Darby Bible Translation

  • Jesus Heals on the Sabbath

Another time Jesus went into the synagogue, and a man with a shriveled hand was there.
  • Jesus Heals on the Sabbath

And he entered again into the synagogue; and there was there a man having his hand dried up.
  • Some of them were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal him on the Sabbath.
  • And they watched him if he would heal him on the sabbath, that they might accuse him.
  • Jesus said to the man with the shriveled hand, “Stand up in front of everyone.”
  • And he says to the man who had his hand dried up, Rise up [and come] into the midst.
  • Then Jesus asked them, “Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?” But they remained silent.
  • And he says to them, Is it lawful on the sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill? But they were silent.
  • He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored.
  • And looking round upon them with anger, distressed at the hardening of their heart, he says to the man, Stretch out thy hand. And he stretched [it] out, and his hand was restored.
  • Then the Pharisees went out and began to plot with the Herodians how they might kill Jesus.
  • And the Pharisees going out straightway with the Herodians took counsel against him, how they might destroy him.
  • Crowds Follow Jesus

Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the lake, and a large crowd from Galilee followed.
  • Great Crowds Follow Jesus

And Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the sea; and a great multitude from Galilee followed him, and from Judaea,
  • When they heard about all he was doing, many people came to him from Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, and the regions across the Jordan and around Tyre and Sidon.
  • and from Jerusalem, and from Idumaea and beyond the Jordan; and they of around Tyre and Sidon, a great multitude, having heard what things he did, came to him.
  • Because of the crowd he told his disciples to have a small boat ready for him, to keep the people from crowding him.
  • And he spoke to his disciples, in order that a little ship should wait upon him on account of the crowd, that they might not press upon him.
  • For he had healed many, so that those with diseases were pushing forward to touch him.
  • For he healed many, so that they beset him that they might touch him, as many as had plagues.
  • Whenever the impure spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, “You are the Son of God.”
  • And the unclean spirits, when they beheld him, fell down before him, and cried saying, *Thou* art the Son of God.
  • But he gave them strict orders not to tell others about him.
  • And he rebuked them much, that they might not make him manifest.
  • Jesus Appoints the Twelve

Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him.
  • The Twelve Apostles

And he goes up into the mountain, and calls whom he himself would, and they went to him.
  • He appointed twelvea that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach
  • And he appointed twelve that they might be with him, and that he might send them to preach,
  • and to have authority to drive out demons.
  • and to have power [to heal diseases, and] to cast out demons.
  • These are the twelve he appointed: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter),
  • And he gave to Simon the surname of Peter;
  • James son of Zebedee and his brother John (to them he gave the name Boanerges, which means “sons of thunder”),
  • and James the [son] of Zebedee, and John the brother of James, and he gave them the surname of Boanerges, that is, Sons of thunder;
  • Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot
  • and Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the [son] of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Cananaean,
  • and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.
  • and Judas Iscariote, who also delivered him up. And they come to [the] house.
  • Jesus Accused by His Family and by Teachers of the Law

Then Jesus entered a house, and again a crowd gathered, so that he and his disciples were not even able to eat.
  • A House Divided

And again a crowd comes together, so that they cannot even eat bread.
  • When his familyb heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, “He is out of his mind.”
  • And his relatives having heard [of it] went out to lay hold on him, for they said, He is out of his mind.
  • And the teachers of the law who came down from Jerusalem said, “He is possessed by Beelzebul! By the prince of demons he is driving out demons.”
  • And the scribes who had come down from Jerusalem said, He has Beelzebub, and, By the prince of the demons he casts out demons.
  • So Jesus called them over to him and began to speak to them in parables: “How can Satan drive out Satan?
  • And having called them to [him], he said to them in parables, How can Satan cast out Satan?
  • If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.
  • And if a kingdom has become divided against itself, that kingdom cannot subsist.
  • If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand.
  • And if a house has become divided against itself, that house cannot subsist.
  • And if Satan opposes himself and is divided, he cannot stand; his end has come.
  • And if Satan rise up against himself, and is divided, he cannot subsist, but has an end.
  • In fact, no one can enter a strong man’s house without first tying him up. Then he can plunder the strong man’s house.
  • But no one can, having entered into his house, plunder the goods of the strong [man] unless he first bind the strong [man], and then he will plunder his house.
  • Truly I tell you, people can be forgiven all their sins and every slander they utter,
  • The Unpardonable Sin

    Verily I say unto you, that all sins shall be forgiven to the sons of men, and all the injurious speeches [with] which they may speak injuriously;
  • but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; they are guilty of an eternal sin.”
  • but whosoever shall speak injuriously against the Holy Spirit, to eternity has no forgiveness; but lies under the guilt of an everlasting sin;
  • He said this because they were saying, “He has an impure spirit.”
  • because they said, he has an unclean spirit.
  • Then Jesus’ mother and brothers arrived. Standing outside, they sent someone in to call him.
  • Jesus' Mother and Brothers

And his brethren and his mother come, and standing without sent to him calling him.
  • A crowd was sitting around him, and they told him, “Your mother and brothers are outside looking for you.”
  • And a crowd sat around him. And they said to him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren seek thee without.
  • “Who are my mother and my brothers?” he asked.
  • And he answered them, saying, Who is my mother or my brethren?
  • Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, “Here are my mother and my brothers!
  • And looking around in a circuit at those that were sitting around him, he says, Behold my mother and my brethren:
  • Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.”
  • for whosoever shall do the will of God, *he* is my brother, and sister, and mother.
