“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices — mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law — justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

Aber die viel wichtigeren Forderungen Gottes nach Gerechtigkeit, Barmherzigkeit und Treue sind euch gleichgültig. Doch gerade darum geht es hier: das Wesentliche tun und das andere nicht unterlassen.

Weh euch, ihr Schriftgelehrten und Pharisäer, ihr Heuchler! Ihr gebt den Zehnten von Minze, Dill und Kümmel und lasst das Wichtigste im Gesetz außer Acht: Recht, Barmherzigkeit und Treue. Man muss das eine tun, ohne das andere zu lassen.
