The Beast out of the Sea

The dragona stood on the shore of the sea. And I saw a beast coming out of the sea. It had ten horns and seven heads, with ten crowns on its horns, and on each head a blasphemous name.

The Beast from the Sea

Then [a]I stood on the sand of the sea. And I saw a beast rising up out of the sea, having [b]seven heads and ten horns, and on his horns ten crowns, and on his heads a blasphemous name.

The beast I saw resembled a leopard, but had feet like those of a bear and a mouth like that of a lion. The dragon gave the beast his power and his throne and great authority.

Now the beast which I saw was like a leopard, his feet were like the feet of a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of a lion. The dragon gave him his power, his throne, and great authority.

One of the heads of the beast seemed to have had a fatal wound, but the fatal wound had been healed. The whole world was filled with wonder and followed the beast.

And I saw one of his heads as if it had been mortally wounded, and his deadly wound was healed. And all the world marveled and followed the beast.

People worshiped the dragon because he had given authority to the beast, and they also worshiped the beast and asked, “Who is like the beast? Who can wage war against it?”

So they worshiped the dragon who gave authority to the beast; and they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like the beast? Who is able to make war with him?”

The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies and to exercise its authority for forty-two months.

And he was given a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies, and he was given authority to [c]continue for forty-two months.

It opened its mouth to blaspheme God, and to slander his name and his dwelling place and those who live in heaven.

Then he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme His name, His tabernacle, and those who dwell in heaven.

It was given power to wage war against God’s holy people and to conquer them. And it was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation.

It was granted to him to make war with the saints and to overcome them. And authority was given him over every [d]tribe, tongue, and nation.

All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast — all whose names have not been written in the Lamb’s book of life, the Lamb who was slain from the creation of the world.b

All who dwell on the earth will worship him, whose names have not been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

Whoever has ears, let them hear.

If anyone has an ear, let him hear.

“If anyone is to go into captivity,
into captivity they will go.
If anyone is to be killedc with the sword,
with the sword they will be killed.”d
This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness on the part of God’s people.

He who leads into captivity shall go into captivity; he who kills with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the [e]patience and the faith of the saints.

The Beast out of the Earth

Then I saw a second beast, coming out of the earth. It had two horns like a lamb, but it spoke like a dragon.

Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth, and he had two horns like a lamb and spoke like a dragon.

It exercised all the authority of the first beast on its behalf, and made the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose fatal wound had been healed.

And he exercises all the authority of the first beast in his presence, and causes the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.

And it performed great signs, even causing fire to come down from heaven to the earth in full view of the people.

He performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men.

Because of the signs it was given power to perform on behalf of the first beast, it deceived the inhabitants of the earth. It ordered them to set up an image in honor of the beast who was wounded by the sword and yet lived.

And he deceives [f]those who dwell on the earth by those signs which he was granted to do in the sight of the beast, telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who was wounded by the sword and lived.

The second beast was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that the image could speak and cause all who refused to worship the image to be killed.

He was granted power to give breath to the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak and cause as many as would not worship the image of the beast to be killed.

It also forced all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads,

He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads,

so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of its name.

and that no one may buy or sell except one who has [g]the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

This calls for wisdom. Let the person who has insight calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man.e That number is 666.

Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666.
