Favoritism Forbidden

My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism.

Браттє моє, не на лиця вважаючи, майте віру Господа нашого Ісуса Христа прославленого.

Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in filthy old clothes also comes in.

Коли бо ввійшов у громаду вашу чоловік з золотим перснем, в одежі осяйній, ввійшов же й вбогий в мізерній одежі,

If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, “Here’s a good seat for you,” but say to the poor man, “You stand there” or “Sit on the floor by my feet,”

і ви споглянете на того, що носить осяйну одежу, і скажете йому: Ти сїдай отут гарно, а вбогому скажете: Ти стань отам, або сїдай отут на підніжку моїм,

have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?

то чи не пересуджуєте між собою і не станетесь суддями з ледачими думками?

Listen, my dear brothers and sisters: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him?

Слухайте, браттє моє любе: хиба не вбогих сьвіту сього вибрав Бог на багатих вірою і наслїдників царства, котре обіцяв тим, хто любить Його?

But you have dishonored the poor. Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court?

Ви ж зневажили вбогого. Хиба не багаті підневолюють вас, і не вони тягнуть вас на судища?

Are they not the ones who are blaspheming the noble name of him to whom you belong?

Хиба не вони зневажають добре імя, яким вас названо?

If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, “Love your neighbor as yourself,”a you are doing right.

Коли ж оце звершуєте закон царський по писанню: "Люби ближнього свого, як себе самого", добре чините;

But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers.

коли ж на лиця дивитесь, то гріх робите, докорені законом, як переступники.

For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.

Кожний бо, хто увесь закон заховає, та згрішить в одному, станеть ся у всьому виноватий.

For he who said, “You shall not commit adultery,”b also said, “You shall not murder.”c If you do not commit adultery but do commit murder, you have become a lawbreaker.

Хто бо сказав: "Не чини перелюбу," Той сказав і: "Не вбивай." Коли ж не зробиш перелюбу, а вбєш, став ся єси переступником закону.

Speak and act as those who are going to be judged by the law that gives freedom,

Так говоріте і так творіте, яко такі, що законом свободним судити метесь.

because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

Суд бо без милосердя тому, хто не зробив милости, і вихваляєть ся милосердє суду (понад суд).

Faith and Deeds

What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them?

Яка користь, браттє моє, коли хто каже, що віру має, та дїл не має? чи може віра спасти його?

15

Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food.

15

Коли ж брат або сестра нагі будуть і жадні щоденної страви,

16

If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it?

а з вас хто скаже їм: Ідїть з миром, грійтесь і годуйтесь, а не дасть їм потрібного для тїла; яка (з того) користь?

17

In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

Так само й віра, коли дїл не має, мертва сама по собі.

18

But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds.”
Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds.

Ну, скаже хто: Ти віру маєш, а я дїла маю. Покажи менї віру твою з дїл твоїх, а я тобі докажу з дїл моїх віру мою.

19

You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that — and shudder.

19

Ти віруєш, що Бог один; добре робиш: і біси вірують, та й тремтять.

20

You foolish person, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is uselessd?

Чи хочеш же зрозуміти, чоловіче марний, що віра без дїл мертва?

21

Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar?

Авраам, отець наш, хиба не з дїл оправдив ся, піднявши Ісаака, сина свого, на жертівник?

22

You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did.

Чи бачиш, що віра допомагала дїлам його, і дїлами звершилась віра?

23

And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,”e and he was called God’s friend.

23

І сповнилось писаннє, що глаголе: "Увірував же Авраам Богові й полїчено йому (те) за праведність, і другом Божим наречено його."

You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone.

Чи бачите ж оце, що з дїл оправдуєть ся чоловік, а не з однієї віри?

In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction?

Так само і Раава блудниця хиба не з дїл оправдилась, прийнявши посланцїв і вивівши їх иншою дорогою?

As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.

26

Яко бо тїло без духа мертве, так і віра без дїл мертва.
