The man’s name was Elimelek, his wife’s name was Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Kilion. They were Ephrathites from Bethlehem, Judah. And they went to Moab and lived there.
Der Mann hieß Elimelech, seine Frau Noomi und seine Söhne hießen Machlon und Kiljon; sie waren Efratiter aus Betlehem in Juda. Als sie im Grünland Moabs ankamen, blieben sie dort.
Now Elimelek, Naomi’s husband, died, and she was left with her two sons.

They married Moabite women, one named Orpah and the other Ruth. After they had lived there about ten years,

Naomi and Ruth Return to Bethlehem
When Naomi heard in Moab that the Lord had come to the aid of his people by providing food for them, she and her daughters-in-law prepared to return home from there.

Da brach sie mit ihren Schwiegertöchtern auf, um aus dem Grünland Moabs heimzukehren; denn sie hatte dort gehört, der HERR habe sich seines Volkes angenommen und ihm Brot gegeben.
With her two daughters-in-law she left the place where she had been living and set out on the road that would take them back to the land of Judah.

Then Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go back, each of you, to your mother’s home. May the Lord show you kindness, as you have shown kindness to your dead husbands and to me.

and said to her, “We will go back with you to your people.”
und sagten zu ihr: Nein, wir wollen mit dir zu deinem Volk gehen.
But Naomi said, “Return home, my daughters. Why would you come with me? Am I going to have any more sons, who could become your husbands?
Noomi sagte: Kehrt doch um, meine Töchter! Warum wollt ihr mit mir ziehen? Habe ich etwa in meinem Leib noch Söhne, die eure Männer werden könnten?
Return home, my daughters; I am too old to have another husband. Even if I thought there was still hope for me — even if I had a husband tonight and then gave birth to sons —
Kehrt um, meine Töchter, und geht; denn ich bin zu alt, noch einem Mann zu gehören. Selbst wenn ich dächte, ich habe noch Hoffnung, ja, wenn ich noch diese Nacht einem Mann gehörte und gar Söhne bekäme:
would you wait until they grew up? Would you remain unmarried for them? No, my daughters. It is more bitter for me than for you, because the Lord’s hand has turned against me!”
Wolltet ihr warten, bis sie erwachsen sind? Wolltet ihr euch so lange abschließen und ohne einen Mann leben? Nein, meine Töchter! Mir täte es bitter leid um euch; denn mich hat die Hand des HERRN getroffen.
At this they wept aloud again. Then Orpah kissed her mother-in-law goodbye, but Ruth clung to her.
Da weinten sie noch lauter. Doch dann gab Orpa ihrer Schwiegermutter den Abschiedskuss, während Rut nicht von ihr ließ.
“Look,” said Naomi, “your sister-in-law is going back to her people and her gods. Go back with her.”
Noomi sagte: Du siehst, deine Schwägerin kehrt heim zu ihrem Volk und zu ihrem Gott. Folge ihr doch!
But Ruth replied, “Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.
Rut antwortete: Dränge mich nicht, dich zu verlassen und umzukehren! Wohin du gehst, dahin gehe auch ich, und wo du bleibst, da bleibe auch ich. Dein Volk ist mein Volk und dein Gott ist mein Gott.
Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely, if even death separates you and me.”
Wo du stirbst, da sterbe auch ich, da will ich begraben sein. Der HERR soll mir dies und das antun — nur der Tod wird mich von dir scheiden.
When Naomi realized that Ruth was determined to go with her, she stopped urging her.
Als sie sah, dass Rut darauf bestand, mit ihr zu gehen, redete sie nicht länger auf sie ein.
So the two women went on until they came to Bethlehem. When they arrived in Bethlehem, the whole town was stirred because of them, and the women exclaimed, “Can this be Naomi?”
So zogen sie miteinander bis Betlehem. Als sie in Betlehem ankamen, geriet die ganze Stadt ihretwegen in Bewegung. Die Frauen sagten: Ist das nicht Noomi?
Doch sie erwiderte: Nennt mich nicht mehr Noomi, Liebliche, sondern Mara, Bittere; denn viel Bitteres hat der Allmächtige mir getan.
Reich bin ich ausgezogen, aber mit leeren Händen hat der HERR mich heimkehren lassen. Warum nennt ihr mich noch Noomi, da doch der HERR gegen mich gesprochen und der Allmächtige mir Schlimmes angetan hat?
