerful. It had large iron teeth; it crushed and devoured its victims and trampled underfoot whatever was left. It was different from all the former beasts, and it had ten horns.
Danach sah ich in meinen nächtlichen Visionen ein viertes Tier; es war furchtbar und schrecklich anzusehen und sehr stark; es hatte große Zähne aus Eisen. Es fraß und zermalmte alles, und was übrig blieb, zertrat es mit den Füßen. Von den anderen Tieren war es völlig verschieden. Auch hatte es zehn Hörner.
“While I was thinking about the horns, there before me was another horn, a little one, which came up among them; and three of the first horns were uprooted before it. This horn had eyes like the eyes of a human being and a mouth that spoke boastfully.
Als ich die Hörner betrachtete, da wuchs zwischen ihnen ein anderes, kleineres Horn empor und vor ihm wurden drei von den früheren Hörnern ausgerissen; und an diesem Horn waren Augen wie Menschenaugen und ein Maul, das anmaßend redete.
“As I looked,
“thrones were set in place,
and the Ancient of Days took his seat.
His clothing was as white as snow;
the hair of his head was white like wool.
His throne was flaming with fire,
and its wheels were all ablaze.

Ich sah immer noch hin; da wurden Throne aufgestellt und ein Hochbetagter nahm Platz. Sein Gewand war weiß wie Schnee, sein Haar wie reine Wolle. Feuerflammen waren sein Thron und dessen Räder waren loderndes Feuer.
A river of fire was flowing,
coming out from before him.
Thousands upon thousands attended him;
ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him.
The court was seated,
and the books were opened.

Ein Strom von Feuer ging von ihm aus. Tausendmal Tausende dienten ihm, zehntausendmal Zehntausende standen vor ihm. Das Gericht nahm Platz und es wurden Bücher aufgeschlagen.
“Then I continued to watch because of the boastful words the horn was speaking. I kept looking until the beast was slain and its body destroyed and thrown into the blazing fire.
Ich sah immer noch hin, bis das Tier — wegen der anmaßenden Worte, die das Horn redete — getötet wurde. Sein Körper wurde dem Feuer übergeben und vernichtet.
(The other beasts had been stripped of their authority, but were allowed to live for a period of time.)
Auch den anderen Tieren wurde die Herrschaft genommen. Doch ließ man ihnen das Leben bis zu einer bestimmten Frist.
Immer noch hatte ich die nächtlichen Visionen: Da kam mit den Wolken des Himmels einer wie ein Menschensohn. Er gelangte bis zu dem Hochbetagten und wurde vor ihn geführt.
He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.
Ihm wurden Herrschaft, Würde und Königtum gegeben. Alle Völker, Nationen und Sprachen dienten ihm. Seine Herrschaft ist eine ewige, unvergängliche Herrschaft. Sein Reich geht niemals unter.
The Interpretation of the Dream
“I, Daniel, was troubled in spirit, and the visions that passed through my mind disturbed me.

I approached one of those standing there and asked him the meaning of all this.
“So he told me and gave me the interpretation of these things:

Ich wandte mich an einen der Umstehenden und bat ihn, mir das alles genau zu erklären. Er deutete mir die Vorgänge und sagte:
‘The four great beasts are four kings that will rise from the earth.
Diese großen Tiere, vier an der Zahl, bedeuten vier Könige, die sich auf der Erde erheben werden.
But the holy people of the Most High will receive the kingdom and will possess it forever — yes, for ever and ever.’
Das Königtum aber werden die Heiligen des Höchsten erhalten und sie werden es behalten für immer und ewig.
“Then I wanted to know the meaning of the fourth beast, which was different from all the others and most terrifying, with its iron teeth and bronze claws — the beast that crushed and devoured its victims and trampled underfoot whatever was left.
Dann wollte ich noch Genaueres über das vierte Tier erfahren, das Tier, das anders war als alle anderen, ganz furchtbar anzusehen, mit Zähnen aus Eisen und mit Klauen aus Bronze, das alles fraß und zermalmte und was übrig blieb mit den Füßen zertrat.
I also wanted to know about the ten horns on its head and about the other horn that came up, before which three of them fell — the horn that looked more imposing than the others and that had eyes and a mouth that spoke boastfully.
Auch über die zehn Hörner an seinem Kopf und über das andere Horn, das emporgewachsen war und vor dem die drei Hörner abgefallen waren, das Horn, das Augen und einen Mund hatte, der anmaßend redete, und das schließlich größer als die anderen zu sein schien.
As I watched, this horn was waging war against the holy people and defeating them,
Ich sah dieses Horn gegen die Heiligen kämpfen. Es überwältigte sie,
until the Ancient of Days came and pronounced judgment in favor of the holy people of the Most High, and the time came when they possessed the kingdom.
bis der Hochbetagte kam. Da wurde den Heiligen des Höchsten das Gericht übertragen und es kam die Zeit, in der die Heiligen das Königtum erhielten.
“He gave me this explanation: ‘The fourth beast is a fourth kingdom that will appear on earth. It will be different from all the other kingdoms and will devour the whole earth, trampling it down and crushing it.
Er antwortete mir: Das vierte Tier bedeutet: Ein viertes Reich wird sich auf der Erde erheben, ganz anders als alle vier anderen Reiche. Es wird die ganze Erde verschlingen, sie zertreten und zermalmen.
The ten horns are ten kings who will come from this kingdom. After them another king will arise, different from the earlier ones; he will subdue three kings.
Die zehn Hörner bedeuten: Aus jenem Reich werden sich zehn Könige erheben; doch nach ihnen erhebt sich ein anderer. Dieser ist ganz anders als die früheren. Er wird drei Könige stürzen,
er lästert über den Höchsten und unterdrückt die Heiligen des Höchsten. Die Festzeiten und das Gesetz will er ändern. Ihm werden die Heiligen für eine Zeit und zwei Zeiten und eine halbe Zeit ausgeliefert.
“ ‘But the court will sit, and his power will be taken away and completely destroyed forever.
Dann aber wird man zu Gericht sitzen. Jenem König wird seine Macht genommen, um endgültig ausgetilgt und vernichtet zu werden.
Then the sovereignty, power and greatness of all the kingdoms under heaven will be handed over to the holy people of the Most High. His kingdom will be an everlasting kingdom, and all rulers will worship and obey him.’
Die Herrschaft und Macht und die Herrlichkeit aller Reiche unter dem ganzen Himmel werden dem Volk der Heiligen des Höchsten gegeben. Sein Reich ist ein ewiges Reich und alle Mächte werden ihm dienen und gehorchen.
