Abraham and Abimelech

And Abraham journeyed from there to the South, and dwelt between Kadesh and Shur, and stayed in Gerar.

Авраам вирушив звідти в землю на південь і поселився між Кадисом і Суром, — він замешкав у Ґерарах.

Now Abraham said of Sarah his wife, “She is my sister.” And Abimelech king of Gerar sent and took Sarah.

І сказав Авраам про свою дружину Сарру: Вона моя сестра, оскільки побоявся сказати «вона моя дружина», щоби часом через неї його не вбили чоловіки міста. І послав Авімелех, цар Ґерар, і взяв Сарру.

But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, “Indeed you are a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken, for she is [a]a man’s wife.”

І прийшов Бог до Авімелеха вночі уві сні, і сказав: Ось ти вмираєш через жінку, яку ти взяв, бо вона живе із чоловіком.

But Abimelech had not come near her; and he said, “Lord, will You slay a righteous nation also?

Авімелех не був із нею, тож він сказав: Господи, чи знищиш праведний народ, який через незнання грішить?

5

Did he not say to me, ‘She is my sister’? And she, even she herself said, ‘He is my brother.’ In the [b]integrity of my heart and innocence of my hands I have done this.”

Хіба ж не він мені сказав: Вона є моєю сестрою? І вона мені сказала: Він є моїм братом. Із чистим серцем і з праведністю рук я зробив це.

And God said to him in a dream, “Yes, I know that you did this in the integrity of your heart. For I also withheld you from sinning against Me; therefore I did not let you touch her.

А Бог сказав йому уві сні: Тож Я, знаючи, що із чистим серцем зробив ти це, пощадив тебе, щоб не згрішив ти проти Мене. Тому й не допустив Я, щоб ти був з нею.

7

Now therefore, restore the man’s wife; for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you and you shall live. But if you do not restore her, know that you shall surely die, you and all who are yours.”

Тепер же поверни жінку чоловікові, бо він пророк; тож помолиться він за тебе, — і житимеш. Якщо ж не повернеш, — знай, що помреш ти і всі твої.

So Abimelech rose early in the morning, called all his servants, and told all these things in their hearing; and the men were very much afraid.

Авімелех устав вранці, закликав усіх своїх слуг і переказав усі ці слова в їхні вуха; тож усі люди дуже налякалися.

9

And Abimelech called Abraham and said to him, “What have you done to us? How have I [c]offended you, that you have brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? You have done deeds to me that ought not to be done.”

Тож Авімелех покликав Авраама і сказав йому: Навіщо це ти нам зробив? Хіба згрішили ми чимось перед тобою, що ти навів на мене і на моє царство тяжкий гріх? Те, чого ніхто не робить, — ти зробив мені.

Then Abimelech said to Abraham, “What did you have in view, that you have done this thing?”

Промовив Авімелех Авраамові: Що ти задумав, коли робив це?

And Abraham said, “Because I thought, surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will kill me on account of my wife.

Авраам же промовив: Бо сказав я: Ось, на цьому місці немає пошани до Бога, тож мене вб’ють через мою дружину.

12

But indeed she is truly my sister. She is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife.

Але вона й справді моя сестра — по батькові, але не по матері, і стала моєю дружиною.

13

And it came to pass, when God caused me to wander from my father’s house, that I said to her, ‘This is your kindness that you should do for me: in every place, wherever we go, say of me, “He is my brother.” ’ ”

І сталося, коли вивів мене Бог з дому мого батька, то я сказав їй: Скрізь, куди лише підемо, кажи про мене, що це твій брат, — зроби мені таку ласку.

14

Then Abimelech took sheep, oxen, and male and female servants, and gave them to Abraham; and he restored Sarah his wife to him.

Тож Авімелех узяв тисячу дідрахм, овець і телят, рабів і рабинь, і дав Авраамові, і повернув йому Сарру, його дружину.

15

And Abimelech said, “See, my land is before you; dwell where it pleases you.”

І сказав Авімелех Авраамові: Ось, перед тобою моя земля; де лише буде тобі до вподоби, — там і перебувай.

16

Then to Sarah he said, “Behold, I have given your brother a thousand pieces of silver; indeed this [d]vindicates you before all who are with you and before everybody.” Thus she was [e]rebuked.

А Саррі сказав: Ось, дав я тисячу дідрахм твоєму братові, — це буде тобі на вшанування твоєї особи і всім, які з тобою; і завжди говори правду.

17

So Abraham prayed to God; and God healed Abimelech, his wife, and his female servants. Then they bore children;

Помолився Авраам до Бога, і зцілив Бог Авімелеха, його дружину та його рабинь — і вони почали народжувати.

18

for the Lord had closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech because of Sarah, Abraham’s wife.
